Great that it works for you. That does not work with my system unfortunately. I manually download each product, unzip it, reorganize it, most of the time I have to make better icons and tooltip icons, then rezip it for my personal backup archive. If I need to update it, i know what to allow to override, and what not to. I customise prettymuch everything before it even makes it to my library. If I use connect or even DIM it will mess stuff up everytime it does an update.
Doesn't seem to be the case.
Shortcuts are not manually organizing content. They are shortcuts which are only as good as the originating files. Our manual files can be used on any version of DS (mostly) and are safe from future updates that could/will probably (if history has shown us anything) break the originating files or locations. All We have to worry about is hard drive crashes and most of us have numerous back-ups so that really isn't a concern.
For those people who will not accept DRM under any circumstances on principle (which I can respect), there is nothing Daz can offer short of dropping DRM completely, which Daz is not willing to do without trying it. For those who have problems with it but are willing to accept it under certain circumstances, Daz has tried to offer concessions which hopefully address their issues. Saying that Daz has not heard because they haven't abandoned DRM completely is not a fair assessment, any more than saying those who will not accept DRM under any circumstances as a matter of principle are not listening because they won't give it a try and see how it works.
..+1.
..yeah been there too. Aiko 3 in the Mech Girl costume in getting out of the AM Limo to face off with the Mil Dragon that was chasing her.down the streets of Dystopia.
Crikey my lighting was terrible in that one and I knew nothing about the difference between Poser and Daz materials so all the windows looked all wrong . Fortunately it is now on a dead HDD.
They've tried to addess some issues; I have no problem with admitting that.
Some of those that dislike DRM do because of personal experience (how many I've not idea - obviously.); Daz has only done one thing to address the various issues, and it appears to be a decent attempt at compromise. Unfortuneately EULA can be amended and hypethetical future owners could take steps. The other issues Daz can't just stop DRM withoug evidence it will cost more than pre 4.9; the expedicture and commitment can't allow that. So it has to be tried, and who knows, it might on balance be an improvement for them.
DRM is a feature that offers nothing tangible in the way of benefit to me the customer, or indeed to any customer. Experience again suggests that any benefits that Daz experiences will not be shared with customers. Companies just don't do that unless it is part of some marketing strategy. So at best, any possible benefit, is in some undetermined future.
So yes, there is nothing Daz can offer - except considerably cheaper prices for DRM products. As others have posted. When you (Daz) control the duration I can use the product for, and the circumstances under which I can use it, the products need to reflect that price.
Would I personally pay for DRMed items? Not at any price you could rent and still make a profit, I am sure?
I once said I would get DRM items for 95% off, but I changed my mind last week after some hoopla or another. It still looks like support. I need my content to always work, anytime I want. I'm a artist, I don't have time for no stinking approvals
Once they fix the content library I'll see what others have to say about it before I dive in to 4.9. Sticking with 4.8.
...I still have not DL'd the encrypted freebies, as a matter of fact I have not even installed 4.9 yet.
Actually, I don't recall hearing that they'd be willing to drop it ever. I always got the sense that it was going to be imposed and the only thing being decided was to what degree. I'm not planning on ever purchasing DRMed content, but I was pretty much just hoping they'd at least relent enough to say that if the results are bad enough that they'd at least consider the possibility of giving up on it. (Admittedly, 'bad enough' is as hard to know from outside as what they would consider success with this but I would like to know if DRM is set in stone or not.) I can understand and accept that it might not be now, it might not be the near future since it takes time to see how the impact on sales and piracy and all that really is. Doesn't change much for me, there's already whole sections of products I don't generally buy. I didn't even touch G3 stuff till the recent super discount on V7.
I actually don't mind that they haven't done anything yet. I had no illusions they would.
But this all lays the groundwork for, hopefully, explaining why things don't go well, and hopefully if/when things go badly, they will be willing to suck it up and just drop it. My big concern is groupthink, or that given the bad decisions leading up to doing this, more bad decisions will keep it.
what encrypted freebies? Or do you mean the pay so much and get these free items? I do think they should release a truly free item. While I understand there's some risk involved, it would at least let those with technical based objections see what they're dealing with. Hearing from others that things work fine doesn't tell people what they'd encounter on their own systems.
Even if they would consider that, they couldn't say it; it would be irresponsible of them to state such a thing.
I've tried 4.9 again; I didn't install the sql stuff, and have Daz blocked through the firewall.
Here is the solution, add a 10-20% price increase to every product, drop the DRM and use the added 10-20% to fund an anti piracy task force with 2 mandates, one is a group that singles out all illegal file sharing torrent sites and physically shuts them down and throws the owners in a deep dark hole forever. The second group would work with hackers to single out users online that seed the torrent sites and file sharing forums and also users that d/l from them and "compromise" their devices to stop any activity from these low lifes. There you go a win-win for both DAZ and the users, plus every other digital company that suffers from piracy will want DAZ to do the same for their content thus increasing DAZ revenue in the process
I'd consider that.
