This is a just drag and drop, and uses the monumental add on.  I just dragged the building in, threw two dragons in it rotated the dome to get the light where I wanted it and hit render.  took 2 minutes to set up and about 30 minutes to render to 85%.  I have to work all day tomorrow so I didn't really have time to do anything else but this is going to be very very useful.  good to know that Iradience will work in it as well.

I'll note that if you aren't trying to do fancy two-tone terrain shading, using it in 3DL is actually very simple.

And I'm currently fineagling something using essentially two copies of the terrain with slight scaling mods to create elevation stuff.

Something I threw together, G2M, Low-rez donkey and a few Predatron plants. I had to turn off the limits on the morph dials to get the canyon so deep. I7, 980Ti, 32G-3200 RAM, 12minutes for 2000 iterations.

  • I bought it and im really impressed with it. Unfortunately, it totally outclasses my video card and I dont think im really going to be able to use it untill I upgrade. The first time I tried a preview render I accidentally left the preview light on... my computer was not happy, had to task manager quit it.

Ill keep it because it seems like it will eventually be incredibly fun.

Daz, maybe you should start posting hardware recommendations with your products. It wouldnt hurt.

So does this work in 4.8? I have loaded 4 scenes and DS crashes each time I try to render

Terradome 3 works with Simtenero Randomizer. I could run the randomizer script on Azone right off. It wouldn't run on Bzone until I unparented it from Azone, but then you can parent it right back. I also found the morph groups in the script window were checked but the morphs themselves were unchecked - had to uncheck and recheck the morph groups (or you can just click on each morph to select it). Here's the Mountain Lake preset before and after randomizing.

Im using 4.8. I wonder if the perf hit is 4.8 related. I can render a basic scene without the atmosphere model. Im certain that if I add a G3 to that scene itll be crash city.

Actually, check that. I dont know that ive tried an actual render. I may have just attempted preview renders.

I have 4.9 & 4.9 Beta installed - In the Beta every scene I open crashes almost straight away, If I start my own scene it crashes if I try to render it -

In the normal 4.9 the same things render without a problem on the GPU (970) to so I know its not a memory problem.

So, for what it's worth, I think it's totally worth using for 3DL. I have stuff in the works to show it off, but basically if you want to do fancy layers/elevations/etc, a good start is Let it Snow, or you can use geoshells/copies with scale and position shifted a little to have overlapping layers.

One tip for making the edge between stuff look more complex is giving one zone a small scale displacement pattern (pushing the border back and forth rather than a smooth curve).

This looks like a great product!! But I do have a question or two to set my expectations, and help make the decision to purchase or not.

I'm guessing based on what I've seen that since TerraDome 3 uses tiled textures, and is basically a moprhed plane(S) that it currently does not do elevation based shaders to simular strata like Vue can (see image below by Neoh74 for reference).

Any info, and possible solutions would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

First experiment. Ok, it could be better... I'll probably pick up that Stonemason shader to see if I can improve it. The problem with the geoshell approach is that, ultimately, it's a sharp division between one and the next.

That said, in many cases that's going to be acceptable. Among other things, if you have time to play with it, you can make Opacity masks and carefully set zones with fuzzy edges. At that point you'll probably want to make a bunch of different geoshells.

So, for example, you might have one geoshell for the main peak, a fuzzy blob that you carefully position at the right place. Then you make another one for the second peak.

(note that, as far as I know of, only AoA Subsurface shader has tile offset, which you'd probably want for this.)

Wouldn't a deformer work well for morphing hills and dips in the terrain?

It should work but it would be a bit fiddly. You can edit the falloff curve but this is applied symetrically around the deformer so to get any sort of asymetric shape you'd need to use multiple overlapping deformers.

Actually it is quite easy to make asymmetrical deformer morphs since weight map control was added.  I did this quickly on a simple primitive plane as an example. This is a single deformer which I modified with the weight map.

