Mec4D is well experienced in Iray, Daz Studio, and suitable hardware.

just read Mec's latest comment that she might prefer 2X 1080's over her Titan X as it gives her more rendering power about 40% that's why I thought 4x 1080's would be render powerhouse so many pros and cons on those two builds deciding on

As I noted before.....a 1080 GTX is (at stock speed) faster than a Titan-X.  It also overclocks MUCH better, and consumes a lot less power.  4x 1080 GTXs would blow away 4x Titan-Xs, even at stock 1080 speed.

Even the 1070 GTX (MSRP of $379) has almost the same performance as a Titan-X at stock speed.  With overclocking, the 1070 GTX can actually slightly beat a Titan-X.  This is based on the supposed core count, which is NOT certain yet.  (preliminary charts indicated the 1070 GTX would have 2048 CUDA cores, and the 1080 GTX would have 2560.  Both supposedly run at 1600MHz stock speed core clock and both have 8GB VRAM, though the 1080 GTX uses GDDR5X with twice the bandwidth of the GDDR5 the 1070 GTX uses.)

I'd try to wait until the 1070 GTX has been released (June 10th) as at that point the 1080 GTX will have been out for two weeks, and we'll be seeing some early adopters posting benchmarks and reporting any bugs with the drivers.

I just like to create what I envision in my head and I keep wanting to do bigger and bigger scenes with a lot in them as well as detail.

This is where you need to think. The GTX1080 has 8GB of VRAM. No matter how fast a card it is, and no matter how many of them you have working together for even more speed, you'll still only ever have 8GB of working space.

It may pay you to wait until the launch of the high level Pascal cards later in the year.

I decided to swap the extra vram and cores of the titan for the clock speed and power consumption of the 1080. I'm hoping at some point in the near future there will be a ti or titan equivalent of the 1080. If the titan equivalent had 16gb or more of vram with pascall performance, that would probably best facilitate rendering of large scenes quickly. If my scene is under 8gb I have the benefits of two cards albeit with issues as described by mec4d. Of course it doesn't help when I actually have very little idea what I'm talking about and I guess nvidea has to come to the party with driver and iray development. I'll be cpu rendering in 3delight until the 1080 arrives. I guess it depends what your budget allows for but in the end just the price of the 1080 was enough to sway me. (Apologies o wise one with big stick if this is considered a double post. I'm a confused delinquent and there's three of me).

thought you'd be interested in this and seems to confirm what you said about having more than 2 1080's in sli doesn't make sense to me why if you have 3 or 4 1080's in sli you have to contact nvidia to ask for a code to unlock them so you can use them it's under the section Three-way SLI? You'll need a code for that  http://arstechnica.co.uk/gadgets/2016/05/nvidia-gtx-1080-review/

just watched this review covers a fair bit and also talks about the more than one card options and how nvidia themselves say it's not a good idea for more than 2 1080's in sli which is kinda interesting really you'd think they'd say yes to sli 4 1080s as it's more money to them

oooo going back to those builds I was talking about the chronus 32gb memory 2 titans and 4 drives  (refound that version) verses the genesis with 64gb 2tb ssd + 2tbhdd and 2 1080's (and from what others said 2 1080's be better than 4 titans in many ways) the genesis is the cheaper and it has lot of upgradability so looks like I'm getting closer to my diciding. Just want to say thank you btw me not knowing much about this sort of thing you are all helping me in making the right choices cause otherwise I'd probably waste my money buying a product on the basis of thinking more is better in # of graphic cards in other words 4 cards instead of 2

of course the chronus also has an option of 2 1080s as well which of course than makes that a lot cheaper roughly 1500 less than gen but gen has that 64 gb memory and higher power and fans and upgradeable so now to narrow gap further between these two pcs got to see 2 titans vs 2 1080s  1 1080 looks like beating in titan in speed, cooling and pixal quality but titan is 12 gb vs 8 of 1080 and more cuda cores but in 2x sli which of the two gets the most out of its two cards

Remember that Nvidia explicitly says to NOT use SLI when rendering with Itay - SLI is more for gaming.

That may be all true but for games and Open GL , there is no claim in the world that indicate yet that Gtx 1080 render waster in iray than 1x Titan X .. all just speculations as nobody tested it yet . and all people claim it are the people that sell it . Think twice

When you overclock 1080 it will use 250 W just as TitanX so nothinng MUCH  better and not use less power at all .