That is another thing which bothers me a great deal: the "sudden" and unilateral imposition of this change at DAZ. Any change can be implemented at any time by DAZ, and I don't want to be a slave to a whim.
I believe it is a matter of trust in their customers on the part of DAZ, but it is also a matter, a very serious matter, of the trust we customers place in DAZ, and that trust has been very greatly damaged. Would a legal argument look at the custom of trade between the seller and the customer, and reasonable expectations by the customer, based on past experience....... ? I hope it does not come to a real-life legal matter.
It appears from what I have read that new items, and older items as time unfolds, will be encrypted.......
What about the content that so many of us use in Poser ????????????????????
G2 items were supposed to be be used in Poser.... that is how it was presented to us as a real world option. This is no longer possible for encrypted DAZ products.
I have invested thousands of dollars in buying DAZ items because they could be also used in Poser.
I cannot puruse the threads and topics here always, so I don't know if this has been addressed, but I have not read anything about it so far.
Has anyone read any response to this issue? If not, will DAZ please answer this concern.
I have bought some encrypted items here, before I read about the concerns. I will probably not return them. But because of the possibility that all DAZ items might someday be encrypted, I am going to be very careful about buying here from this point on.
Win-win ignoring the lengthy prison sentences likely to be handed down for Daz and its associates, anyway.
IANAL, but the solutions in the first post appear to me to protect the customer from Daz changing its policies on a whim and refusing to allow customers to use their content. And no one has said anything about encrypting past items -- Daz has said items which are currently available unencrypted would not become encrypted (and there's no reason for doing so, since the unencrypted veersions are already out there).
*Shrug* Pity delivering a Batmanesque beating to some of these people would get more action from the authorities in their countries than the much more massive illegal operations that they are running.
I had heard other industry groups had discussed putting up fake and harmful versions of software on sharing sites, but obviously then it becomes a question about the ethics of deliberately spreading malware even with good intentions. Though personally I'd regard the complaints of the victims like the story about the drug dealer who goes to the police to report that someone stole his illegal drugs. At least the old .exe installers meant anyone getting one off a pirate site ran a chance of getting a bad case of malware.
I always agree with that, Mike. You and many others here have been a great help to me and taught me a lot.
R
What you can always depend on is action and reacftion.
The bad guys will break the code, and the stolen Daz item will be sold unencrypted on the bad-guys retail site. This might be even more harm in the long run.
Oh..... and what about the Poser users?
I dunno, lots of people have gotten bad cases of malware without being criminals. Remember when the Polipos virus was making the rounds? No pirated stuff on my machine, but I got it all the same and I'm sure I'm not the only one did while using p2p/torrent software only for perfectly legal things, such as indie films and music and other public domain stuff. Computer viruses, like biological ones, do not discriminate when it comes to spreading infections, with the result being that innocent parties are stricken along with the guilty.
Well,,,Poser belongs to Smithmicro. Daz really doesn't have much say in what happens to that program. Smithmicro could pull Poser off the shelf tomorrow and there would be nothing Daz could do about it.
I remember a rumor for a game I develop commercial content for. Another payware company developed a massive commercial global mod for the game. After it was released, they then released an update with fixes. In the update was also a checker to make sure the copy of the mod was licensed to the user which bought the mod as was the case upon initial install of the mod. If the license did not match, the update erased all evidence of the mod in the game. The company never acknowledged or denied this publicly, but there were quite a forum forum users wondering why their mod dissapeared and it was sooooooooooooooooo gratifying to see other forums users give these users a very hard time since this singled them out as getting the mod from non legit means
They originally were going to encrypt everything (via DAZ Connect that is), and whilst they changed their mind on that, it is that original intent that makes some users uneasy as to what they would have really done if no one had complained.
Really good point.
I think part of what is bothering me is that I have always been treated really decently and fairly by the good folks at DAZ.
And then, out of the blue, this DRM thing lands on the house. Now, I think the DAZ folks are trying to help their vendors. There is no nefarious scheme to hurt customers.
However, DRM just does not work, and will make things much more difficult for the customers.
When I buy an item, I want to be left alone to work with it, in DS or Poser....... and I still have heard nothing about Poser users.
:nods: Right about now somebody is probably going: "Poser users? We still have those around here?" Yes, Daz, you do. What about us? We'd like to buy the things you have that would otherwise work for us, like new G2 goodies you might be releasing for instance. But no can do if they're gonna be encrypted and/or Connect only from now on.
I keep imagining the original post as:
'Good news, everyone! We listened to you, and are now doing exactly what we were doing before!'
/Farnsworth
I can't really remember which of the multitude of 20+ page topics it was in, but one of the DAZ_people stated that there weren't very many Poser users according to a poll they did.
Heard that one before, guess they don't want my money.
Poll or no poll Daz has been moving away from Poser support for a long time
