Well you have to look at filters that have transparency. There aren't many, they're usually solid.
https://www.filterforge.com/filters/11625.html
EDIT: The person who said normal maps worked also said their license didn't work, so they were probably running the trial.
Has anyone managed to get the serial number to work? I've submitted a ticket. Still can't be certain this version has the pro features, as without the serial number, I am just using at the fully functional free trial.
Just want to say that I bought 6 early this year with the same excuse but I stil buy shader packs so much!
I have used FF to generate normal maps of older textures I’m converting to iray, though.
Eta: and I’ve picked that function up as standalone filter, soooo there are always ways.
Darn. Then it is kind of urgent that we get that confirmation. Really, it isn't that hard to add it in the name.
I will be very annoyed if it turns out to be not as advertised, because by that time, the 80% off filter forge site sale will almost certainly be over.
Yeah, i'd definitely like to know this too. I've been eyeing up Filter Forge for a while but I unfortunately missed their last major sale (i'm not interested in paying a monthly subscription).
There are separate entries for the Pro Windows and Mac versions in the Filterforge Daz store (and they cost more money) which leads me to believe the one with no designation is not in fact the pro version:
https://www.daz3d.com/filter-forge
The thing is, at this price-point it doesn't fit any of the Filterforge offerings in the official site. If we believe the feature list is correct, it can only be the professional edition, but, as you've pointed out, it is weird that it is offered so cheaply and without a distinction between platforms. Hence our anxious hand-wringing as we await a judgment from on high.
I sent in a ticket asking what version it was and my response was "the serial numbers are not working" so I responded asking again what version this was, no answer yet..... so for those of you wondering about serial numbers they are working to get new numbers, but still no official answer as to what version this is. They did say the "30 day free trial" means you have 30 days to put your serial number in...
There are actually more than one on sale, but only one listed on the sale page.... How many noticed?
Filter Forge is listed as a Featured Artist on the sale page.
I would hazard a guess that this version of FF 6 is possibly the standard version. Otherwise, it would say professional. FF 4 that is in the store says professional on it. The current version does not. I would be interested if anyone can say for sure once they have their serial number working. The big thing with the pro version is that you have both 16 bit and 32 bit options and you can render a texture at larger than 4000 x 4000 px. The ability to make bump, normal, and diffuse, as well as others, comes with standard and up.
No, you don't have to use FF in Photoshop. I have FF 5 Pro and I use it only as a standalone product.
Edited To Add... When I read this I did not realize the bulk of the commentary and questions in this thread refere to the DAZ store version of Filter Forge... My comments are in reference to the Filter Forge Website version and sale...
Reading through this thread, I thought I'd mention a few things...
•If you miss the big sale, give it a few weeks, there will be another sale... Filter Forge frequently has 70%- 80% off sales.
•Standard and Professional versions are the best buys... Standard allows you to make your own filters or alter others... Pro is ultimately the best because it has the most features and value (especially because of the render maps feature).
•As far as the bump and normal maps are concerned (the feature for diffuse, bump, normal and occlusion are called "render maps" in FF), they are only accessible in the pro version, but not all filters have them because not all filter authors know how to use the feature... Also really old ones sometimes tend to not have them because it took a while for people to figure out how to use them... And also because most of the photo effects filters are just photo effects and don't need render maps.
•If anyone decides to go the cheaper route and buy the basic or standard version, you can sort of get around the lack of bump and normal maps by using these filters...

https://www.filterforge.com/filters/9954.html
With an image editor and a bit of trial and error you might make some decent bump or normal maps, but you'll miss out on diffuse maps which you'll really need if you want to make good PBR materials... The diffuse maps look different from the regular texture renders (usually because the contain lighting highlights or directional shadows), which don't look as good when turned into PBR materials or if you intend to 3D paint with them... For that you really get better results using diffuse and normal maps.
•Most of the 12,000 filters (a few of which I've contributed too) are submitted to the library by filter forge users... Their skills vary, some are good, some great and other kinda suck and are just ripoffs of other filters. Most are pretty good and most are useful in some way or other.
