Yes, that would be my assumption.
ETA: I found this at the top of the linked New Features page:
New Features
Current Version
4.9
(4.9.3.166)
http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/new_features/start
I have no idea what any of this means-- soooo over my head! Does any of his affect Mac users who can render with CPU only??? Is there some sort of cloud rendering yet? Can you still keep the old version if this doesn't work correctly or does this overwrite it? I wish there was a plain English description of changes for non- geeks...
I agree. I just want a short and sweet list of what the changes are and what they mean. In layman's terms. Does this effect me in any way? I don't know. I don't know what pascal generation means, what radial bias is, what spectoral rendering is, what UV clipping to decal nodes means, what a closet vortex is, etc etc. The release notes are FILLED with that kind of jargon. And frankly, my head hurts trying to read all that. I don't really WANT to know what all that means (as I think my head would explode if anyone tried to explain it to me lol), I just want to know what changes I can expect ...in terms I can understand. If nothing has changed or if nothing has changed enough for me to notice, then tell me that. I just want to know what it means To Me ..a person without a PHD in 3D Rendering Jargon. lol I don't want to download the changes until I know what those changes are and how they'll affect me and my work flow as an average user. Or even IF they will affect my work.
I'd sort of consider myself a geek and I have no idea what I'm meant to be celebrating with this new maybe release. Most software programs and games manage to have an easy to access patch notes + overview when they release a new version. So I'll just ignore it until it becomes evident that I'm missing something.
I read that....don't see any "new features" at all. I'm going over to the daz studio discussion forum to see if there's anything there.
There are a few plugins which also seem to be updated in DIM along with the studio:
Decimator for Daz Studio
Dynamic Clothing Control
Measure Metrics
GoZ for Daz Studio
This is based on what I own. There could possible be more plugins that are updated with this update. I have not yet installed the the newer version of Studio and waiting for feedback if other plugins that have not been modified are still compatible. I would suggest getting a backup of the Studio installer (and associated plugins) from your existing DIM installation folder before downloading the new Studio update.
Request to Daz: Please announce the update a day early from the actual release so that users can get sufficient time to (re)download the old DIM installation files while it is still available through DIM.
Ah ok, here we are. New general release: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/138871/daz-studio-4-9-3-pro-general-release
And about the new iray release: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/1970126/#Comment_1970126
Thanks for the links. Joining the confusion here too. And like Ix, I consider myself a geek. No idea what the schtuff means yet. Just that it's supposed to be better at doing...something! Time to go read!
I don't understand a single word of it. LOL. I'll wait till either someone translates it or until others d/l the new version and tell us what it's like.
I agree that the release notes do not make easy reading, and a lot of what you mentioned (spectoral rendering etc) I also have no idea about either, and I have a technical background.
I think the main benefits of the new release in laymen terms are:
1) Abilty to use the latest nVidia graphics cards in IRay rendering, ie the Pascal series, GTX 1070, GTX 1080 etc.
2) The IRay renderer is faster.
Hopefully some of the experts will play with some of the new features, eg: UV clipping stuff, and explain what using it can help achieve in more basic terms.
What does this mean? Will Iray render faster on Mac's CPU only renders? And what was the stuff about VR? Can you create VR in DS? I'm wondering if ANYONE actually understands the new changes since self-professed tech geeks don't get it...
Well, I'm impressed. I'm rendering a scene now that took 12 hours before. I have a "good enough" computer, but often I could hear it shift into CPU only mode instead of using my 750Ti. Here's that same scene already halfway done and it seems to be only using GPU. It told me something about using 26 MB in the verbose mode, but still not totally understanding that part.
EDIT: I posted the finished scene in my Art Thread. It only took about an hour and a half to render. That's WAY better than before!
Archive your existing files for the previous 4.9 release before downloading and installing this release. Then if you run into any issues, you'll be able to reinstall the older version. I have no idea what this means for Mac users; not having a Mac, I didn't pay any attention. But I feel confident DAZ wouldn't have released this version unless they were reasonable certain it would work with Macs.
"Support for all compute capabilities on Mac OS..."
Is either a bad translation from Chinese to English... or something really obscure that means something for people who develop code or do hardware engineering on Macs.
My money is on the former. "All compute capabilities," sounds like something an offshore/outsourced employee would say when he is trying to BS his way through something he doesn't quite understand, to me ears.
I've been using 4.9 Beta since I started with DAZ. It never occured to me that any/a lot of you are still using 4.8 or earlier...
Q: What is the "compute capability"?
The compute capability of a GPU determines its general specifications and available features. For details, see the Compute Capabilities section in the CUDA C Programming Guide.
Oh, yeah. Many of use old fogeys with lower end rigs still use the older DS (usually the most stable versions), keeping the installers someplace handy. Partly because we don't have the hardware to take advantage of the newer features, and partly for emergencies when the current version turns out to be buggy or something.
Also because 4.9 heralded Connect and encrypted content (although it is perfectly fine to use 4.9 without ever touching any of these things.) But when 4.9 was released a lot of people didn't want to move over from 4.8. I waited awhile until the changed Iray shader situation became unbearable but I still have a bunch of figures with the legacy shaders so not that much difference in the end I guess.
.... Wait, as a Mac user, what on Earth does this mean?
Probably not much, I'd presume, because my iMac has a Radeon card and not an Nvidia one. Oh well.
Anyhow, for sales, I see quite a few vendors with 40% off, but others don't. Did I miss something here?

Oh, yeah, that, too. I'm glad that hogwash of a situation didn't get any further along. First time I tried it led to a BSOD. Nope. Not doing that anymore.
what is a Mac?
And some of us are waiting for some sort of replacement for the Blue Highlight for catagorising in Content Library that they removed in 4.9. I'd happily upgrade and never use Connect if I could get that functionality back. Running 4.8 and 4.9 Beta on the same system just becomes a nightmare. Import the database to 4.9 beta half the time ends up with duplicate entries in my Catagories. Reset db in 4.9 Beta and then have to reimport to 4.8 and then duplicate appear there. Most of the time I stick with 4.8 and save myself the frustration.
Well in the UK mac can be an abbreviation for a mackintosh
Sunny here in New England... ;)
I hate it that DAZ doesn't allow two versions of the software working side by side (as the beta-version does, and that shows, it's possible). Staying with 4.8 and 4.9beta.
Maybe I will have to divide my content between two PCs, one which uses 4.8, renders in 3Delight and works with old shaders and software, one which uses 4.9, renders in Iray for such stuff I like but can't get in 3Delight version. Frustrating.
The other alternative is stopping to buy new content and work with the old stuff for the rest of my life.
If only the PAs wouldn't always make so desirable new stuff ...
I live in Wales now, Wales can be a little damp on occasions http://www.urban75.org/blog/its-official-cardiff-is-the-wettest-city-in-britain-followed-by-glasgow-and-preston/
It was drizzly here yesterday. No 'New Wales' here on this side of The Pond. However, it's summer in New South Wales. I once had a colleague from there, and he said it was very pleasant...
Not sure Fast Grab is supposed to be this cheap, but these are some great deals on Aeon Soul and IH Kang items:
So in summary - new Iray renders faster, even in CPU mode, (from another thread - also on Mac) - Yay :)
