  • @KK: Water Woes:  Not that I expect a water outage, but I've managed to accumulate a dozen or more bottles of water for emergencies or to have handy in the car for whatever reason.  When I'm on a budget and want to eat out, I often find myself at Wendy's.  For several months they've had a "4 for $4" deal where I can get a small bacon cheeseburger, fries, chicken nuggets, and a drink for $4.  I also took advantage of their limited deal at the end of last year to get a keychain tag that entitles me to a free Wendy's mini-Frosty milkshake type thing for all of 2017 when I buy a meal.  So I essentially get "5 for $4" if I show them my tag.  I eat the fries and Frosty in the store, but take the burger, nuggets and drink home to warm up later.  But the drink I get is a 12 oz. bottle of water which I don't drink.  I now have a half a cabinet shelf full of Wendy's water.  Not a big deal but the pleasure of squeezing every penny I could from Wendy's was worth it. smiley

But speaking of woes:  Complaint:  My credit card is screaming in pain again.   I just got remembered that October is also the month when my AAA Roadside Auto Service subscripton comes due.  I have their "Premier" service so the bill is always a bit of a shock when it shows up on my credit card.  But I also re-read the brochure that comes with it explaining what my extra benefits are and I think "Oh yeah, I must take advantage of one of those soon."  Never happens of course but I could save a bundle if I ever remembered to plan a couple weekend car rental trips.

Non-complaint: The big advantage of my AAA Membership is that if my 14 year old car dies anywhere within 200 miles of my home I don't have to pay a penny to get it towed home and get a 1-day rental car for me.   And I've used my AAA service several times for flat tire, stuck in the mud/snow, busted brake lines, out of gas, type problems.  Never a bill, never a problem.  Just call 'em up and wait 20-40 minutes they fix the issue and put you on your way or tow the car to your garage guy.  The peace of mind is worth it.  Especially when you're nearly 70, and just don't want to futz around changing tires or crawling under cars.  That's what young people are for. devil

Similar thing with the RAC here. As my dad used to say, "It'll come in handy if you never use it!"

Aye.   I am quite fond of the security of having an RAC membership. I used to have a Company membership as well on my Company Vehicle, which came in very useful  Van broke Down,  out come RAC, start the van, tell me to drive it to the nearest main dealer, where I get a nice replacement car while they fix it. I had a trip scheduled to take something we had borrowed back to our Birmingham Branch. line manager says "wait till you get you own vehicle back, rather than driving that distance in a replacement vehicle. They said my van was sorted, they had replaced the alternator, so I picked it up and drove up to Birmingham on one of them grotty days when the weather was "iffy"  so hhad to keep turning on lights and/or wipers from time to time, run fan to keep screen clear as had to keep windows shut due to drizzly rain and it was August, so quite warm.

End result,  arrived at our Birmingham Branch,  returned borrowed equipment, got back into van,  whci wouldn't start again.   So call the RAC , who go right over the car,  take alternator out, replace it again, doesn't fix it. Seems it is far more serious than just an alternator.   So I got another replacement vehicle, this time, as it was coming up for bank holiday weekend, they were short of economy type cars, so I got a nice, top of the range Peugeot 406 with air con and all the works.  And as my van needed the electrics sorted out I was able to swank around for several days in this lovely bright red peugeot instead of my normal white van. (this was back in 1995 to explain the 406 being the in vehicle)

...the city has been stressing to have enough water for emergencies (I guess they feel the big quake is imminent), 1 gallon per person per day for two weeks.  Where do they think I am supposed to stash 14 gallon jugs or water?  I'm in a small studio apartment not a house.

No Wendy's within walking distance where I am. Closest is over on the other side of the river near the arena which means taking transit (another1.25$ one way) to get there.. Suddenly that 4.00$ meal becomes nearly 7$.  Also pretty much have sworn off fast food because of the fat, sodium, and other rubbish ingredients they use.  Better just to make things at home where I have control over what I am eating. I won't go for less than 9% fat for ground beef, also will not purchase cheap meats and poultry that are pumped up with all those growth hormones and antibiotics or produce sprayed or genetically engineered to include chemical insecticides and herbicides.

Sadly, eating healthy is expensive thanks to the "trend" it has become.  You use no chemicals, no genetically modified organisms, do less work, but charge higher prices than the over processed "artificially everything" laden crap.  Were I in Zagreb, I could get meats from naturally raised animals/fowl, and organically grown produce for lower prices then the factory produced rubbish costs here.

...surprisingly sunny here today, should reach 60°.  Was supposed to be all gloom and rain yesterday but it was only until just after noon.

Cold morning here, 39°.  Good time for hot rolled oats and sausage for brekkie.

Tomorrow and Monday, more sun and temps in the upper 60s before back to wet and chilly again.

$16 or thereabouts. Fairly typical price here for a mug like that.

  • Back in the day... (early middle of the latter half of the last century) I had a mug that had the transporter from the original Star Trek on it and when the cup changed temperature the people disappeared and reappeared  Cool!

Back in the '50s I remember seeing a ball point pen at the bus garage where my father worked that had a picture of a pin-up girl in liquid on the barrel of the pen and if you turned it upside down, her swimsuit came off.  We've had all the important technology for decades!

this would make a cute christmas present?

comes with tips to make fancy whip cream designs.  whip cream without corn syrup
down side is it needs N20 Cartridges.

  • kyoto kidkyoto kid Posts: 41,857

...yeah a bother, but real whipped creme like you get at the coffee shop without the achy elbow and wrist from doing it by hand.

  • Those are great! I have one and it's one of the best things I ever bought. The nitrous oxide cartridges are fairly cheap, and small and easy to store.
