  • So this is a render of 150 instances of Orestes: Them Bones for Iray inside of Jack Tomalin's: Winterblack Halls. I wanted to set up a quick backdrop for some horror renders for all of the spoopy new products that I am sure will come out in October. I knew that Ultrascatter Advanced would allow me to make something that looked more like Oreste's promo pics where it has multiple instances of bone piles. I hadn't used Ultrascatter yet so I thought would be complex and intimidating.

It was extremely easy for this type of simple scattering. I didn't know going into that you pick your object to repeat and then you pick a parent prop. So, I figured out that I could select just the floor prop and hit scatter. Then I discovered that I could do a random rotate and after that I just had to do it 4 more times because this version of Winterblack Halls had 5 floor tiles. 5 minutes and 150 instances later my scene was ready to render.  I was amazed at how fast it rendered. It seemed to render just as fast as a single pile of bones. I am new to having this many instances and I think I will have to do more. I am thinking about trying a stadium filled with lo-rez people.

For this render I used the following products:

Photoshop does this 'snap to' guide when moving layers and pasted items that's SO freaking useful if you don't have fine motor.

DId you use emissive or photometric lighting?

..and how long did the render process take (CPU or GPU)?

...yeah but like I mentioned, I don't have PS, only Gimp so going to try the plugin and see how that works.

Thanks. I just loaded up Winterblack Halls and used the default Night scene for Iray. There are a couple of hallway configurations I believe. I just opened it up to check that the default lighting is indeed all emmisive. I know you can't see out the windows on the left, but I am using an HDRI night sky there. They barely light the scene but I was getting some weird shadows with the default Daz skydome. The biggest thing I do is I just keep turning down the Shutter Speed to get it to where those candles light up the entire hall. That is my favorite part about Iray, setting up realistic lights and not needing to add extra spotlights. I think the Atmocam atmosphere helps the light to be more transmitted around the scene since that is what that prop does. It is just a big ball of a transparent transmission-color only surface.

This is a GPU render on a single Titan X. It cranks right through all of those emmisive lights. I have had scenes with 100+ emissive lights and it all renders very fast. I had a good 800x800 render for this in about 30 minutes but then I got tired so I did another one at 5000x5000 and went to bed. I left it running while at work and this is result. I usually do that. I might as well keep that GPU busy doing some test render.

Havent posted here in a while, my renders of late are not appropriate for DAZ. The Iray renders in this post get better and better. Always nice to see the bar raised for our art form.

If any who remember or like my art you can see what i been up to on my deviant page (caution nudity ahead) Nothing graphic mostly artistic nudes. http://surreal-muse.deviantart.com/

Dumor3D's new penthouse suite level 1 has a really nice showroom setting.  Mirrors were done simply by setting the Refraction weight to 0.  ALL lighting is mesh lights in the set, exactly as loaded for the showroom setting.

Thanks Matty! Nice work doing the mirroring instead of the glass. That's a really nice effect. And wow, I'm surprised you didn't do any tweaks to the lights. I know how you like play with things. Yes, it is a mix of emitters and IES profiles on the cans and spots in the scene. I tried to build in a large variety of options on those. And that's a very nice uh.... car in the scene. ;)

    thx,

Yep, just applied the Skin TuneUp script and fixed the texture's gamma from inside studio's Image Editor dialog. I set it 1.8. I found Iray doesn't forgive gamma mistakes.

jag11, those pictures are near photos, but there's something about the eyes that seems slightly glassy. Hrm. Maybe some very slight roughness to the shine?

Well, let me be clear, they are better than 99% of the Iray portraits I see.

This is a test render I did recently to show my son how easy Daz is to use.  Took literally 15 minutes.
