I'm sure Daz id doing everything they can to identify and remove this spam and in reality they're really not much a problem - they're very obvious and you just scroll past them and/or report them.

Although there are six mods on the web team I'm sure there's lots of other Daz stuff they have to attend to apart from monitoring the pages. I can only guess about what other duties they have on their plate so I'm not about to tell them they're not doing their job proberly.

Norris: Are you attempting to tell me my duties, sir?

Philip Marlowe: No, just having fun trying to guess what they are.

If it's bots, a good captcha should keep them out.

CAPTCHA? That terrible thing which refuses entry even after the 29th try? Please not....! surprise

One way would be to deny a new member posting rights until their account has been approved by a mod and shut off any guest accounts that are allowed to post.

  • looks like you took out the latest though they'll probably start posting as comments in other threads and on our renders like sometimes happens on other sites, they can be clever too this way as some start out acting like a normal member commenting normally then start spamming after short time

Yes, those things happen - we are aware of the tricks and catch quite a few that way too.

At least these stand out... over at the Filter Forge forums for long while they were getting hit by spammers that apparently could actually read or at least figure out what the site was about, they would title the thread something like "Great new Photoshop tekneek" (didn't say they could spell) or something innocuous like that, but when you clicked on the thread it was a cut and paste of some sports or news article... If you were to follow it to the bottom, there would be the actually spam message (in bad Engrish), which was for counterfeit designer sportswear or fake university diplomas... The sportswear bit is an old one, mostly Chinese, anyone who falls for it gets their credit card info stolen and nothing in return... Which I suppose is poetic justice. Based on the similarities in the technique I think (at least in the case of the FF spammers), that both scams (sportswear and fake diplomas) were by the same group and mostly likely the poor idiots who try to get a fake diploma get ripped off and end up with nothing either... These scams prey on the fact that most people know they are breaking some laws, so they don't report it.

Today is actually the first time I have seen any of these spam threads, so it seems like a good idea to give another shout out to our amazing team of forum mods. In fact, every 20 minutes or so is probably a good time to give a shout out to our amazing forum mods. You are all rock stars!

I had just posted my first picture ever to the forum and when it returned me to the Commons, I saw three of those threads for the first time. I thought...."Holy cr*p! What did I do?" I corrupted something. Hope they don't know it was me.

If there was a CAPTCHA added, in all likelihood, it would only impact new registrants...so all those who are already members wouldn't have to worry about it.

The way these posts seem to run, there may be a real person setting up the new account and then firing up the posting bot while he creates another new account. So captchas wouldn't work.

The (current) best bet still looks to be filtering on Korean characters in the subject or body of the post.

  • McGyverMcGyver Posts: 7,085

They seem to have moved on from fake university scams to vibrators and "business trip massage exodus"...  With happy ending? There are happy faces amongst the characters, so I'm assuming it's not sad ending.

  • There are ways to stop it entirely, and I did use them on one site I was maintaining for a guy e few years back, but I was using different software for that one.

Yep, exactly. I was one of the four.  EDIT: You can also email the mods group directly without clicking on the link- is it okay to post that email? I'll let the mods do that if they want to.

It should be noted that when they're flagged they are removed very quickly. So I'd suggest that rather than ignoring them, like I used to do, we all flag them as soon as they appear and let the mods know as quickly as possible.

Edit - As I speak some more spam appears. Never fear...... here come the mods.

Mod is a subculture that began in 1960s Britain. Elements of the mod subculture include tailor-made suits, motor scooters and amphetamine-fuelled all-night dance clubs. I think I'm showing my age.

Oh for god's sake, another one! I'll email the mods.

Please just report and one report per batch so report emails don't sound like a maniacal arcade going off.  :)  Thanks.

If you don't see us removing spam, it means the mods are afk.  While we do our best to cover the 24 hours in a day, it's not always going to happen.  Flagging is good, but one will do the same as ten and ten only makes my machine go ping, ping, ping, ping, ping, ping, ping, ping, ping, ping, ping, usually in quick succession.  Liken that to a hotel clerk's bell being struck numerous times to get the clerk's attention.  Especially since we're usually already removing the spam when the pings start chiming in. :)

Out of curiousity I checked out one of the spam sites a few days ago. It was just a godaddy parked domain with no content.

even with the new captcha thingy that i've noticed when i created a thread, they are still getting through. LOL. Man, they're busy.

I got it right fortunately on my iPad

Jaki, where did you see this?  I just tried a new thread with no captcha.

  • ChoholeChohole Posts: 33,604

Can I endorse what Cris has already said.  We do not need emails to the Mods,  We do already all get emails for the flagged posts.
Yesterdays count of Spammers is over 70 individuals and still rising, with only around a third of them generating reports,   so We are on the ball as far as we can be with the sheer volume of spam we are plagued with.

Should we assume if there's a couple views that it has been flagged, and after a couple hours flag it if it's still there? Is that enough leeway time?
