It took me a long while to figure out that it's an old Samurai style hairdo. Not something that most users are going to have a great need for, but at least it does have that one application.
I just opened up the three images you linked in past post and... they aren't the same at all. None of the wrinkles are in the same place, neither are a few freckles.
Yeah, I can't see anything that would suggest they use the "same old skin resource". Seems pretty disrespectful towards the art team to try and diminish their work like that.
I really wish there was a way to save and load the contets of a cart. (I know there is a save to excel function on the add-on but to my knowledge tehere is no load from excel function as well).
I currently have 18 items in my cart for the PC + items offer but I'm not ready to pull the trigger on that but I would love to play around with the Dassan offer.
Unfortunately I can't do that without emptying the cart first and I wouldn't want to empty the cart and have to reload later all the 18 items.
I would see the benefit if the price for the new pro pack were right.
I also own only 2 pro packs. I bought Vic and Michael 8 at arround $22 each last month. Not with an MM offer, wth a flash sale that provided additional discount (up to 4 items at 50%, the other two i choose were PC subscription and an additional not DO character i liked) so i even avoided buying not required/wanted stuff. Was it a nice deal? I think so, but i'm still not convinced it was the best investment i could have done. Pro packs have a lot of not so good items, and most outfits requires buying additional textures to be actually good/useful.
After that i could not found a proper pricing for pro packs. I think Josephine promos added to a flash sale provided good deals if you had also bought unwanted items a week before(gamble, plain and simple). Required gamble and also qualify to other stuff.
Now the price for this pro pack is just too much for what it offers. Is a decent character? Yes, i think so. But not for $46 + 3 addons (so actually $58+ for a pack that does not even include one decent hair option; and while i love sci-fi the retro stuff is not what i look for). The divided discounts is not that good for me even if i'm new here as some categories i have no use for (i have no use for animals/creatures and the resource/addons don't have what i want/need more). Most of the good stuff is in a single category.
So buying expensive pro packs now with stuff i don't like so at some potential future i might get decent prices on pro packs and other stuff i actually see more value overall...i don't think is a smart way to spend my money. We are not even given what the specific qualifications are (like is owning an specific number or is it buying at least X amount in the last Y time?). Will conditions be steady? How many bad deals should we make to hoping for good ones?
I pulled the trigger on Dasan, mainly to get three bits of environment I'm going to want for later. The Q suit works, and the hair, and with the additional texture pack, I might be able to save the rest of the outfits. More likely, I'll wind up abusing the shaders to make something a bit less garish. The characters themselves don't particularly interest me, although I *may* make a character based on Dain himself. Going to see if I can get Adama out of him somehow. We shall see.
All hail the Burger Restaraunt!
Is it me, or does Riggs look like he was beaten aboutr the head and shoulders with the Fugly stick?
The quickest way I've found to do it is just to select the whole cart and copy it to a word page, then clear the cart, after which it's just a matter of clicking on the hyperlinked product images on the word doc and loading the individual items from there. If you use tabs in your browser, you can also speed up the process even more by popping each item in a new tab all at once so they're all queing simultaneously.... they're all going to end up in the same cart, after all. An extra trick to use when you're doing the same thing at Rendo is that while removing individual items from their cart takes forever with their system, moving the same item to your wishlist is practically instant..
Just a note.
The Purple Banner thing does cut both ways. As an example, if say you are offered a couple of pro bundles or base characters with an offer, for those of us that already have them, we may see an 'extra 10% off' or similar coupon instead if Daz CS is being generous. Which sounds cool until you do the math... $134.95 Pro Bundle versus maybe $10-20 in savings. Of course, if you don't want the Pro Bundle in question... There are similar examples, but you get the idea here.
And if someone already has most of the 'bonus items' in some sale, well that sale becomes a lot less interesting to them, as the 'newbies' are getting a better deal than the 'old timers' in that case. I'm sure you've seen 'I have most/all of the bonus items, and the ones that are left don't interest me' posts a few times...
So for those of you lamenting that you aren't getting purple banner offers, versus others that have a lot of content, be patient. Your day will come too!
We were getting much better 'bonus deals' with Pro Bundles for the 12-18 months after Genesis 8 first launched, though, which is why some of us have a LOT of Genesis 8 and older bundles at this point. The Daz sales team has cut back on said offers a LOT of late. The $75 in DO's is kinda cool, but even that is becoming more rare.
Still not sure what triggered that 'free' $10 gift card last month, but whatever it was, I didn't meet the requirement, despite being a regular shopper. Go figure.
I'm still annoyed that we don't get 'partial credit' for owning part/most of a bundle though. There are a number of Pro Bundles that I haven't bought/acquired as of yet because I own most of the bundle, but am afraid to buy the remaining items I want in said pro bundles just in case the bundles get offered as freebies in some future sale...
So you can't win for losing with the Daz store sometimes, so you can either stress about it, or just adopt a c'est la vie attitude about the whole thing.
The #1 piece of advice I can give to newer shoppers is to be patient. If the current deal isn't striking your fancy, be patient, there will be other sales. And you might as well give up on trying to predict what a future sale might look like, but the bright side is that odds are good that there will be some killer deal eventually on most stuff.
