      • Support for all compute capabilities on MacOS has been added.

.... Wait, as a Mac user, what on Earth does this mean?

Probably not much, I'd presume, because my iMac has a Radeon card and not an Nvidia one. Oh well.

Anyhow, for sales, I see quite a few vendors with 40% off, but others don't. Did I miss something here?

If you haven't been using a beta pretty much nothing. The version of Iray in some of the earlier betas was misreading the compute version of nVidia cards and deciding that soem that could be used couldn't; the update to the latest version fixed that (and also a crash on some AMD CPUs which was a different version-related issue, as an aside).

Hmm, does the new Iray scale with the number of CPU cores or is it still more or less dependent on raw FLOPs? This will determine whether I upgrade in the coming year or not...

Someone said to archive the previous version just in case. How do I do that? Also will this overwrite some categories I created and delete scripts that I added? And still confused about whether this will improve CPU only rendering or just enhances performance for people with NVIDIA cards...

Has anyone gotten the item called "DAZ Studio Shadow Master" and how do you like it. I found it in the 'fast grab' category. I am trying to decide what I want. :)

I have it but haven't watched it yet. I bought a ton of Val's tutorials last year on sale and have been slowly working my way through them. All of them have been very good.

So in summary - new Iray renders faster, even in CPU mode, (from another thread - also on Mac) - Yay :)

In a quick test I did it's actually slower in CPU mode (Windows), but uses less memory.  I can't guarantee the test is 100% reliable though.

I use DIM, so the only way I know to archive the file is to go to the downloads folder for DIM, locate the file, and copy it to another folder. My archive folders are named the version, for example: Release 4.8 or Beta 4.9.3.166. Then I copy over all the files for that version, including plugins like Measure Metric and Decimator, etc. It won't help to reinstall the older version if you don't have the release-specific plugins as well.

You can find the downloads path in the DIM settings.Click on the little gear in the upper right corner. Then click on the Downloads tab. Look for "Download To: and you should see the path. For example, my path is "C:/Users/Public/Documents/DAZ 3D/InstallManager/Downloads"

Search for files starting with "IM00013176" to find Daz Studio files, (Default Resources, Interactive Lessons, Daz Studio, etc.) I also have: Dynamic Clothing Control, IM00016591; Decimator, IM00016594; Mimic Live, IM00016596; and Measure Metrics, IM00016686.

Those numbers correspond with the SKU on the product page, so if you have a plugin you think might be version specific, you can find the base number on the product page, then add "IM" followed by enough zeroes in front of the SKU to create a 10-character designation.

I agree. I just want a short and sweet list of what the changes are and what they mean. In layman's terms. Does this effect

    Affect.

me in any way? I don't know. I don't know what pascal generation means,

    Nvidia 10xx series cards.

    what radial bias is,

Out of focus bright points (things behind the subject, when you're using "depth of field" effects expand to full circles when near the center of the image, but to a variety of semicircle and crescent moon shapes as they are closer to the edge of the image. It's considered a lens flaw, something that comes from not using big enough lens elements inside the lens. It does a bunch of other tricks with OOF areas, like giving them aperture blade shapes (but not "starbursts" radiating from bright points, yet).

    what spectoral rendering is,

Making light that shines through cut glass, glasses of water, gemstones cause realistic looking "caustics", projected bright areas, complete with pretty color fringes. This costs renderting time, I'm guessing a factor of 3-10.

Darnit... that Sweater Dress is in my wishlist and that was below my trigger price, but all the spam in my e-mail box drowned out your alert, @ATI

I'm going to have to set up some filters. I hate that. :)

On the other hand, Pose Converter G2 to G3 is on sale in Fastgrab right now for an excellent price.

Actually, I don't see any alerts for it in e-mail either, and the price it is at should have triggered an alert too. Gonna have to go research this.

  • Different Sweater Dress. How many versions of that does DAZ need? Evidently a popular piece of clothing.

