Well that was both annoying and a bit scary.

So I plugged in my iomega storage device to my laptop, to pull some music I had saved on it off... And it comes up with a message saying "You must format this disc before you can use it".  In my experience, "Format" is synonomous with "Delete everything on it". Saying 'Cancel' just makes the F: drive come up as empty. I unplug and replug it several times, and the message keeps coming up *insert panic emote here*

Finally, after doing so multiple times, and pulling the USB cord out of the iomega and putting it back THEN trying,  it finally pulls up the drive as it should. Thankfully ><

Still using GCC X compiler for motorola HC11s and 12s where its needed, is useful to combine symbolic assembler and C sometimes especially writing driivers for sensors :)

    Excel pain.

nothing wrong with a goto statement.  had a teacher way back when wouldn't let us use goto statements.

Goto statements are like loaded guns.  Safe in the hands of the sane, sober, and trained. yes

Assembly Language on the other hand, is a box full of hand grenades  and wire clothes hangers. devil

Edited to add:  Oh, you're talking about "goto" within Excel programming?  I didn't even know that was possible. surprise My experience with Excel is functional but very limited.

Yes, in Assembly Language, if you goto the wrong location, your program needs a flatbed............crash!

I'm surprised that Excel has a goto.  I thought they'd have abolished it by now.  Well, be very, very, careful with it and maybe it's OK.  Like you said, well trained or leave it alone.  Spaghetti code.

A meme I made to express my feelings.

I actually cancelled my reservation and removed the icon. After issues in the past with auto updates, I've had it turned off.  I like to make sure first that there are no bugs (like happened a couple of times recently) and that I actually need them.  Win10 Home wil not have this feature. Also I read on a tech site that since Win8, if an update fails to install, Windows will roll your system to a point in time before it was issued. Basically it will do an "auto restore" possibly wiping out any changes you may have made to files.

    Double plus ungood.

I have Windows update tell me that updates are ready, but don't let it do the updates until I tell it to.  I can do what I need to do beforehand.  Like today, there was an update to SQL Server 2008, and I had SSMS 2008 open, so I finished up and closed it, then let the update rip!

As for the issue you brought up...I would create a restore point right then, and then run the update.  That way, if it did roll back, it would only go to just before it was run.

I intend to wait a while before trying the upgrade.  Windows 7 Pro is pretty good to me.  I want to be sure that the dust settles and the bugs are worked out before I give it a shot.  I will probably have to pick up a copy

I have Windows update set to notify me but I decide when to run the updates.  That way, I can do what I need to before it runs.  For example, today there was an update for SQL Server 2008.  I had SSMS 2008 running.  So I finished up what I was doing, then closed it.  Then I ran the update.

I intend to wait a while to see that the dust has settled and the bugs are worked out before upgrading.  We have about a year.  I like Windows 7 Pro, so I don't want to rush to the new shiny.  If it looks like things are good and I hear good things about it, I'll give it a try.  I guess I'll have to buy a copy of StartMenuX at that time.  From what I've seen so far, the start menu in Windows 10 is not all that great.  I bet they'll be getting a lot of business again when people start installing Windows 10.  it's a great start menu, a great product, and costs so little.

I took a course of assemby language but I still do not understand it.

Writing in a script language is like writing a short story.

Writing in FORTRAN is like writing a magazine article.

Writing in C is like writing a book starting in the middle and alternating backward and forward until you reach the beginning and end at the same time.

Writing in Assembler is like writing a set of encyclopedias from Post-It Notes in a tornado.

And let's not forget the languages  like "vi", "sed", "yacc" and "lex" where one writes using alphabet noodles and chicken scratchings to form encrypted and unpronouncable (i.e. unspeakable) magical spells.

YACC isn't actually a language, is it?  I was pretty sure it stands for Yet Another Compiler Compiler (no, I'm not stuttering).

Damnit!  I was making that post about Windows update and hit a wrong key and all the text was going right-justified.  I couldn't change it.  Nothing was highlighted in the formatting thing.  So I just hit the back button and then tried again.  But this forum put the old post with the new post.  It all looks proper, but it's doubled and some things I said differently the second time.  I did not ask it to add the old draft!  Thank you forum!  angry

...Dana, very true, that should be enough time to work most of the bugs out (I hope).

...and WIn 7 will still get security support updates for another five years so no huge rush,

I only originally considered  it as a 0$ way to boost the physical memory ceiling above 16 GB so I could perform my memory upgrade without having to shell out an extra 140$ for a Win7 Pro OEM. The 24 GB 1333MHz tri channel kit I need is down to just over 200$ now.

Having no control over what and when updates get installed on my system  (as it only just be security patches) though is not worth it, especially if WIn10 will not support devices like my trackball (an older model) or some older utilities I still use.

I had an Iomega Zip Drive years ago.  Well, it's still around somewhere.  And I have discs with stuff on them, and a bunch of blank discs.  But, alas, it was a SCSI drive and I no longer have a SCSI card in the computer.  Oh, well.  The discs were only 100MB anyway.  That seems so small now.  I have a tiny USB thumb drive, and it holds 16Gigs!

I don't let my Compy anywhere near my laptop or other techy stuff for fear he'll eat it cheeky

In all seriousness though,  no it didn't. Was nice and silent and whatnot, so I don't think the iomega was the problem.... At least I hope not D:

I've got thumbdrives and flashthings all over the place. The iomega one is my largest.

Just recently I got an SD Card for my Nintendo 3DS, since I had planned on downloading games off the eShop onto it instead of waiting around to get them phsyically. Ended up getting a 128GB card which is a bit overkill, now that I think about it in hindsight, but oh well!  Currently only have one game on it (Monster Hunter 4G), but I've got a few games wishlisted and there's two more coming out late 2015 and sometime in 2016 that I've got my eyes on ;)

I'm thinking that once those games come out in America I'll stick them onto the same SD card, assuming the 3DS's won't freak out over foreign stuff being on it (I'm assuming the "incompatible" ones will just not show up in the menu, but since I've never actually used the USA eShop yet, I wouldn't know)

Remember "high density" 3.5" discs?  1.44 MB.  These days, the average shareware game zip file is larger than that!  laugh

...yeah, I still have a bunch of those in a box somewhere.

Could have used one for an image I created of one of my Champions RPG superhero characters in old Pixel Paint on a Colour Mac II, I ended up having to split the image into two halves to save each to an 800 KB floppy as the final file was 1.2 MB and the Mac II only had an 800KB drive.

The colour Mac II's in the lab had a "whopping" 20MB of memory and 40MB HDD.

Have you considered that if you'd have to start over, that the company could just as well hire someone else to do a fresh start too, surprise perhaps with a more modern or more professional approach to the problem?  I've always thought that that "job security" excuse was just a cocky or lame rationalization for lack of time, initiative or documentation skills.
