I crashed last night and slept well.  I even slept in.

wow!  I think the library WiFi is working before they open which I think is new?

  • Shouldn't a "Cabin in the Woods" sale actually have a "Cabin in the Woods" item?  And while we are on the subject, that isn't a "River" in "Bend in the River", it's a "Creek".  You can't jump across a river.  OK, OK, I'm cranky today, I can't afford to buy anything.  And that is a very nice creek.

I am cranky about being broke too.  I have three dollars somewhere but it is cash.

How is Ed?  Tell him he is missed.

Sorry, I have no contact with him.  It's a 4-hr bus ride to the place, 30 minute visit, than 4 hrs back home.  No can do.

Non-complaint:  No concert adventure but I did go for a micro-adventure to one of the household sales I found in the PennySaver ad-rag.  Wow, the house was the full of stuff.  Very neatly displayed but it seems like it was the collection of someone who never had to move.  Most of the stuff (dolls, kitchenware, garage tools, china, more china, and still more china, upteen different collections of glassware, and Christmas cra... er stuff out the wazoo) was of no interest to me.  But I did find a largish Anniversary Clock (horizontally rotating pendulum covered by glass dome), very nice workmanship, bigger and better than the ones I usually see, obviously one of the more expensive models.  Nobody knew if it worked but the price was really low so I bought it.

I also found a small rock collection and in it was a piece of obsidian rock (black volcanic glass) individually priced for a quarter ($0.25) that I snatched up since I'd been looking for a nice piece of obsidian.

I bought the clock because I wanted the glass dome, I see these clocks in lots of yard sales and most of them don't work but I pick them up for next to nothing and use the domes to cover various things in my collections.  However, this clock does work, and even the chime works!  Cool!  And the gold isn't peeling off.  So, despite finally finding the large dome that I'd been looking for, I guess I'll keep it on the the clock for now. (Note: Clock image below is not my clock. Mine is similar but bigger, nicer, golder!)

So is this actually a thread for complaining about stuff?

If so, I'll get something off my chest.

Smartphones. I hate 'em. When you use them for internet you can never see the website, only a tiny fraction. And finding stuff is impossible. And you can never select anything since the letters are so small. Compared to my desktop with 3 x 27inch monitors, smartphones are a joke. And you always have to worry about charging them. You go on youtube and can barely see the video, and you can't see the comments or descriptions. And unless your cell signal is great everything loads so damn slow. At least compared to my 100Mb fiber at home.

How can the entire planet love them so much? I hate them.

    So there.

Oh, and Apple just announced they're the first $1 TRILLION company ever in the US. Unbelievable.

I keep wonderign why anyone would want to watch a movie on a smartphone.  I want bigger and bigger screens for my home theater.  Why would I want to watch on a tiny little thing in the palm of my hand?  And the sound?  Forget about it!  One tiny speaker is useless!  And yes, I know they have Bluetooth speakers.  Again...why?  It's mono!  Not even stereo!  I'm used to great sounding Dolby 5.1 surround sound, or DTS 5.1 surround sound.  A single, weak, mono speaker?  Not even for music!

As for websites, some are designed properly to be viewed on a smartphone.  They will adjust so that you can see things and the page will wrap around to the next level down (scroll to see it).  My site adjusts somewhat.  I haven't gotten all the latest stuff to work yet.  Some sites will even shrink the images and such so that they fit better.  And, of course, you can always pinch and stretch to see things close up if you need to.

Good for them!  Their stuff is so expensive, it's not surprising!

    Dana

I lived in central Florida for a couple decades and have been to Disney and Universal many many times.  My experience for the best times to go has been either late March early April,  or late September early October.  Avoid holidays like Spring Break or Halloween.  Avoid Christmas and Easter.  NEVER GO IN SUMMER!!!!!!!  Possibly a short period in November or February but Florida can get cold.

