...need to get a new set of headphones as the ones I have are beginning to seriosuly flake out on me.
Now I'm old school and don't have and issue with a cord going to the box so not into all this Bluetooth/wireless stuff (don't even have wireless card in the computer). Went to my usual outlet, Newegg, but just about everything in their catalogue ships from some other vendor (mostly in China so if I'm not paying extra for express shipping its on the "slow boat"). So next went to Frys as there is a store here in the Portland area that is actually reachable via transit (though a long trip).
Now I'm not int online gaming or even talking with someone online (don't even have a web cam and I like it that way) so I don't need a built in microphone either (which a lot of headsets seem to have these days). Also not into sticking things in my ears so earbuds are definitely out.
OK yeah. I'm picky, but I'm from the old Hi-Fi days, worked in radio, worked in audio production studios, and all I want is something simple and reliable so I can set up a playlist on YouTube to listen to music while I'm working late nights or stream a film without disturbing the other tenants.
After narrowing things down through filters on the Fry's site, came across a set of Sony studio monitor headphones for 78$ (normally 99$). Still a bit pricey for my budget, but with a response of 5Hz - 30KHz that covers pretty much the spectrum I need and they have a generous 10' cord so I can move between the two desks without worry. The review by C|Net gives them very good marks at one point mentioning "They may be close to 30 years old, but the comfortable fitting Sony MDR-V6s are arguably the best-sounding headphones for under $100."
Sounds like just what the doctor ordered. So tomorrow, "road trip" (via transit) to Frys.
I still have my Radio Shack by Koss headphones from the 70s, and they still sound good. You do realize that you can't hear 30KHz, nor 5KHz, right?
At 1:00 am Wednesday, it was 59F. At noon on Wednesday, it was 47F.
At 12:30 am today it was 31F, right now...3:17 am, it's 37F.

...true, though it still helps with the clarity
When I was tested the last time I was in college (1980s) my upper end topped out at around 23KHz (soundproofed booth not in sight of the physician so I couldn't see when he triggered the tones which when he played them told me to point up with one hand). While he was a bit surprised this is not completely unusual. Now I'm sure with age it has diminished somewhat, however I never attended loud indoor rock concerts, cranked the Hi-Fi to "11", and am always careful to cover my ears when there is loud noise like sirens or machinery about. Back then I was not the one you wanted to take along to help buy a Hi-Fi system if you intended to do it on the cheap.
When I use headphones I adjust the EQ and volume to what would be analogous to live acoustic instruments in a cathedral, concert hall, or recital hall setting. With my old HiFi (currently in storage) I never would set it above 35%. Normally I would use flat response studio monitor speakers again with EQ set to similar to what I do with headphones to get the "live venue" effect. This is part of why I don't like going to first run cinemas these days as they crank up the volume and bass so much I actually find it painful, and it can even make the dialogue somewhat unintelligible. At home when I stream a film, I can set the volume and EQ to a much "saner" level.
Considering hos soundproofed new cars are today, It really makes me wonder about people's hearing when they turn up the volume so loud I can hear every note and lyric from the outside with the windows closed.
thanks
feelin a bit better.
a lil weak and woozies though. am i too old to cry just becuz?
Complaint: Don't have much to say really, so I often forget about the thread ;v;
Non-Complaint: Cakeday tomorrow. Will be 27 yrs old, and there will be cake and soda. Also cake. Hope some family will be able to come over for a bit too, but if not then it'll mostly just be cake and soda - minus people to share it with...
I'm not sure what is/was my hearing range, but I once freaked out a jewelry store manager when I walked up and asked if his safe was closed and locked. He said, warily, "Yes, why?" My reply was "I can hear your alarm going off and it's giving me a headache". I left before I could see if he checked the safe.
Happy Birthday!
Caaake <3
Eggplant and chicken sounds good! And stay warm.. sounds like hot toddy weather..
Good day! Another chilly day in Austin, cloudy but no rain right now. A lovely 45f out so the window is only open a tiny crack for fresh air.
Brussel sprouts were a fail. I set the temp too high and by the time I figured it out they were crispy on the outside and raw in the middle. Ugh, inedible. Ended up having Summer sausage and cheese for dinner.
Starting Monday I'll be setting the alarm again and getting back into a more or less normal sleep cycle. Not looking forward to that as I now stay up until 2am and sleep until Noon.
Grocery delivery day, lot of ingredients.. mainly veggies and cheese. I want to cook up a black bean stew with peach raspberry chipotle sauce and mesquite bbq some sausage. Yum!
Whole room smells like Brussel sprouts, blech...
woes, those toy helicopters i giving for christmas take x6 AA batteries a piece, for the controller i think.
i should give a starter set of batteries with them. ouch moolas.