These are all extremely nice, but I question the usability of them beyond creating beautiful scenic panoramas. And considering that most DS users are into portriats and close-up scenes, it is hard for me to imagine how I could actually get the best out of this wonderful product apart from backgrounds for my character scenes where the expansivness would be cropped off and wasted. I guess it's up to me to be more innovatave in working out how I can actually use this great product's full potential in my artwork.

Are there any regular night skies in the works for TD3? I know theres the Southern Skies set, but I mean regular starry nights with regular clouds and moon, etc? I was saddened to see that there didnt appear to be a default night sky with the base or in the hdri expansion.

Southern Skies does include three starry night skies that are seperate from the auroras but they don't have clouds or a Moon. I think the Moon is going to be sold seperatly as an object you can add to the scene using any sky.

I fiddled about with Gareee's old Glow Moon yesterday turned it Emissive got passable results.

The render I posted was done in 4.8, CPU only.

Guess, I am out of luck. I have GTX670 with 2GB of VRAM and 32GB RAM in the computer.

When I tried to render a demo scene (Phone home), first the graphics driver has crashed

and after that Daz Studio started to flash different windows (rendering one and the interface).

I have never seen such a behaviour before. This set is a real monster (at least for my computer).

I will buy a new graphic card (possible GTX1080), but I am just waiting for Nvidia to fix the iray to work on it.

Just to update Jaki...it does slow down when I start to add stuff in. Your system sounds about the same as mine.

Any suggestions for the best way to preview the scene? If I use the Nvidia setting it slows it down some...I've been using the preview light but I'm wondering if I'm missing a better way. Also is there an easier way to move around to change the view? I notice that there are a few camera presets...is that the best way to move around?

Well, if you have a spare $800, I'd give it a whirl!

I'll be trying in Blender; the cost is kinda high, although I could get a student discount atm.

My first try. Not... the fanciest, and the trees I populated with Ultrascatter ended up pretty much invisible. Ah well. ;)

The water and clouds use the WTP shaders I'm working on, but I love the TD3 terrain shaders. Man. Good stuff.

Nice job. Always amazes me what you do in 3Delight; I always sucked at it.

Consider Lyndsey's post above yours; imagine putting that in a large picture frame; it then goes on the 'wall' behind your character. :) It stops being a scene, and instead becomes a landscape.

My first render with TerraDome. Nothing fancy, just mixed some morphs together and added the viking boat.

Done in 4.8 and took about an hour to render.

Well if I want my characters close up so I can actually see them interacting, would't that mean that most of the panorama would be cropped off in the close up. I can see it being useful in distant shots that encompass a wide view of the "story", but most narrative scenes are done framed in on the protagonists and not from wide shots.

The geometry tools in TD3 look GREAT. Atmosphere & water to. Real quick to work with to get something good but I wonder what kinds of results we could get using it with Quixel's Megascans Studio? Or if they could even work togeather?

As far as I know it should be fine in 4.8

Can you try not using the scenes, and instead bring in an Azone and try to work with that?
We had some issues with Prop Subsets and the beta, and I am thinking maybe it effects 4.8 as well?

  • @Peter Wade and @HorusRa,

The Moon....TerraLuna3....it WILL be along very shortly. It was all finished and ready to be submitted, and then we thought of something else for it, and ended up just about doubling the included content. Needless to say, that threw a spanner in the works for our neatly planned schedule. It's progressing along as fast as humanly possible, because for all three versions of TerraDome, TerraLuna has been an integral and essential add-on. For anyone who has used previous TerraLuna's, we think you will be very pleased with the bound of evolution it has taken this time. Our sincere apologies for the delay, but once we'd thought of the other stuff, submitting it without would have seemed like a job half done.

  • Yeah Andy showed me a mock up of a Daytime moon........and we needed to make that happen...... IT'S HIS FAULT :P

(Well ok, I guess it's my fault.....)
