As I am no expert with Daz Studio I have asked Catherine aka Patience55 to take over from here, so please give her time.

In the mean time I will go back and have another look at this project and mess things up on purpose - (make it so DS gives a material error message) and find solutions. If you have any problems with this tutorial post your concerns below or drop me a PM and I'll try to help.

Over at ShareCG you find some textures and UVmapping aids I put together when making this prop, feel free to use them in your own projects.

Well done, John - clear and concise tut, good work-flow and great result :)

Looking forward to patience's part - hopefully making it a smart prop?

Wow! Somebody's been busy! That's one of the best tutorials I've seen done recently.

time ... yeah ... little bit of time .... me learning too lol ... idea is for smart props, packaging and whatever else happens along the way ;-)

Good news ... making parented props is very easy :-)

Have a few images to edit ... hopefully will be uploaded tomorrow.

So go ahead and make swords! However you plan to export/import ... just be sure that the sword is exactly the correct size for the intended figure. For ease of posing, keep it to the "0" landing field. From said .obj file import, one can make a D/S prop, a placed-in-hand prop and a parented prop.

Do not be concerned about .obj files importing "white" or "grey" ... in D/S use the Surface Tab to texture and/or colour as desired. For making a prop, do NOT use shaders. Esp. for planned shares. More info tomorrow.

    and the next one ...

Somewhere in here I mention not to use shaders on an .obj being created to be a file for redistribution. This is because some shaders place information in strange places on our computers and simply will not work on somebody else's computer. One can certainly create shaders for redistribution with their products if so desired ... or shader presets if I have the correct term to load them onto an already created file.

Thank you Patience, I'm so glad you got it to work - I'll give it a go myself this weekend.

Here is a link to the sword I made if you want to jump straight to the good part -

No problem, if it helps the HXN and OBJ files are in the the "sword file" I uploaded to ShareCG (link on previous page).
