Thanks for the pointer, going to hav a look at it.
For 3,89 it is a steal and worth to play around with it
Teen josie 7 on megafastgab $11 O_o
Maybe I'm being too hard on it. It is trending, so SOMEONE is buying it.
I wonder how many copies have to sell before an item shows as trending... Is it 100 in an hour, or 10 in a day? :)
Daz keeps such valuable information to themselves.
I always thought 'trending' just reflected the items that were currently enjoying the most sales and that it wasn't necessary to hit a specific figure (and I suppose it isn't, because something is always trending and unless the target was really low, there would be no guarantees that there would always be an item that was making the sales numbers). Whereas 'most popular' would involve products that had made the most sales ever, rather than in whatever time-frame is defined as current for 'trending'. I have managed to get about five hours sleep over two days and so am probably talking rubbish, but I know what I mean to be saying :)
I have owned that police car for a while, and it is true that it's pretty much a distance prop. I have vague memories of trying to resurface it once using 3DL shaders, but I think the problem lay with geometry. Or two very different texture types sharing one material zone. I forget now. Either way, I didn't get the end result I was after. Having said that, I probably lacked a lot of the experience I've got these days (and even that isn't a massive amount!) I might tackle it again with iray shaders at some point soon.
Yes, but the data that feeds those trending displays can be used to produce some valuable information; if it's processed correctly at least.
I don't know about the Trending filter, but the What's Hot feature is based on money. I think it was Sickleyield who had her Commercial Game Developers License in the top spot after one purchase. It wasn't on sale at the time and was $2K... (Turned out to be a fraudulent purchase, though. Sad.) But it was because of that I learned DAZ lists them by the amount of money we spend... at least they did at the that time.
His. But yes, Havos I believe was the main person to surmise that What's Hot is $1K+ in sales (actual money not just discounts) but it's mostly educated guesses and now that there are two What's Hot lists for no reason who knows how any of it works.
Damn, that sucks, but Fraudulent Purchase? That just seems pointless.
More than two. Seven if you click on the 'show more'.
Please remember, the "Police Car" was made literally twelve years ago. It's ANCIENT. I mean, four digit SKU here. Back then, we were supposed to only have ONE "art" render, and all the rest were just the object on a white background.
On the other hand, it IS twelve years old. I had only been a DAZ PA for a little over a year when I made that, and that's before I determined that realistic cars are not my thing... and as for the price, there's one thing keeping me from lowering it, and it's something I'm almost ashamed to say.
It still sells, and sells consistantly. Sure, there's plenty of cars out there on DAZ and other sites that would look a LOT better with a "cop car" paint job than mine, but hey. And when it stops selling, it's SO old, I'll probably just remove it from the store.
At least those ones have categories. What do the first two mean? Obviously it's meant to be "overall" but is the leftmost on the second row the 2nd best selling, or the best selling not in a first category, or is it meant to come after the hidden stuff scrolled away on the first one, or... It's so bad.
No idea; I'd guess they're meant to be confusing. :)
From personal observation: Top row contains mostly figures/characters and clothing related stuff: characters, poses, wardrobe, hair, morphs, shaders, etc.; Second row contains places and things. Though I notice Jepe's PillarZ, so maybe place, things, and effects. (Never clicked on the Show More before today...)
I have zero "inside information", but perhaps the top row is over a longer period of time than the bottom? Or maybe one is $ made and the other is total # sold?
The source of the webpage shows they are from different categories.
Top: categories 2343,2373,2373,2393,2296,3714
Bottom: categories 2375,3449
But maybe this doesn't have any actual meaning. The second row is named "Animals and places", but it's clearly showing other stuff as well.
Fair enough. 12 years ago, I bet it looked fantastic.
And if people are consistently paying your asking price for it - you would be a fool to lower the price.
The funny thing is, I bet DAZ would turn away an artist submitting that car *today* as a new item... even though as an old one, it is still making you decent money, from the sounds of things.
My guess was based on a sale of an undiscounted piece of software costing about 1000, that shot to the top of the "What's Hot" for one day, and then quickly dropped down again. Assuming just one license has been sold, that would mean you would need around 1000 worth of net sales to top the list. Of course on a quiet day that might be as low as 500, while on the day a new pro bundle (particularly a female one) is released, you would might need 2-3K or more to beat that. As I said, it was a very rough guess based on very limited data.
I'm curious, will that police car take Subd without falling apart? That's my big problem with a lot of older content... IF it will tolerate Subd, it can spruce up nicely.
I doubt that, if it was based on # sold, the PC+ items would likely to be top. I think L'Adair's guess is closer to the truth, ie top list is people related, and the bottom is more thing related, though there seems to some exceptions to this (eg top list also contains software programs, shaders etc).
Looking now...
Okay, some of the angles (like the front end, most body panel edges, etc) just tighten up, whole the window corners round ever so slightly.
The low res underbody showed little to no change on first glance.
The hi-res underbody showed some significant rounding of the engine, especially underneath. This is the worst that happens to the entire set.
The interior showed little to no change.
The lightbar rounds the bottom "feet" just a little too much, and it no longer fits the roof, but has little other change (and sub-d may not even be needed for this)
Have you tried changing the SubD algorithm from Catmark to Loop or Binary in the Subdiv section of the Parameters tab? It's how I can usually get rid of the things you describe.
As a quick test - it converts to sub-d just fine. Both 1 and 2 levels look ok.
Doors open, hood/bonnet opens (though not the trunk/boot), and the other parts (hi-res undercarriage, interior, light-bar) also convert fine. (no render right now - getting ready for work ;)
Edit: still doesn't look modern up close, but it's ok - body, lights, glass, chrome, wheels, tires, wheel wells, and a whole bunch of other stuff are separate material zones, making it easier to re-surface with shaders. The headlights are still the weak point, looking more flush against the surface. Perhaps adding a prop / morphing the mesh slightly could help there.
Also, if you use iray, you can set Round Corners Radius in the surface tab to above 0 (0.001 is where to start), which gives a nice pseudo-bevel to edges. Switch off Across Materials if you don't want polys with different materials, that intersect or touch, to look like they're molded together. It's a much ignored feature of iray that can make simple objects look more detailed with no hit on rendering.
Good tips, thanks!
Two biggest barriers to older stuff is subd and badly laid out material zones. Looks like this holds up, Valandar!
Not to take away from a product, but if anyone wants a newer police car, there are free ones at dmi-3d.net, most in .LWO format, which are easy to convert with many apps including cararra (I use Ultimate Unwrap 3D). Will take a few minutes setting it up and applying Iray shaders, but it's worth the effort..
here is an IRAY test of the CHP camaro they have
Yes, they have some really nice cars there. However, not all have interiors (last I looked most don't), it would require rigging from scratch IF they have opening doors, etc (not all do), and the conversion factor itself might scare newer users away from them.
very true Valandar. I have d/led some that were so detailed they choked 3DSMax, not an easy task and others that were basically shells for textures. But there are some gems there and it's a good experience for users that want to learn more than the plug and play aspect of premade content.
So, hey, not the highest resolution car, but at medium or longer ranges, pretty swell! And I like the interior detail.
Also looking at the license, its for "private use" only. So thats a pretty big deal to most people I think, I won't use anything thats not for commercial use. Too much hassle.