•Filter Forge does not need Photoshop to work... I do occasionally use photoshop with FF, but 98% of the time I use it standalone and it works flawlessly.
•As mentioned before, the statement "You'll get a permanent license key for a one-time fee" means for that version and that level (basic, standard or pro)... That was probably meant to distinguish this from a subscription. There is an additional level above "Professional"... "Professional Plus"... "a lifetime upgrade to all future Filter Forge versions"... Which basically is a onetime payment that gives you a lifetime professional license upgrade, but that is not meant to be confused with the "permanent license key" statement.
•Something to keep in mind to avoid disappointment or confusion... If you buy version 6, you'll be able to use all filters from versions 6 to 1... But when version 7 comes out, version 7 filters will not work with version 6... Usually this isn't a problem, because when a new version come out, it usually takes quite a while for good filters to show up, and at this point there are so many filters, it's not a big deal... But eventually you may start seeing filters you like that won't work in your version.
•I find the best way to get answers or report problems with Filter Forge, is to either contact them directly through "Contact" at their website, or by asking on their forums, especially "Bugs and Problems"... In my experience they are usually pretty good with follow up.
Awesome post McGyver but please allow me a few corrections. I think the render maps (bump, normal, etc.) feature was not even a thing until version 2. Also, on some newer filters, it isn't a matter of the filter author knowing how to set them up, but a matter of end result. In some cases the extra maps are not needed, and in other cases, having the height maps, etc., as part of the finished filter does not give the effect the filter author is looking for, so they may decided to do a simple filter instead. Your example of the diffuse map only versus the final filter result is a good example of this. The render maps OFF option has the lighting and height maps baked into the final result, and sometimes this is not desireable.
To address the original topic of the thread, my specualtion is that the FF version 6 here at Daz, based on price point is the Standard version, and not the
Pro, but it would be great if someone could get a definitive answer. I've been upgrading with Filter Forge directly since version 3 came out, and they do have specials on their upgrades as well as regular 80% off saels. It is an awesome piece of software for anyone who likes to make texture maps.
.
That's only with the render maps OFF, i.e., rendering the full filter as one texture. You can render diffuse maps, etc separately.
EDIT: Seriously, go to the Filter Forge site and look at their actual promos, preview filters to see if you like any. This DAZ store info is worthless.
.
So..has anyone heard anything?
.
heh.. I got confused by the date change, thinking no one had posted on this in hours or a day. oops.
.
"Licence Name . . . .LICENCE NAME" What bloody licence name?
No info in serial numbers, order or product page about any licence name. Guess I'll have to wait 'till (US) monday to find out.
Guess I should have taken my money down to the local BDSM Salon.
Pack58,
I think your answer is in this thread:
https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/63183/filter-forge-license-key-not-recognized-from-daz
in more detail page 2 and 3 of this thread:
https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/41171/filter-forge-pro/p2
Edit: I didn't get Filter Forge through DAZ3D so don't know for sure but I suspect the license/serial info discussed in these threads is to be found in your account under the heading serial numbers.
Thanks Pixel8ted. Will start chomping my way through those.
Just so you know filter speeds vary....some apply really fast while others are grindingly slow.
I would suggest running it as a standalone application if using Photoshop because if FF crashes....Photoshop crashes. If do run Filter Forge as a Photoshop plugin, I would strongly suggest saving your file right before using the Filter so you have a fail-safe.
Don't worry about chomping through those threads, it's not the same issue. I have a ticket raised with support, they can replicate the issue with my serial number and name from Daz and have contacted the vendors for help. Looks like there is an issue with the generated numbers.
Cheers dawnydawny. Had worked out it wasn't the same issue 'cos there's no "Licence Name" of any type in the provided serial.
Just have to put in a ticket and wait till whenever to discover if it's even the version I'm after. One of those weeks LOL.
Th store version is Fitler Forge 6 Pro, we have been informed.
Huzza! Now, if only we could use our licenses...
Nice. Thanks for the word.
