Anything that still has a "new" banner qualifies as a New Release. Even stuff that was released a month ago. (Granted, that stuff's usually not on sale any more, but still)
LOL, the autism is strong with me today (must be the coloured letters). I'd have used more punctuation in that sentence. Or different colours.
An eats, shoots and leaves scenario. I agree, the punctuation is lacking, but hey, it's free stuff, right? Grab it while you can.
It's been over a year now of these endless super sales and while there have been constant errors and problems the entire time, they're still gung ho doing them despite not being able to fix the errors, so it must be working out for them overall.
Personally without the sales I wouldn't be able to afford any of the content, so I don't really feel bad when things turn up at a discount - I already pay more than I can really afford towards this hobby. The only real exception where I won't go for any glitched things is new releases, since I think items should have their chance to sell at their intended price while they do most of their selling to those who can afford and really need them. When someone grabs an older item up because of a glitched lower price it's usually a case of "this would never have been a sale otherwise."
Has it been stated that they should stack? On previous occasions DAZ has gone back in and removed unintentional stacking on promotions, so maybe this sale is a non-stacking one.
I wondered that myself. So I went back to today's sale page, and there is nothing stating the Top Sellers discount replaces the PA discounts. If they aren't going to give us the stacking discounts, it should be stated. And if it isn't stated, the discounts should stack. Otherwise, it's false advertising, something I'm pretty sure DAZ does not intend.
Honestly, I think it's just DAZ pushing the cart software to the limit and beyond with so many different promotions going on at the same time. I'd say they should change their software, but honestly, I've heard Magento is one of the best... short of writing your own. And I'd rather the programmers at DAZ worked on the next releases of their software than write a new shopping cart program.
Still, they need to get on top of these glitches. It's not good to have customers always grumbling...
ETA: Here's a screenshot of the 2016 Top Sellers promotion at the bottom of today's sales page:
Ooh, can't agree with that. Stacking discounts cannot reasonably be regarded as a default position that needs specific cancellation.
I've just noticed the Cayman Studios product in the Top Seller's list is still a new release. So the 72% off I'm seeing in my cart is correct.

However, i13's Neighborhood Bar is from last April, and it's also getting only the 72% off, in spite of Irnoman13 being a featured artist, (40% off, 50% off with new release in cart,) in two other current sales promos, here and here. Stonemason also has three products in the list, and they aren't stacking either. I think those are the only two PAs on the list that aslo have Featured Artists discounts promotions going on right now...
I respectfully disagree.
Notice the disclaimer on the Fast Grab page. It specifically states the "Fast Grab discount does not combine with other discounts." Other promotions have also specifically stated when a better discount is available for some reason, that the higher discount replaces the lower one, not stacking... For example, the message about today's 36% discounts states, "Discount replaces Holiday Loyalty Rewards discount and applies only to featured new releases and featured artist catalogs mentioned in this message." DAZ has set the precedent, over a significant period of time, that promotion discounts stack when the criteria for more than one promotion are met, unless otherwise specified.
All of this. The truth is, if I buy something at a huge discount and the PA gets anything, even pennies on the dollar compared to what they expect, they're probably making more money from me than they would have if the stacking discount hadn't made me buy - unless there is a condition where DAZ sells an item and tells the PA they made zero...
Sometimes I think people selling an item get caught up on what they're "losing" instead of reazling that they made money they wouldn't have made otherwise. I reazlie they've got to pay the bills and they can't sell for a loss... but if you could show them, "look, those stacking sales where you lost thousands of dollars, those people really wouldn't have bought at ANY other price... so you MADE hundreds of dollars you wouldn't have made otherwise..."
I wonder if they would change their minds. There is a glass-half-empty and glass-half-full way to look at these things.
And... even if they uninentionally give me a freebie because they don't get paid - as L'Adair said - it may introduce me to an artist with a product and quality that I like so much I start paying more attention to their catalog.
I can see your point, but it really doesn't matter though if you NEED to make x amount of money a month for bills or return on investment to justify the work put into a project. It's why I could never rely on my 3d commercial projects to live on when it is unknown on the amount I make monthly, unlike my full time job.