There are going be better and faster GTX 1080 soon compared to the stock , as it was with the new Titan X

There's a review of the 1080 in regards to gaming here: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-review/1100-6439863/

It actually has less CUDA cores than the 980ti or Titan. I think it's a great card if you're coming from a 980 or below, but for people like Cath (with two Titans, haha) or myself (with a 980ti), it's not anything to rush out and buy.

I'm hoping it drives down prices, more than anything.
  • MEC4DMEC4D Posts: 5,249

That's the point, and the clock speed did not affected much rendering in iray so 1200Mhz or 1500Mhz per GPU did nothing to rendering speed it just improved real time viewport

so if the card is slower in reality than 980ti or Titan X in rendering with iray, you gonna waste your good card efficiency you already have  and speed here the electric meter only for nothing .

I need one more card for texturing but I wait until EVGA come with super clocked version and water cooling ..  and then I will see how it affect everything , if is slower I keep it only for texturing and monitors, if is faster I am gonna get second one for match and finalize my iray rig but all at this moment is only [ IF ] as nobody knows the answer until May 27 or better say May 31 when the orders arrive but not my order I am waiting for SC and better one , if not  EVGA you better give me my money ..

I don't care about the Game benchmarks  it means nothing and have nothing to do wih rendering in iray

If that was all true you should see Titan X dropping the price next week to $800 other wise total BS , I wish they do I will snap one more for the collection and forget about 1080

well for me when it comes to gaming I'm a console gamer and only few games play on pc really got warhammer total war ordered and those types don't need over clocking fast cards and bell and whistles other gamers get excited over like graphics high thou of course so really for me with cards want best option for daz iray and other 3d creation programs, photo editing and video. Still like the idea of more than one card though and my budget allows 2 titans glad now I didn't rush out with this and go 3 or 4 card options which I would have if you all hadn't informed me it was a waste saved a lot there so it's down to two titans vs 2 1080s and which has the more benifits for iray and 3d progs hopefully we get some coparrisons soon on these not just from hard core gamers like sickleyeild said to me a high end gaming setup with multible cards may be great for hard core gaming but that same setup is no good for 3d rendering/creation and like a noob that is something I wouldn't have known

My plan at this stage is to get a 1080 when it becomes available or soon after .That will let me get started with Iray with some pretty reasonable resources.  I'm hoping that in the next 12 to 18 months the 1080 will have something like a Ti or even a Titan version with more vram than the stock 1080. The reason I wanted a Titan was for the close to 12gb of scene I could load onto it. If upgraded versions of the 1080 have even more than 12gb vram I would want to double up the 8gb 1080 with one of those instead. I could later replace the 8gb 1080 with another one of those for the extra cores on those big scenes. In my build I've given myself 64gb of cpu ram to fall back on and it's upgradeable to 128gb. I love 3delight and 64gb should make that much more enjoyable. Thanks for the questions you've asked on your own build angelreaper, it's turned up a lot of information that has been really helpful to me. The PC I've got coming should last me a few years before new developments and performance issues demand an upgrade. Just in case I've got this all wrong I'll really appreciate someome setting me straight. :) Cheers.

Oh I agree Cath, I'm not arguing with you. I'd like to add a Titan as my primary card too (for the RAM) and I only linked to that Gamespot review because it gives some stats and performance measurements against similar cards. It barely edges out the 980ti in most tests, but more importantly, has less CUDA cores. Like I said, it sounds like a very good card if you're going to upgrading from a low-end one.

Angelreaper and 3Deliquent: that's correct. SLI (using multiple identical cards) is only useful for gaming. It's actually recommended you disable SLI for Iray rendering. What's most important are CUDA cores and the RAM (because the RAM determines how much stuff you can use in a scene). I have never run out of RAM in any of my scenes, but of course it's good to have as much RAM as possible. RAM *does not* stack with multiple cards either when it comes to Iray rendering, so two 6GB cards will still only give you 6GB of RAM to work with. This is why Titans (with 12GB) are prized.

  • 3delinquent3delinquent Posts: 355

Can I assume that eventually there will be a 1080 with more than 8gb? Have I got it right that the vram doesn't stack but the cores will as long as the scene fits on the smaller card in its entirety? Thanks.

There  are  going to be better GTX 1080 soon , hold your horses , the best cards versions are never from the main makers

I want to see what evga and msi come out with in overclocked/superclocked cards and hopefully one of them will out-perform my overclocked msi 980 ti for about the price I paid for the 980 ti last year. I just do this for a hobby and I'm not a gamer, so I'm interested in a semi-affordable card larger than 6 GB.

