Who are the most realistic Genesis 8 characters in 2020?

I lot of characters have come out since Genesis 8 was introduced.  I'm looking to find the most realistic looking characters and I'm wondering what are your personal picks for the most photo realistic Genesis 8 characters to date now?

Thank in Advance

  • Since this has caused confusion in the past, are you looking for actual realism in the way the figure and skin respond to the lighting or hyper-realism with lots of painted-in detail that will show regardless of the lighting?

bluejaunte for true photorealism. Dasan 8, Dain 8, Babina 8, Kala 8, Sahira 8, Bridget 8, Tasha 8 for Core Figures. Zelara 8 and Nix 8 for looks good enough that you forget about photorealism.

What do you mean by realistic?

To stand a chance of answering this question, we need a frame of reference.

The OP presumes we all agree on what is realistic.

Provide some examples of realistic 3D characters (Blender, 3DS Max, earlier versions of Genesis and pre genesis figures to offer some suggestions)

When you provide the examples, try and highlight the aspects that particularly sell the realism to you.

Don't go by what other people think.  Conformity is the jailer of freedom, and the enemy of growth.

I would recommend checking the lassies and lads created by Mousso. They are my most favourite characters.

^ This is worth repeating. Add in the look from other media (eg slick magazine realism, documentary realism, photorealism, etc), the desire to capture the lumpy asymmetry of the real world, and/or whatever else might factor in.

That thread doesnt exactly tell you what figure to buy... in fact you'll just be more confused after reading it since everyone is using bespoke textures/maps and not referincing what base items they are using.

I disagree. It shows a number of characters, but nothing that can't be got from browsing the store; there is also almost zero discussion. A sadly mis-named thread.

I use Mabel and Vladimir a lot. Always subjective, hope that helps.

I propose the working definition of "realistic" should be "able to convince people it's a real person when they see it". So the most realistic characters are the ones closest to that goal. Even if none of them are completely there. And if one must argue that different characters are the most convincing under different settings, I would propose that the default IRAY settings be used to measure the degree of realism.

Thank you. That is so commonsensical that it will probably be considered illegal or offensive.

Painted-in detail is a negative for me. I have bought a lot of older (as in apparent age of the character) figures but, though I like the diversity in including the non-glamourous, I would rather the skin creases were HD or normal maps rather than painted shadows.

I second the vote for @bluejaunte ... I often use the skins on different G8F figures but the sculpted details are excellent on the originals.

Since the females are invariable madeup in makeup and floodlight lit in the advertising that's a hard one to judge for me. Of the ones I've bought though, I actually like Marilla HD the best. For the guys it's a real easy choice and that would be Dain 8. Most of the bad things you hear about Dain 8  are because of quality problems with components in a couple of products in the Dain 8 Starter & Pro Bundles not becauise of Dain 8 himself.

Agreed. I'm a HUGE Mousso fan! Some people complain about some characters being too pretty, so if that's your issue, it's very easy to make them less attractive by adding small tweaks to the nose, chin, eyes,  etc... It's much harder to make an unattractive character pretty so I think it's best to start with a beautiful character that you can always ugly down. And, in my opinion, @Mousso has the most attractive and most realistic characters.

Realistic characters is a difficult term for me here. Are we talking about the whole character here, or just about faces. I have seen here a lot of awesome realistic faces, but rarley any bodies, that look realistic to me.
Most character morphs have un-naturaly small waist shapes and super long legs. I'd describe most characters' bodies as semi-toony. Looking like those super heroine dolls, that you can buy in comic book stores.
As I said, I see a lot of faces in the store, that look stunning realistic, with some great skin shaders, but one of the best body shapes is still - though very skinny, with already long legs - the base default Genesis 8Female.

We still have no idea what the OP considers 'realistic'; I refer to my previous post

despite the eyes being what I feel is too large, this for me feels very realistic; the main promo shot for the product linked: https://www.daz3d.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/960x1248/17f82f742ffe127f42dca9de82fb58b1/g/o/gou-luk-bundle-00-main-daz3d.jpg

I would also say that this looks very realistic despite being SciFi and obviously not real.

My previous post was an attempt to avoid the "what is realism" debate. The OP is free to ask which people think is most realistic by his criteria, but he does need to give those criteria.

    What's a comic book store?

    Yeah there's

    1. Does this convince me that this is an actual person I might meet IRL or see a photograph of?

    2. If this fantasy person/creature did exist, is this what this individual would look like if they were photographed?

It's not a discussion about what is real or not, but on what we think is the most real; agreeing or disagreeing is largely irrelevant.

I think Inaru is really impressive.

    https://www.daz3d.com/inaru-hd--smile-hd-expression-for-genesis-8-female

The character seemed surprisingly good on screen and when I printed it alongside pictures of real people on paper, it blended right in. I bet if I showed somebody the printout, nobody would stop at her and say something's strange about that one.

I see similar potential in Jessi without Josephine, but others have said something is weird about her eyes.

    ... and her waist.
about her eyes: I think some better eye-materials could easily fix that.

Name one realistic face.  To me, they are all super symmetrical and idealised, almost most without exception.

I think the bodies of the characters are much more realistic than the faces. It's quite easy to pose in bad posture, bad physique without it looking unrealistic.

I like a number of Blue Jaunte's characters for their authenticity.

We don't need to agree on this.
And just because this product has been already mentioned:
    https://www.daz3d.com/inaru-hd--smile-hd-expression-for-genesis-8-female ...
... has a realistc face and not symetrical.

The original question was "who are the most realistic". It didn't ask who is perfect. And we'll never get to a completely realistic character if we keep rejecting the characters closest to it. Anyway, I think Nyarai has a lot to work with.