And I didn't have the Pose Converter set to trigger. Somehow, with my other discounts, it was even cheaper than the Fastgrab price. Just when I think I'm done spending, DAZ drags me back in again.

So... on the latest version... I *am* running a DAZ 4.9 Beta. But I'm hesitant to upgrade to the release - how do I *know* if my version has the IRAY problem that the release version addresses? Otherwise, I'd rather wait and let other people beta test the final release for a while - while I stick with the devil I know versus the devil I don't.

And yes- nice fast grabs today! I still holding out hope that Dreamlight has an awesome flash sale soon. I picked up so much around this time last year for 90% off. I still have plenty left to watch.

I'm really *terrible* at Enligsh. If it wasn't for spell-check - people would know my level of education without needing to volunteer it. Even so, the Grammar Nazis can tell - there are other ways than bad spelling that we reveal ourselves to them. :D

I was once in a pub in England, and a South African guy kept telling me he couldn't understand me and to speak English. Finally I responded, "I don't know English, they only taught me American."

I drank free for the rest of the night. :)

(I hadn't realized everyone in the bar was listening in to our conversation, but evidently when an American and a South African are having a conversation in the local, it is pretty interesting stuff...)

Oh, you mean just keep a zip copy of the original version. That I can do. Not sure what plugins I have that are dependent on those though. Now I'm getting mixed messages about whether this will improve CPU only renders at all.... Have some possible paid projects coming up soon, hopefully I can afford a second machine in the not too distant future. Although I don't actually have anywhere to put it. I've got to win the lottery and move to a bigger place!!!

Yes. If you use DIM, archiving the zip and the dsx files will allow you to use DIM to reinstall. (Uninstall the newer version, put a copy of the archived files in the DIM Downloads folder, refresh/sync DIM, reinstall older version.) All of the plugins I have that are version dependent have "forDAZStudio49Win64bit" in the filename. I recommend saving those files before downloading the new ones, as the new will overwrite the old.

I'm not clear on whether or not there is a CPU Only speed improvement between the 4.9.3.70 (?) and the current 4.9.3.166 release. There is definitely a CPU Only speed improvement between 4.8 and 4.9. If you want to try out 4.9.3.166 without replacing the existing install on your computer, get the beta and install that. You'll have to "purchase" it through the store if you haven't already. And you have to install it via the DIM. But the two will work side-by-side. My new computer is set up that way. This computer still has 4.8 and an older version of the 4.9 beta.

I gave up trying to set aside money for a new computer. With my husband's knowledge, (didn't need his approval, but some things you like to let the other half know about first, you know?) I put my new computer on my Visa. Now I'm kicking out the charge at about $500/mo. (Visa loves me. They've offered to increase my credit line. Thanks... but no thanks. lol) The humongous tower for the new computer is behind my monitor on a corner desk. The old HP is on an old printer stand next to that. I use one monitor for both, (a real pain in the neck,) with two keyboards and two wireless trackmans. It's cramped, but somehow manages to work. I used to keep a second tower on the floor under the desk, sitting on some extra floor tiles to keep it off the carpet. Get creative. I'm sure you can shoehorn a new computer in there somewhere!

I  already have the current 4.9 version whatever that is, but will give the new one a try, I have a meeting Monday for hopefully a new project that I can put the money towards a new computer but I may have to go back to Poser for a while on my Mac to crank out some quick art until I can afford a Windows PC. I spent a ridiculous amount of time yesterday testing a Thorne Kid 4 texture on Genesis 1, morphing it, fitting K4 clothes and V4 hair to Genesis and using Anagenesis resulting in a 8.5 hour render when I could have just used the original adorable Thorne K4 character and K4 clothes and rendered in Poser for 2 minutes! I always do postwork anyway and don't really need photorealism for that kind of character.

