Why did I get the impression that today was the last day for it?  I think I was going on the 'week before Christmas' idea being 7 days.  So nothing official.  I'd love another day of this though

Hum....I'd love another full year or this cheeky

We should write a petition! laugh

By the time they reached "365 free items (or 366 with a new release)!" we'd either have exhausted their back catalogue, or we'd be spending twelve hours a day selecting freebies to download. ("Carnival Textures for Michael 1 Ostrich Feather Underwear? I guess I should have that, just in case, ... but then I have to take the Aged Snakeskin Materials for Stephanie Petite's Folding Umbrella and Entrenching Tool Set out of my cart. Oh, why do these decisions always have to be so hard?")

I'm convinced divamakeup is correct - some of the items have been removed from that freebie section. I know that "Lucie's Wish for Lucid Dreams" was in there before...because I had been tossing up whether to get it as a freebie but decided against it as I already have a texture set for that outfit and I rarely use the outfit anyway. And it's not there now. And I'm almost certain that "Rosemill Moor Iray" was there too...I remember debating over that one too but I don't use the rosemill moor set as it's too big for me. Neither of those are there now.

ha ha...i just unchecked 'hide items i own' just to see what other stuff was there....and here I was grumbling to myself that there wasn't a lot of G3F/G3M or iray stuff in that section...because I own nearly all of it anyway! Maybe I should stop buying and just wait till next year's Christmas sale. LOL

For those who don't have them yet, the animals and creatures in the list are great choices (especially the dinos!). Environments and vehicles should also be prioritized (the older Danie and Marforno, Predatron, Jack Tomalin, Stonemason products and such never go out of style, especially if you have the shaders to tweak them).

So today is 7 items free (or 8 if you have a new release)....I'm at the point I think where I can't find anything! LOL! Never thought I'd say that I can't find 7 freebies! :)

Well, thinking out of the box with kitbashing, and trying to get things that go together, here are two that you can use parts of a bodysuit underneath (then shader them for even more classy looks) and they go together. It was hard finding anything other than textures- but these are the outfits AND their textures, all in the freebies:

Think leggings, if you want to change the look and get more family friendly due to the shortness of the skirt:

Definitely putting a bodysuit under the top and adding leggings. But heh, it's free.

I've almost decided on 8 for today...but I'm leaving the cart to sit awhile so I can mull over which renders I want to do the most.

I never wait when the prices in the cart are behaving. Not worth it for freebies, particularly when most of it is textures that I don't need, I have tons of shaders. I've already got all the props or the ones there are close to something I already have (how many swords or bone crushing mallets does someone need?)

  • Did the Cian for Darius 7 freebie (with purchase of an ozichick item) expire? http://www.daz3d.com/cian-for-darius-7 He's not showing in the Darius 7 page any longer and not free on the cart. Can anyone else confirm that?

I'm not seeing him there either, though I already have him (should at least be a blank space on the page where he was, and there isn't.) When I click on his page, it says he's 14.95. Seems like that deal expired very fast.

Today's pick of the freebies was quite varied for me. I got monsters, flowers, food, snowmen, prisoners, piglets and penguins. Say that five times fast! HA!

And there are some great new products today, especially for someone rendering fiery superheroes! OMG, it really is Christmas! My next superhero book, Playing with Fire, centers around fire shifters, and I was trying to figure out how I was going to do the effects for the cover and the promos. Between MRL Mutations, Iray Fire Royalty and Ron's Flames, I think I'll be all set. Thank you PAs for providing the answer and lightening my pocketbook even more. Santa's been good to me this year. LOL

Yep, it's gone. He's no longer free with purchase from Ozichick. The deal started Tuesday so it was up for 3 days (including Tues.) which I think has been standard for the Christmas PA free wth purchase deals.

Here's an interesting one in the featured PAs today, Gi Dome for Iray and 3Delight light set. It has five different lighting packs in it, for both render engines. Picked it up for $6 with all the discounts. Rendering now with one of the portrait presets. It's a lot like Dimension Theory's Iradiance Light Probes, which I love.

This render is still cooking. Looks a little dark, might need more lighting in the scene. Testing with only the GI Dome and have't decided on a backdrop or set yet. I bumped intensity up to 2. I love how the light hits Lilith's skin (used her normal shaders.)

  • It is a nice to see an occasional render here that shows what people are doing with the products they've scooped up during the sale. I don't mind, I hope no one else does... I was coming here to show a quick test render I did after grabbing the Cast Away Dinghy, using Terradome 3 and Cian for Darius 7.

