...I thought that 4.3 fixed pretty much all the bugs (as I read so).

I just like to avoid having to deal with virtual memory for rendering all the time to save wear and tear on the HDD.  As with Daz 3.1 and UE, I am finding myself very restricted in scene complexity to keep everything in physical memory.

You still get jaggies with accelerated modes. Its pretty good but im just used to this workflow for now.. Iary does seem to take a bigger toll on a machine..

...if I have to wait countless hours for a scene ot render, at least with Lux I have more free memory for the render process with the Daz programme and scene file down thus reducing excess wear on eh HDD.

If I had the 255$ to spare for the 24 GB memory kit I need and W7 Pro OEM, this wouldn't as much an issue as at least then I would have enough memory overhead to keep the process from going into swap mode

I stepped away for a few months. My cat got sick had to put her down just a sh*tty time. Since I have re started I have been using iray not sure I tried the lastest Reality / Lux..

Doing interior renders with HDRI after someone said it couldn't be done. Using DimensionTheory's iRadience Studio HDRIs - just hid a wall of A Cozy Kitsch Living Room and rendered for 900 samples to save time...

Wide shot with character 2048 x 1152 in Gallery - 6 minutes 43 seconds with an ASUS GTX 780 ti

Medium shot with character 2048 x 1152 in Gallery 6 min 59 seconds with an ASUS GTX 780ti

Thats another thing over Reality lux. Much after times using iray

...again nice and fast when you either have a GPU that can hold both the geometry and texture load throughout the render process or you don't create very complex scenes. Again most of my scenes would tax even a 6 GB card let alone a 3 or 4 GB one.

Im not all that technical when it comes to specs I have a GTX 980 in my tower and a 980M in my ROG laptop. I use the tower to render. I have the laptop at work to set up scenes build characters ect on my breaks.

All I know is something like this http://fav.me/d9vf7oi would be harder to set up on reality lux and may make lux crash what frustrates me more is the lack of evolution with Studio itself where it can be painful to move certain characters through the programme itself..

...yeah my railway station scene is a real pain to make any posing or positioning adjustments to Part of it is most likely due to the amount of memory it chews up (over 8.7 GB just by itself when uncompressed) and the old 1 GB GPU that is driving two displays.

When I load the scene I get a total "whiteout" of the main window for several minutes and the scene takes a long time to load (I only have the viewport and render/scene tabs on one display with al the rest of the tabs on the other to maximise the viewport).

This is why I need a Titan-X with 12 GB or even better, a Quadro P5000 with 16 GB for Iray GPU rendering.

Yeah that would be nuts. I am done investing in laptops / notebooks. They just dont have the same power a tower does for x amount spent on a machine. I am just going to wait a bit and if I am still motivated with this hobby will build a new system with PASCAL 1080.. Something fun http://fav.me/d9zbj0u

It would be easier to use iray and Lux if iray materials worked in both but sadly that is not the case..

...also a pain when working in 3DL or Carrara.

Yeah I have a tower, but I built it several years ago when 3DL and Lux were the only render engine choices.  Back then 12 GB was quite a bit of memory (now it won't even support the new Planet Earth Ultra HD) and 1 GB of video memory was more than sufficient.   Today it seems you need at least 32 GB of physical memory as well as 8 GB of video memory for reasonably large scenes in Iray and multiple cards for improved rendering speed.

Currently that is not in the cards right now let alone the optimal system I designed, crikey, like I mentioned, I can't even afford to upgrade my current system just to have enough memory overhead for CPU rendering.

It is discouraging when, like last night, even a simple scene with just two characters a basic ambient HDRI, a single photometric spot and a plain backdrop takes almost an hour to render at 900 x 900 resolution.

My 3 1/2 yr old tower is 32G my 1yr old Laptop 24G the tower multi tasks way better. I can still do some stuff while rendering. I have high settings on iray and let it run until I am happy.

    Thank you everyone.

Her promos are 10+ years old so there is a huge difference in tech used

  • And, guess who is in the mega fg!  I'm picking up Staci today!

I finally had a few hours this weekend to practice my lighting and posing and iray rendering, one character is Brita with the default HDR and the other is Anna with defaault HDR and IDG portrait Studio lighting.

Those both look very nice.  Especially the Elf.

TerraDome3 sky and land, ranaka legs on Genesis, Mr Turtle elements, catworld regenesis lion skin, ranaka set cattails.

(Happy Ranaka legs turned out to be useful)

  • @JVRenderer  It looks great for a first Iray render.  The only problem I see has nothing to do with the lighting or the render itself, that is very well done.  You might to make an adjustment with the table and move it back until it's just under her but, though, as the table is cutting into her leg.  Since there doesn't look to be much leeway in her pose, moving the table should work.

Will - That's quite a mash up!  It looks interesting.

Regarding recent thing about 'cgi art,' part of what makes this a creative art, to me, is having an eye for stuff that fits/doesn't fit a particular goal, and gaining the experience to tweak an image to create a desired result.

Also, the ability to think about your collection of content and bring it together for a purpose.

This doesn't have to be crazy monster things, but stuff like 'ok, I have this wonderful dance pose that I'd like to use, maybe this skin, that lighting... no, lighting isn't working right, maybe x... ooo, this environment would be perfect ... ok, now she's washing into the environment, better dim the lights and put a soft spot on her' etc.

That ability to fine-tune effects toward a visual goal is, IMO, where the art comes into play.

Yep, easily the best first Iray render I have seen. Good work!

  • My latest Iray image.  I just love these Plushies.  I seem to try and render them any chance I get.  Using the new Hand Knit Shaders seemed like a good excuse to render them again.  Post in beta GIMP 2.9 with the NIK Analog Effects for an older camera feel.  It seems so counter intuitive to add grain to an image you try really hard to render without grain, but I like the effects.

That does have a very nice photographic feel to it.  If I did not know 3D art I would have believed