It is also recommended to check the Daz Deals plugin sales graph to see how often an item goes on sale though. While it often doesn't tell the full story, such as when you might get extra discounts from coupons or something, at least you can get a general feel for how often an item might go on sale.
And if a bunch of people show up in threads such as this one commenting on how good a deal is on something, it might be worth paying more attention to. Especially if it's 'grizzled Daz sales veterans' mentioning it...
Does anyone know what bundle or product that the gold steampunk (ish) pistol comes with that is pictured on the Dasan home page? Thanks!

Obviously I agree, haha :) But very well written post!
I LOVE this feature and the daily emails from @Ati about wishlist items on sale is super useful too! :D
ANYWAY, I'm excited to start seeing people's Dasan renders! The ones posted so far are really great. FYI there is a request in The "Dial Them Out" Thread for an image of Mr Riggs with Dasan dialled out, so flagging up in case anyone here who's bought the bundle could help out :)
I wish they didn't divide the freebies into categories. There aren't enough iRay shaders left to choose from and I don't use 3Delight or Carrera. I have no interest in Dasan or the bundle (except the retro sci-fi suit) but trying to see if freebies are worth it. But I should probably wait for a bundle I actually do want that will also offer freebies but probably less because of current discounts...
It's business decisions. Fresh new face or buy the same guy again.
I'm sorry, but which store are you looking at? Because I must respectfully disagree. :P
A lot of the characters are matching pairs. Leroy and Nida, Jonathan and Josephene, Kanade and Yuzuru, Deigo and Gabriela, Elios and Ellithia, Sanjay and Kala, Mr Woo and Mrs Chow, Ollie and Edie, Floyd and Mabel, Monique and Darius, Victoria and Michael, etc...it's not like they're only making young girls and old men.
Also, you've got characters like Deigo, Silas, Yuzuru, Sanjay, Nix, Lee, The Brute, Landon, a pretty diverse cast of male characters who aren't old.
If you don't mind me asking, what exactly would you consider an "interesting" male character?
Apparently there is a lack of Teen males. I saw more than one person complain about this.
In my mind there's nothing special about a teen and there are already a few teen males that are great, without the need for a DO character for it, but that is just my preference. I have 0 interest in a teen male.
Use the refund system. If you pick up a pro bundle that you already have chunks of, they have in the past issued at least partial credits for the bits you already own. I did this for the Growing Up morphs a couple of years ago, and they refunded part or all of the critter I had in favor of the entire bundle.
They're looking at the DAZ store, and I completely agree with them!
There is a wide variety of female characters for G8, but for the guys the releases are either old guys, comically ripped guys, or just plain boring guys. There are NO teen or young base G8M characters. There are characters like Emrys' Teen Jamie which is a good quality character, but the point is that there are no base characters that fulfill the younger male genre.
I don't think it's unfair to point this out. After all, it is a glaring fact. G3M had Teen Ryan, why cant G8M have a dedicated base figure too?
(edit:) In fairness, I do think some of the G8M base figures are awesome - however that doesn't address the glaring gap in the G8M age range!
Speak for yourself. That particular hair was the difference between "get" and "frak it."
@DarkSpartan Can I ask you, as someone who has bought that particular hair, does it render any better than the promo pics? It does look very 'anime' in those, and whilst it's an interesting style, its those pics that are putting me off to be honest!
I haven't tucked into it yet, but as soon as the render I'm working on is done (testing the Space Living Room), I will happily prep a render and post it here. Watch this space here in a couple of hours :)
Thanks, I'd appreciate that. But as it's bed time here in the UK, it will be morning before I get a chance to take a look - but I will! :D
Several of the last few male characters look like they tried to make them as ugly as possible.
I've seen worse, but not often. There's a Danny over at The Other Site that looks worse.
Ok, well that's understandable. Being disappointed in the lack of a certain type of character is perfectly valid. That said, I still disagree with them suggesting that Daz only make either "pretty white ladies" or "old, uninteresting" men, and I feel that maybe there's more productive ways to try and convince Daz to make a teen male character.
I like him. He's got a real 'evil boss/mob boss' kinda grim look to him.
I'm guessing Dasan is supposed to be an alien or sci-fi character based on the bundle. He and the characters based on him are not quite human looking. I have the bundle, addons and a bunch of freebies in my cart and deciding whether to pull the trigger. The problem is they have to start offering a wider range of freebies. I will already have everything usable in Daz Studio iRay after this and almost everything in the animals and creatures. They need to not separate out categories.
This isn't an exact match, but it is a Steampunk Weapon by Nightshift3D. It is from the Gen 4 era. I haven't used them yet, but I thought it was the same.
Mary
Please be safe.
Per that request, here are a pair of renders of the Duncan hair... Not what I'd call brilliant. Please note that there's no SubD on the hair, and the individual strips on the top need to be denser to take out that "anime" look.
I think he has a nice level of realism. Here he is with some skin setting adjustment with Altern8. He does have a "boss" vibe to him, as @Thyranq pointed out.