I remember Van Daamme - martial arts guy. What a great name for a fighter! Van DAMN.
Lunch here will be a piece of cheese and a piece of Summer sausage since the air fryer is tued up cooking black bean stew.
More Top Chef to watch! And it got colder.. 42f out.. hot tea time..
Smooooooothie yum with potassium!
Tea time
B;ack bean stew done, and it is omfg hot but super-tasty! Black beans, diced green chiles, beef sausage, and the insanely good peach-raspberry chipotle sauce. Cooked for about 3 hours, stirring every half hour, just added a little water as it cooked down. You can really taste the raspberry, which works really good with the black beans. I wasn't certain how this would come out, it was a gamble, but it paid off! 2-3 meals worth for the fridge
I think I have just rnough time to slow cook more beef sausage in the mesquite bbq sauce, so glad I bought more storage containers, but the bbq usually never survives the night.
Wheeeeeeee, snout on fire! Glad nobody has to be around me tomorrow... :-O
...the journey to Frys is more convoluted than I thought. Have to head west to Beaverton then take this limited run commuter rail service south to Wilsonville. It pretty much means spending the entire day down there as the commuter train only operates during the morning and late afternoon/early evening. There is a separate bus operated by the Wilsonville transit system that connects with Portland's transit system on the south side, though they do not honour Tri Met tickets/passes, so it means actually having to go to the bank and taking some money out and then needing to have that "exact change" as they only take cash fares (how barbaric). It also means a very long grueling ride all the way back into town on local streets compared to the LRT tram and commuter train (and I can do the latter on a single old fart's 2.50$ day ticket [using a fare app on my phone] since Portland's transit system operates both services).
Hence, didn't make it there today as I had to get up fairly early. Not into spending the midday hours in what I call 'Warehouseville" waiting for the first train back to Beaverton. Not even a decent coffee shop there to hole up at as it's "suburbia" at it's worst.
is 7pm. sleepy early or couple hours of witcher3
Happy birthday to you!
Why does misery love company?
When out with friends at a mall, I used to keep asking..."What's that sound?" They'd ask what sound, and I'd tell them it's a high-pitched whine or whistle...constant. They never heard it. One time someone suggested that it had something to do with security systems. I don't know for sure. But sometimes it really started to bother me.

Alkaline batteries are not rechargeable. Some try to, but it's dangerous and ill advised.
You tellig Santa to hit the trail?

My pillows miss me so I need to spend some special time with them. Nice happy pilows need a pillow mist which is a body mist for pillows
So I just learned that my cat is at least fifteen or sixteen years old. I was trying to remember how long I had her, when I asked my family who said we got her around 2001'ish. Earliest photo I have of her was from 2005 or so. Aaaaah she's been such a good cat ;v;
Thankies~
Tends to vary on the individual and the situation I guess, but with me when I'm miserable I love having a friend to talk to - much better than being alone, bored, and miserable.
Happy Birthday, Rezca!
Dana
...bugger, how'd I miss this?
Rezca, Happy belated 27th trip around our central main sequence stellar primary.
...received an email tonight from Marvelous Designer that they now have a Goz bridge with Zbrush.
Actually, there were some rechargable alkalines made a few years back, don't know if they're still available. I don't think they compared well to nicads.
Used to recharge regular D-cells by touching them for a few moments to a pair of jumper cables, just to make the flashlight last long enough to finish the emergency repairs. You could tell it was just right when they would double as hand warmers. Good times.
Complaint: Number in the thread title is getting dangerously low!
Misty: I got one of those helicopters a few years aho - great fun once I got the hang of it!
Sadly its final resting place was high up in the branches of a tree.
Runs around screaming, oh my oh no! Got to finish Christmas shopping!