I saw the Cast Away Dinghy and thought, "that could be a nice little sailboat with a fresh coat of paint..."

Wow! That looks great! Lovely character and outfit!

I almost passed it up because of that - but then I realized that it is a real versatile model with a little creativity. I love that feeling when I realize I've had an "aha moment," with DAZ that expands my creativity and skill with the program. Shaders and emitters just clicked for me, and I've been having a great time playing around with all my old content to see how I can repurpose it, as well as having fun figuring out how to do more dramatic and realistic lighting. The problem with the latter is that my i5 with Geforce 750ti 2GB isn't really up to the task of doing very complex lighting (or, I don't have the patience to wait for 24 hour renders to finish). I need a better rig... Something with a DSLI GeForce 950 setup... :)

  • I still don't get UV sets and how to use skins from an earlier generation with a latter generation - and the shader baker and shader mixer elude me. :)

We're all still learning. but great call on the dingy! I'll have to grab that one if we get another freebie day.

@divamakeup - that's Lilith 7 in the Miss Arachne outfit. She seems to look great in anything, but this outfit is pretty amazing. Got it for $5 a couple days ago.

Yea, that's the crazy hard part for me lighting and  trying to get the surfaces tabs to make the existing materials/texures to look decent. Maybe I jsut need to start remaking them. :)

I still don't get UV sets and how to use skins from an earlier generation with a latter generation - and the shader baker and shader mixer elude me. :)

The simplest way to understand UV sets is to think that the actual model has a map assigned to it (or several, hence sets) that say where the texture will go on the character.

Getting older generation textures to fit on a new one isn't really something you can do yourself it's more a converter type job that someone has made (or UVs for x figure you want type products.)

A lot of these concepts are simpler if you think of them in general 3D terms rather than Studio terms. I have no idea how to use shader baker or shader mixer, but I understand the basics of how a surface/material works and that opens up quite a lot.

  • I think I get the *concept*. The UV Map is basically the wireframe model of the character, right - and that determines what planes materials will sit on and strech across - so if you try and put a material, like a skin, from a G2 character on a G3 character - it'll stretch and things won't be in the right place... lips end up too high or low, eyes and eyebrows, other anatomical parts, are in the wrong place and stretched out?

So, it SEEMS to me like there is some sort of way to map the UV so that the wireframe under the character matches the character you're trying to load materials for... But I don't get that part of it... I see these products and I'm confused between the difference of clones, UV maps, and how that allows you more flexibility with combining materials...

So for example... if I take Gen X 2 and transfer a G2 character to G3, even with a clone shape, I can't load the G2 character's materials on the G3, even though they LOOK identical (or nearly so) without any mats at all applied... But I *think* there is some way to do that - if I use something to make the G3 morph of the G2 character have the same base UV map as the G2 character...

Is that right? Am I even in the ballpark? :)

  • I just tried using today's code (DAY-SEVEN-BONUS) and was told it was invalid!? Anybody else? Am I on the wrong day?

  • Never mind. I had one too many items.

Basically - you take the 3d-shape and 'unwrap' it - laying it flat on a 2D surface - that's the UV map.  But then the different parts can be moved around on that surface - so even two identical cubes could have a different uv-map.  The whitespace on a UV map isn't assigned to a surface - so applying the wrong texture gives you white patches on your model as well as things in the wrong place.

G2 and G3 might also have different parts mapped to different maps (Eg. arms and hands in one map, torso in another - or arms, hands and torso on one map, etc).

So to convert a model to use another's UVs (or convert a map to fit another model) needs more than just making the shape right.  It also needs to be positioned correctly on the 2D image.

Good day, I think this is the part you are missing. With a 3D model (like a person) you have the X, Y, and Z axis to deal with. When a modeler is making a texture map (like skin color) to fit onto that 3D model, they are only working with a 2D image ... because XYZ are already used for coordinates on the 3D image, the letters U, and V are used as the coordinates on the 2D map. The converters simply say how to place the UV/2D textures onto the XYZ/3D model.

Thanks for that explanation: I always wondered what UV stood for, and was embarrassed to ask because I thought it should be obvious.

The wireframe model itself (the 3D bit) is the mesh. The UV map is basically some settings that tell the program how to wrap the texture around the mesh.

While the actual mesh (model whatever) looks about the same, the actual layout of the textures (when they're flattened out to images) is completely different between G2 and G3, which is why it's complicated to transfer them and generally requires products designed for it.