My initial thought anytime someone mentions PAs not making enough money is that the problem is not a wide enough customer base to support a fulltime job, but "well Daz should bring in a load more people then" isn't exactly a simple thing to do. I bet there are a load of artists out there that could make use of 3D posing tools, though. A long time after I'd moved to digital art I only vaguely heard Poser mentioned a few times and thought it was just another piece of 3D software (ie to make things from scratch) and it wasn't until I eventually did stumble across it that I learned that the figures everyone used came from here and then from that discovered Studio and how much better it was. There have to be others around with disposable income and no idea that these products exist. Are there many that are willing to pay for things? I don't know, but I was shocked when I was looking at DeviantArt recently and seeing how much people are happy to pay for all sorts of random things for artists based off there.
TDLR I'm already giving PAs all my money, if they need more, they need more customers.
I wonder if DAZ advertizes on DeviantArt or places like that?
They advertize on Facebook; I saw one today...
"Download a FREE 3D Software Program while it is still available."
...with the link...
www.daz3d.com/get_studio
I see it nearly every time I go to DeviantArt. Also they advertise a lot on Youtube lately.
More than likely it is just ad remarketing and not them advertising on facebook.
We see DAZ ads because we're flagged and targeted for being interested in DAZ. I'm wondering if folks who haven't heard of DAZ see those ads? Just curious. No way to tell unless someone wanders around totally anonymously w/serious privacy protection.
To be honest, I forgot that ads existed on websites. I haven't seen any for years.
I block ads, but Facebook gets around that now.
I see various ads from places(newegg, nuts.com, daz, etc) I have shopped or frequented a lot everywhere I go utube, etc. I would think it is targeted adverts which is weird and makes no sense because why target you if you already know about it?? :P
Sometimes I think people selling an item get caught up on what they're "losing" instead of reazling that they made money they wouldn't have made otherwise. I realize they've got to pay the bills and they can't sell for a loss... but if you could show them, "look, those stacking sales where you lost thousands of dollars, those people really wouldn't have bought at ANY other price... so you MADE hundreds of dollars you wouldn't have made otherwise..."
usualy we do look at it on the bright side, and some often price to account for deep sales, but after seeing posts in this thread I went and looked at my account..our account pages show around 100 products on each page,I had to go 15 pages deep before seeing returns of more than 3 dollars(of which we only get half)..and these are models priced in the 40 to 50$ range..so congrats to anyone who picked up my 50 dollar models for 50 cents, that's what I call a bargain.but big thanks also for those who posted about it here,I wouldn't have noticed it otherwise.
it's a curious contrast to the 'prices are too high' thread that was running here recently :)
Personally I don't think that prices are too high - just that I can rarely afford them (that doesn't mean I think they should change just for me.)
That said I also haven't been buying any of the crazy stacking deals that have popped up lately, since I just wind up spending a load of money on things I was only semi curious about for the sake of a good deal.
I try not to block ads on sites like Youtube, as that's the only way the content creators there can make money for all their time and work creating independent media content.
I agree with the first part for sure. There are many many times I've purchased items here for really awesome prices that I otherwise never would have bought. Some PAs would be seeing that as a loss, thinking that I would have bought the item at a higher price - and, honestly I wouldn't have, just because the really low prices are a way to get people to "impulse buy" things that they otherwise would pass on. I think there are probably a lot of poeple who impulse buy like that. Purchasing items here that they wouldn't have otherwise, just because of the great price. :)
As for the "prices too high" thread the other day - I started that, but if you look at the day that it was posted and at the items that where released on that day, many (most?) where quite a bit higher than most of the items that are released here at DAZ. It was a day of pretty high prices on most of the items, and the post was asking if the prices where going to continue to be high like that. So far though, it's not been a trend - which I'm thankful for. :) It was not a general "Daz prices are always too high" it was a "these prices TODAY (that day) are quite a bit higher and I hope it's not a future trend" - I thought I had made that pretty clear in my OP, but I guess not. :)
Ohh that thread. I read a page or two but most of the posts seemed to have missed the point so I couldn't be bothered slogging through all of it.