Rendering iray scene with the same card type
    1 x GTX Titan X 12GB - 100.5 s
    2 x GTX Titan X 12GB - 62.25s
    3 x GTX Titan X 12GB - 44.25s
    4 x GTX Titan X 12GB - 26.15s

2 Titan X cards don't render double faster , 3 cards will do
    Do you know that
    2 x Titan X 12GB are 30% slower than 4 x GTX 980 4GB and 28% slower than 3 x GTX 980TI 6GB
but the price is the same or less for the 3 sets  , you getting extra speed for nothing
the only thing you losing here is the performance vs  memory
it is recommended to use the same card type sets and not mix them for best performance for the money you spend

so not mixing Titan X with 980 as you will lose the perfomance of Titan X with iray, not worth the money

Have I got it right that the vram doesn't stack but the cores will as long as the scene fits on the smaller card in its entirety? Thanks.

I know that all of them are allowed to do whatever they want with GTx 1080 so they may come with a really superclocked beast  and the water cooled will be even faster that the air cooled so really worth waiting for .

I think the 1070 will see more buisness from cuda users because of price and size of video memory. I never upgraded to 980's because they were over priced. People don't need bleeding edge they just need fuction. I slowly bought three Nvida 780's 6gb edition. They only had 2330 cores instead of the 2880 cores of a 780ti but I got 6gb of Video ram to load textures into. I wish Nvidia would just put upgradable slots on their cards so if you need more memory you could add a chip to double the memory. But, this is not going to happen! They could it, but it would cut into card sales and that is just bad business. All those 780ti's are great cards they just need a boost in memory size. Wouldnt it be great if there was a company out there that recylcled video cards by upgrading memory capcity. Just my 2cents

:) glad my questions help others too it is a big dicision buying a new computer or upgrading any part of it so getting others opinions can help making the right choices and perhaps saving money especially those of us on budgets or have a once in a lifetime chance of getting something really good that hopefully lasts a long time too. I'm not positive btw but the builds of those pcs I've been looking at the titans may have come down in price cause on pc with 7 hard drives 1 being sdd in my choices and 2 titans and some other maxed upgrades I picked it ends up being under $11000, 2x 1080s just over $9 and 2x 1070s under $9 saving 633 between 1070 - 1080 for two cards. Well on my current Aspire v17 Nitro (this is actually one of if not the best you can get here locally btw-I think a lot of you would die laughing at computers offered here as being fantastic computers) I'm having some problems with some renders with controls freezing stalling and crashing lastest project has 5 figs -Demonara +2 Demonaro with a Lee 7 laing on the ground all scarred about to fight Mei Lin 7 wearing V4 frostbite costume and other outfits from various sets and armed with sword shield with the set piece being the castle chateau blanche, around the campfire + bunch of lights. So there's a lot in this scene I can't help I got to have a lot in my scenes and I still want to make bigger scenes so I'll go which ever option is better 2x 1080s or 2 titans whichever can do big complex scenes better then my other choice to decide the pc with 32gb memory or the one with 64gb memory

well 4 titans are out of my range really could have gone for 4 1080's and there is that option on one of the pcs looking at but everyone including nvidia apparently shockingly  has said it's not practical wont really work and apparently again nvidia has said if you must have 3 1080s it is kinda possible but you gotta ask them for a special code and that third card is used for something else not really combined with the first 2

Just my 2cents

luckily I can go for the 1080s or titans but yeah it would be great if they had easy to use slots that you could plug in upgrades easliy like those hard drive cages you can just plug in a hard drive without having to connect cables take things apart like plugging in those old game carts in the old consoles before they became disks

Just a note about the Mec4D performance bench: the time seems to be the whole calculation time, including the initial calculation before transfert to the nvidia cards.

This initial period of time is roughly independant to the GPU. The iray strats after that.

You should be aware that :

    - if you only do little renders, you won't get big improvments in the whole calculation time be cause this initialization is a big % of the whole render time.

    - if you render big stuff, then this initial setup time is a little % of the whole render time: and then, the gain of adding cards/GPU is pretty much linear (2 identical GPU get 2x faster, 4 GPU, 4 times faster...)

I've read on the dev forum of NVidia that the 1080 drivers are not yet iray compatible and that they are currently working hard to do it: maybe it is the reason why NOBODY on mainstream testers around the world did ZERO iray render test....

yeah only seen examples tests with these new cards on games and none on 3d creation/iray, the usual photoshop, music and video tests yet they're mainly pushing it to hard core gamers and vr these new cards may the most fantasic cards yet for that but for everyone else not that great where it's needed except for price, cooling and speed good too but then probably more benifit to gamers than other users