But do your homework.  Check their website and check in detail.  See what hotel & ticket plans they offer.  Disney is HUGE it's hard to see even one of their parks in one day if you have to wait in lines for the attractions.  If Disney's plan prices are too high, then look at some of the hotel/ticket plans that Universal Studios offers.  The decent hotels near in the Lake Buena Vista area, when used with a park plan, have moderate prices and are essentially "across the street" from Universal Studios and have some good plans with Universal and Disney.  There are lots of great hotels for moderate prices in the DisneySprings (Disney sponsored restaurant & entertainment area) which is right next to Universal Studios and also has the Cirque-du-Soleil show "La Nouba"

The hotel/ticket plans with Disney or Universal offer some perks that you might not get from independent hotels like early entry so that you can get to the Harry Potter stuff before the general public is allowed in.  Do your homework.  Plan.  Study and understand what they offer.  If you arrive by car don't forget that parking is not free.  At Universal its in a covered car park, nice and cool and you have elevators and "slidewalks" like in an airport to take you from the parking garage to the park gates.  If you park at Disney it is a huge open parking lot in the blaring sun.  Don't leave meltables or living things in your car.  Despite many of the Lake Buena Vista hotels being "across the street" from Universal don't figure on walking from your hotel to Universal its still a long walk.  If you don't have a car, take the hotel's bus or take a taxi if you have to get to the park early in the morning to take advantage of an early entry pass.  Do your homework.  Plan.  Both Universal and Disney offer Personal Transport Vehicles (minature golf carts) for about $50/day but they don't take reservations and you have to get there bright and early in the morning before they run out.  I've used one in Universal the last two times I went.  I could never survive the day without one anymore.  Do your homework.  Plan.

PS: Don't take a taxi from Lake Buena Vista area hotels to Disney, it is many miles ($$).  Take the hotel bus if you must use 3rd party transportation.

Oops:  Edited to add that apparently the Cirque du Soleil show "La Nouba" closed at the end of last year.  Don't know if the new show is available yet. sad

Also , the Circue du Soleil show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mP_aTEMpwbA is Disney's attraction at DisneySprings, but at Universal CityWalk they have The Blue Man Group. https://www.universalorlando.com/web/en/us/things-to-do/shows/blue-man-group/index.html Either are worth seeing.

Sorry, but one more PS:  If you really want to enjoy the Harry Potter stuff at Universal, be sure to get a two park ticket.  The Hogwarts Express train runs from "Kings Cross Station" in "Diagon Alley" in one park (Universal Studios) to "Hogsmede" in their other park (Islands of Adventure).

Sorry again:  Universal has the two parks which require an admission fee but between the two parks is their free area called "CityWalk" where they have some shopping, a big multi-cinema theater, several small restaurants, as well as several nice restaurants including the Orlando Hard Rock Cafe, Margaritaville, Emerill's and BubbaGumps.

Oops: yet another PS:  Universal is adding a new roller coaster to the Harry Potter stuff in Hogsmede but it isn't finished yet.  This guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=immkiHBRH6s has lots of videos about the Orlando Parks and other parks around the country and has been reporting weekly on the progress of the new Harry Potter rollercoaster.

...visible water vapour high in the sky (none falling from it) all day. A loverly 74° and more of the same tomorrow but very short lived as by Sunday/Monday it's back into the easy bake oven again.  So much for that more "seasonal" first week of August (as well as chance to douse the woodlands a bit and reduce the fire danger) which they predicted.

tee heee  my fitness workout showed a result today.

i've always had a  hard time closing my folding umbrella,
i'd push it against a wall or a tree and lean my body weigh into it.
i started my routine to close the umbrella, i started pulling on the upper part,
... and it clicked!  i CLOSED the folding umbrella with the strength of my arm muscle.

    pump it up  lol

Yes, this is a thread for (usually OT) complaints. surprise  I believe we're tolerated here because it keeps most of the silly, pedantic, gossipy, irritating or otherwise interruptive complaints out of other threads.  And it's just great fun to find someone who is bugged about some of the same things you are. yes  Balance is achieved by sprinklings of happy or informative "non-complaints" here and there. enlightened

Have not checked either the weather channel or buffalo tv station websites.  I use apps on my iPad or look out the window.

If I look at the weather channel it is only because I want todays weather forecast. If you are looking at a weeks worth of weather they are always wrong. I stick with AccuWeather which is usually pretty accurate.

Well, they were never meant to replace your desktop.  What they were meant to do is replace your MP3 Player, Camera, Beeper, GPS device,  Instant messenger, etc.  Anybody remember the 1990's?  Anybody want to?  For me the first three are the big ones.  And I do have an ipad but I can't stick that in my pocked, the phone I can.  Not only can I take pictures with it, I can take movies (oh yeah, did I mention it replaces a camcorder yet?)  And yes I do realize there are still professional versions of the camcorder and camera running around, but I'm not a professional and the phone does just fine.

So what I'm saying is if you hate the smart phone, you probably just haven't gotten around to figuring out what to use it for yet.  Oh, and I own stock in Apple.  Ka-ching! :P
