Marble, I can't speak for anyone else, but for me getting non dforce clothing to work is a crapshoot even with things you might expect to work, like poser dynamics. Rosemaryr's KOTOR poser dynamic robes for instance, will work okay in some poses and over certain other clothes, then not work in other poses or over certain other clothes. And for every outfit I've gotten to cooperate there's probably three or four I've tried unsuccessfully. Could you give some examples of outfits that haven't worked for you?

I started with some G3F clothes from my library - such as Cute3D and OOT dresses - being careful to choose ones that had few, if any, attachments like laces, etc. Then I tried some very simple clothes like Casual Summer and some of Wilmap's freebies - I thought they would be ideal for dForce but, no, I managed to explode them too. As you say, sometimes they do work, sometimes not. Sometimes a slight change of pose will result in a screen full of polygons. At that point I get frustrated and wish I could afford professional software or find a way to use all of my DAZ content in Blender without spending 10 years learning how.

Yesterday I tried Hongyu's bikini for V7. It has movement morphs for the straps but I can never get them to hang naturally so I gave dForce another go. I guessed it would be a non-starter because - well, they are straps which are on the banned list but I tried. The inevitable happened, of course which led me to this thread for some inspiration.

I did simulate the shirt for Casual Summers with the Dforce Presets without problems. The thing is, the lower part of the shirt slips down, so that made it unworkable (and that might be what's causing the explosions when you try it). I ended up turning "visible in simulation" to off and then lowering the opacity for that surface. Here are the renders:

Straps are not necessarily a no-go, in my experience, but tied knots tend to be, so I'm impressed you got a piece of clothing that involved those to work. OOT clothes, I'm less surprised at those failing, because many of them look like they have subtle modeling details that might involve the mesh poking through itself. Most of the explosions I've had (as opposed to clothes falling apart at the unwielded seams) come down to that, and I think it's why people tend to have less luck with pants than skirts: if the outfit was modelled in the T-pose, then there's a higher possibility that the outfit mesh will end up poking through itself, just because there's not much space for the creator to work with.

It might be possible to tell which clothes pokethrough on themselves by squinting at them in the "lit wireframe" or "wireframe texture shaded" options in the viewport (they're in the list of options above textured shaded, cartoon shaded, and iray), but I confess I just kind of stumble around by trial and error.

With regard to poses, any pose that bends a joint so much that the character mesh touches itself will do the same for the clothing it is wearing (and trigger the pokethrough issues discussed above) but it sounds like you have a pretty good handle on that.

I tried an older dress model for Aiko 3 (yea, the original) called DClassyA3  It's a pretty dress, classic design but it's obviously not welded properly and the trim just explodes and not sure if this can be fixed from within DAZ Studio?  When I tried to weld it in ZBrush I get a notice that it's no longer the same mesh, duh.  I'm just playing, nothing needed but just wondering if this is something that DS can do or am I SOL?

In your shoes, I would probably just hide the trim (white bits at hem and sleeves, maybe collar?) using the opacity dial in the Surfaces tab, and turn DForce simulation off on them (also in the surfaces tab). I think dress would look fine without it.

That's something I'd take to VWD; I've not found a way to get round that. Turning down dynamic strength can help if there isn't going to be lots of movement; failing that I just turn opacity to zero.

I don't recall them actually causing me an issue. Strings, bows, and stuff tied in knots, loops and similar, are a monumental pain.

No, it didn't work for me either. What I meant by "the inevitable" was the explosion and that's what happened when I tried to drape Hongyu's bikini. I even separated the straps so there was no knot (there are mprphs included for that).

Double Breasted Suit for G2M. I was not expecting much from this outfit when I converted to G3M applied the Dforce Master Presets (Preset #1 for Jacket, Pants and Shirt surfaces, Armor Preset on button surfaces, and Corset Preset #1 on the Vest surface), and ran an animated drape with Absolute Basics 04* ( bottom right pose in this image) as the final pose. But it worked pretty well, except that the vest rode up on top of the shirt collar on the left side (some side effect of the pose or the preset used on the vest) and the shirt buttons ends up in a weird place. If I revisit this one, I might try a less stiff preset on the vest or a stiffer one on the shirt, and hide the shirt buttons.

    * This is my go-to pose for dforce and autofit tests because it moves *everything* in a fairly dramatic way, and the knee bends and wide stance are particularly hard on skirts and trousers. If you use it for the same thing, don't freak out when the autofitted shoes deform at the front-it's due to the toe poses. If the shoes look okay with the toes zeroed, you should be good to go.

Followup note on Double-breasted Suit: Corset Preset 1 is a better bet for shirt surface.

Just got me Rendevouz G3F by kaleya at Rendo. It's a single piece of "cloth" with a couple adjustment morphs, which after adding the dForce dynamic modifier behaves quite nice under dForce. No further effort needed it seems (no weightmapping etc.). I tested it with a couple of ballet poses and it didn't explode.. Not sure if this fits the "out of the box" definition, as the dynamic has to be added (though that's only a single click...)

True out of the box comes with the dForce flimsy T Dress G3F/G8F by nirvy also at Rendo. Great looks and textures and dForce settings are already applied, with an option give to get the area around the breasts a bit "stickier" to avoid too much of them being unclothed when dForcing. There's also many "click this" icons for hints when to use any of the additional morphs (like before or after simulating).

Mod Edit:- to remove unsolicited Off site Commercial links

Yeah, "out of the box" in this case refers to clothes that weren't officially set up for dforce but work with it anyway.  Thanks for letting us know about both Rendo outfits.

The dress in the Egyptian Outfit for Genesis 3 Female(s) works well. I only turned off Self Collide. The belt does not work out of the box. It falls apart.

In this image, the dress is on a moprphed G8F.

yes, but they are not connected; the problem with explosions seems to be that intersecting meshes cause issues for me.

  • V3 Starlight Gown works - not quite 100% out of the box unless you like "top around her waist" look, but a pretty minimal weight map kept it on board.  Wasn't brave enough to try the wraps and dress at the same time, but they looked good too.

    Nice Job!

Don't have any pictures to share, but in case anyone picked up the temporarily free Frangipani Bundle here's some advice on converting the dress to dforce, and tweaking the surfaces:

-hide the handles, and set them as simulation off

-set all surfaces except string to self-collide off.

-set string to simulation strength of 0.1 - I had trouble with it trying to fly off at right angle to the dress while still being attached to it before I fixed the simulation strength.

-set all surfaces except dress_lace to Bend Stiffness of 0.2. Dress_lace does fine with default bend stiffness setting.

-set dress_lace to simulation strength of 0.9 and an expansion contraction ratio of 95%

-set sleeve_band surface to an expansion/contraction ratio of 99%

Notes on autofitting this V4 dress to G3F, which probably also hold true for converting to G8F: it works okay, assuming you have the appropriate clones, but the sleeves will distort because they are so long that they are basically trying to rig themselves to the character's finger. DForce goes a long way towards fixing that.