Daz is killing me though. I love ALL of today's new releases and every single one of the vendors are my favorites so it's such a temptation to buy their stores while on sale now, but I know there will be more sales. But ugh, so many of my favorite PAs together in a sale I can't afford...  This is the first time I would buy every single new release if I could plus buy whatever I don't have from all the corresponding PAs' stores if I had the money. Sci-fi, new morphs, cool shaders, everything I love together from my favorite vendors... But any art I created would take about 18-32 hours to render on my CPU only Mac or PC laptop... Guess I should focus on getting a new Windows computer with NVIDIA first and figure out how to use Genesis in Poser in the meantime or go back to V4 and non-Iray products for a while. I will try to use the "Law Of Attraction" to get a new Windows PC LOL!

There are some great ones today! I just picked up the Gemology shaders. If you buy them both together, they're about $8 each. And of course, that means extra discounts on the featured sellers stores, including Iggy's. So Lady Darkness came home with me too. Woohoo! The Pix stuff is so tempting. I have Pix Synx and still haven't done anything with her yet, since I don't currently do much sci fi, but I love it anyhow. I got the Pix Synx expansion pretty cheap, around $4. SickleYield's store is on sale too. I picked up Fast Fog and Fast Flames for Iray, as well as Rippled and Wakes, for around $5 each. Forgot to get a screenshot. Been up all night with a sick kid. Yay.

@L'Adair, Just an idea that might help your pain with multiple peripherals... For one of my set-ups, I have a single monitor that I habitually use with two computers. I use a KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switch that allows me to use one monitor, keyboard, and mouse for both computers. I just hit a button on the switch when I want to change which computer I'm using and my devices become active to that computer. The switch can actually handle four computers.

    The switch I'm currently using:
IOGEAR 4-Port DVI KVMP Switch with Audio and 4-USB 2.0, DVI-D KVM Cables, GCS1104
    https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B002RCTNKW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also have one of my setups where I don't have a physical switch (I need to get another if this continues), but I normally only use one computer with that monitor/keyboard/mouse. However, right now I'm rendering on three computers from there, so I just use Remote Desktop Connection to get to the other two computers. It's a bit more of a pain, because if I have to close DAZ, I have to go back to each computer for a minute to restart DAZ (I get a OpenGL error if I try to start DAZ through Remote Desktop, but it runs fine remotely once it is up).  I do all the main DAZ work on the main computer and only render on the other two.

Hope that makes sense. My coffee is still kicking in, LOL! :)

    FWIW, YMMV.

  • I hate it that DAZ doesn't allow two versions of the software working side by side (as the beta-version does, and that shows, it's possible). Staying with 4.8 and 4.9beta.

Maybe I will have to divide my content between two PCs, one which uses 4.8, renders in 3Delight and works with old shaders and software, one which uses 4.9, renders in Iray for such stuff I like but can't get in 3Delight version. Frustrating.

The other alternative is stopping to buy new content and work with the old stuff for the rest of my life.
If only the PAs wouldn't always make so desirable new stuff ...

Why only beta? I had 4.9 and 4.8 running in parallel with no problems. Just install one of them manually (instead of through DIM) and change the install folder during installation. Like instead of DAZStudio make an extra one DAZStudio49. Or did you only refer to how categories are behaving if running two databases (they can get a bit wonky).

Or you could do what I did which was to rename the directory where DAZ Studio to something meaningful (I used DS4.9.2). When you do this, though, you'll have to first let DIM install DS (prior to installing the rest of the new files, such as the clothing module or goz) so that the various addons can find the right directory since they assume a particular to install into.

Hm, I could try that. I still have the old install files, in case something goes wrong...

Takes some wading through, but there are some very good stacking deals today, a couple on bundles. You just need to have three in your cart for the max discount:

Thanks, and check out the 90% off deals today (must have 3 featured artists in the cart for these.) Now know those are my kind of bargains! And the items are very nice. Each outfit comes with five textures. The character also looks very good.

Imaginary House has some awesome deals today. These three are from the "Strict Enforcement" bundle but much cheaper separately. David Brinnen/Forbidden Whispers is another featured artist today, and all the prison stuff is on sale, would go well with the police stuff. I actually need some of these things to do promo renders for my next book. Yay! (That's the excuse I'm sticking with!)