The prices that day were a bit higher, but so were the items. Not sure about the texture and the character shape being split or how anyone prices those (though it did have several head morphs) but the hair was absolutely worth the price being a bit higher. It's several models that can be switched between and is the single most useful hair piece I've bought. The bundle itself was also massively cheaper than the individual items - whereas the two Daz bundles that came later were basically the price of the separate items, which I thought was weird (they did become cheap with the release sale, but release sales won't last forever.)
So... a couple of comments...
I knew nothing about DAZ3D, and the Facebook add reached me... and I've spent a good deal of money at this point. Enough to buy a decent budget PC with a core i5 or i7. I don't know how much of that the PA's see. I hope a respectable amount.
Stonemason, I love your work. I understand how an artist prices their work... how long they want to work and what they want to get paid "per hour" for that effort, the costs associated with learning your medium, purchasing the materials to deliver on your medium, packaging your medium. It isn't just sitting down and drawing a picture, right... there is a LOT more to it than that with ANY art. Those art-school textbooks and materials aren't cheap, not to mention tuition.
With that said... If I picked up your models for $.50 which are priced at $50 (which I didn't)... I understand why you might find that frustrating. It is too bad there isn't a real way to differentiate between hobbyists and professionals and charge the hobbyists a price that would make sense for them (and still give you money - money you probably would never see if they were priced out of your items)... while also ensuring that those who are professionals are paying a more reasonable fee. If I were making money at this, the whole equation on what I would be willing to pay for content would change. As it is... I've never paid more than about $15 for any single piece of content - and my biggest carts have been under $50 for everything in them. That is unfortunately, the fact of how I value this content as a consumer. I like it when sets, clothes, characters, are right around $2-$5 each. That is my happy-purchase with no regrets price point. At about $6 or higher, I *really* start asking myself how badly I want whatever I'm looking at, and above $10... I really have to want it.
But I get it... if you're not getting paid enough to make it worth your while, you'll stop making content, and we'll lose as consumers. Finding a balance where you're making enough to keep you wanting to make content while the content is priced so that consumers are willing to buy it - that is the difficulty.
Diva... I don't mind ads on places like YouTube. What I find is that I hit those sites that are ad-serving click-bait... and they're so annoying I install ad-blockers for that... then I am too lazy to turn them off for each individual site.
That is the real problem... bad apples making things worse for everyone.
So... I agree with Ix. :)
Mostly I think it's to do with the small audience and the fact that you're basically getting a commercial licence (for renders, not using the actual models in something.) For a commercial user getting some sort of income the list prices of products are absolutely justified. For hobbyists buying things for fun I agree that the sweet spot is much lower (well for my budget, anyway - maybe there's a huge hoard of people buying all the products at full price and never going near forums.)
Many sites simply sell their software for cheaper if it's personal use only, but not 3D models apparently.
I spend $29 on 2D resources at DesignCuts each month, and they do run the same sort of licence as Daz - no personal option, but it's a ton of content for cheap enough that it doesn't bother me, same as Daz sales.
Also, random thought but I buy tons of video games at $5-10 or often much less - often not even on discount, and a full game usually takes far more time and effort. Funnily enough with all the indie bundles and sales I've wound up buying far more games than I've actually played.
The thing is, I would never in a million years spend $50 on a single model/product, no mater how amazing it was. I would, however, spend $50 in a heartbeat on twelve great models by the same PA. Like this morning, I had about $50 worth of products in my cart, then when the prices went up, I dumped almost all of them, spending only $12 vs the $50 I would have spent, and I will most likely never buy those items unless they go down to that low price again. There are very few items I actually need at this point, so I just shop for things I may want or need at some future time at bargain prices and I now have tons of items I've never actually used. So I'm not going to spend $50 for something that's absolutely amazing but I may never use.
A few people may buy products at $50 a pop, but I bet several hundreds of people would stack their carts with products in the $3.00-$4.00 range, things they would never have normally bought. There is one PA here who has a lot of older products I really like, but their sales are never deep enough so I have never purchased from them except one bundle I bought during March Madness many years ago for about $5.00. Since then, their prices have always been significantly higher than most sale products here and although I really like that PA's quality work, I will never buy at the prices they are offering. Ironman13, on the other hand, often has very steep sales both here and at Rendo, and I now own a huge amount of her products, she's made several hundred dollars from me, so which PA wins in the long run?
