We did tell the web guys that it wasn't hindering the spammers. Benjam was remarkably restrained with his reaction.

I'm not surprised - a bot can easily be configured to check a checkbox automatically. You can do tons of weird stuff with a little programming. So the current solution is not worth much, whether it's humans or bots.

But maybe if they set it to show the pictures from the start it might help - to my knowledge that's not something the bots can handle yet. If nothing else it might reveal if there are humans involved.

That's actually Google's new captcha, that is supposed to tell the difference between bots and humans based on certain behaviour on the page, not just the checkbox itself. If it thinks you are human, then it's only the checkbox; if it thinks you might not be a human, then you get the pictures.

I always get the pictures. Maybe it's because I don't use Google, and it doesn't like that.

And last night I saw two posts each from six different IDs - so quite probably a single person posting without a bot.

I think the initial two posts are people...and if they are left around for any amount of time it is then turned over to a bot.  Because after a couple of hours (from what I've seen about 2 hrs) the number of posts from a particular ID can suddenly hit double digits in less than 10 minutes.

That makes a certain amount of sense - no point in turning the bot loose on a thread that is about to go away. They've got to be doing this for money - it's the only explanation that makes any sense to me. (Sense? Its the internet, don't need to make no sense! :-) )

A simpler approach would be to queue the posts from new registrants for a manual review by admins before they appear in the forums. A threshold can be defined based upon the number of approved posts or days of registrations before they are allowed to post freely like others.

That's what Ati  also suggested.  I can assure you that our web guys are trawling through all the ideas that they have, and they have had quite a few, including that one.  It's finding a solution that doesn't  impact to much on genuine forum members and Store customers, and yet is effective at curbing this blot on the landscape.

Does that mean they've eliminated an orbital nuclear strike?

Actually, if those spammers are the same group that hits the NaNoWriMo forums almost daily the whole thing is a script, including the initital posts. You're right about how it works though. The script makes the initial post(s) and then checks they're still present before starting the real spam run.

It was probably more politic to type Asian, rather than Korean and  sometimes Japanese.  I can assure you that, after the floods and avalanches we have suffered from this Botnet,  weird was a very laid back term.

The comment actually referred to the weird rash of spam rather than inferring that Asian script was weird.  They were arrinving by the bucketload.   You should see how many reports I have in my email report folder,  and only a small fraction of them were actually reported. Yesterday during the day (UK time) they were posting around 30 an hour, the previous evening and night was even worse.

This is the first day for several weeks that it has actually been a pleasure for a moderator to come in and check the forums.

If modelator do not care use "Asian"  in this topic, I suggest clear discribe , it is "Korean".  or there is no meaning to meniton Asian.

I can not beleive,, even though there are many country discribed as EU,  each man hope to be  gathered as European,,

about bad things. eg Bad European, strange European,,etc.

If I find wired japanese post, and you say so, I feel no problem. the problem I feel, Using  "Asian " and gathered them one.

if you separate as Asian , European,, please separate each country, or not separate.

I think (I hope) that as Chohole says it was the posts, not the character set, that were seen as weird though I do understand how the phrase could be read the other way. With luck the thread will not have any further occasion to bob up.

It was indeed the posts that were seen as weird. I did not wish to offend anyone, but used it as a generic term for the type of character set that was used.

  • kitakoredazkitakoredaz Posts: 3,526

I know , you have no intention to offend anyone . but I think, you may better, not to  use "Asian"  about this topic.

maybe you are not Asian, are you?   then you do not feel any problem, but I am japanese and Asian, then feel it is problem

to use "Asian" about spam topic.

if you do not know, which Asian  character are used in those spam, , it is Hangle.  but it can not be any evidence, these spam are send by Korean.

if it is japanese, chinese, or indie,,but  no one can not confirm, it is Asian.spam too.

  • kitakoredazkitakoredaz Posts: 3,526

I understand, the post is wired, but  no need to add  Asian.  because many Asian  not use hangle.

please remember,, there seems not many Asian who said so in this forum.  yes they know manner.

but I do not think,  when Asian new user see this topic,  they feel DAZ forum is open to the Asian as true meaning.

Aesop's Fable about a man his son and a donkey

A MAN and his son were once going with their Donkey to market. As they were walking along by its side a countryman passed them and said: “You fools, what is a Donkey for but to ride upon?”

      1
So the Man put the Boy on the Donkey and they went on their way. But soon they passed a group of men, one of whom said: “See that lazy youngster, he lets his father walk while he rides.”   2
So the Man ordered his Boy to get off, and got on himself. But they hadn’t gone far when they passed two women, one of whom said to the other: “Shame on that lazy lout to let his poor little son trudge along.”   3
Well, the Man didn’t know what to do, but at last he took his Boy up before him on the Donkey. By this time they had come to the town, and the passers-by began to jeer and point at them. The Man stopped and asked what they were scoffing at. The men said: “Aren’t you ashamed of yourself for overloading that poor Donkey of yours—you and your hulking son?”   4
The Man and Boy got off and tried to think what to do. They thought and they thought, till at last they cut down a pole, tied the Donkey’s feet to it, and raised the pole and the Donkey to their shoulders. They went along amid the laughter of all who met them till they came to Market Bridge, when the Donkey, getting one of his feet loose, kicked out and caused the Boy to drop his end of the pole. In the struggle the Donkey fell over the bridge, and his fore-feet being tied together he was drowned.   5
“That will teach you,” said an old man who had followed them:
Moral of story: “PLEASE ALL, AND YOU WILL PLEASE NONE.”

What is problem to remove "Asian" word  from these  spam  topic ?    smiley

Man and Boy never worry what is best   because,  there is no man, who will  complain, if OP or modelator remove "Asian" from this topic.   it is really easy. or European compalin ?  you want to use "Asian"  even though you already know it is "hangle" ?

    @kitakoredaz

If I put up spam on a Japanese board would someone complain about the English spam on the board? But I'm not English nor do I see myself as European but I wouldn't have a problem either way as it is a cultural phrase not a derogatory one.

Kitakeredaz, basicaly your making it a lose lose situation. If they change it to hangul then it is pointing a finger at a single county which is not good form either. If you want to suggest a general term for that quarter of the world that does not point fingers at any single country then go for it. I would love to hear what actually is acceptable for that huge portion of the world these days. It seems I can't keep up with all the words we can't use any more if Asian is out as well.

Personally I object to use of the adjective "Western" in foreign press because it lumps me in with some countries I would rather not be associated with.  But I would never presume to interpret, much less correct on a forum that is not in my native language, exact meanings of short headlines.  Headlines are prone to misinterpretations even by native speakers.  Reading the article usually clears up the misinterpretations.  Making mountains out of mole hills, is often what happens in cases of bent noses.

My ancestors were Russian. I often see derogatory remarks about Russians on line. Doesn't bother me. Even when insults are aimed directly at me I really don't care. But I've changed the title anyway, because Daz sent me an email asking me to, and I aim to please.

If these forums were being spammed in Cyrillic, and someone posted a question about "weird Russian posts", I doubt if anyone would be offended. But then, Russians have thick skins. It's those damned Russian winters...
