I was surprised to find no one talking about today's sale.  I like the 80% off of the booster items.  Did we loose the 45% off of the vendors' stores?  It seems odd that those aren't discounted today.

I've seen sales without the vendor stores being discounted before, though it's not that common. And when I first started, the discount was usually 50% off, not 45%. I seldom buy from the vendor stores at that discount, unless the vendor is in more than one promo and the discounts stack, (like we saw the past several days.)

But I did like today's promo very much. Got all three "featured" new releases at 80% off. Picked up some "software" in the other promo, too. though the free DO items weren't much incentive for me. (I already had three of the items anyway.) But hey, free is free, and I've been wanting the GenX2 product for quite awhile now.

I've also been looking at that product, but as you say, the freebie selection is low and I'm still hoping for better than 45% off.  There's guides to doing it manually if I really need a morph converted, so I'm in no rush.

I've been fascinated by both how long the gift card sale has been going on, as well as how big the maximum discount is. IIRC, the previous maximum discount was 17%, and that was a 1-day 7% for buying one of the characters and 10% from a punch sale.

My suspicion is that this is an indirect response to the now-locked thread about prices going up in the store on new items. Buying a gift card and using it means that we pay with discounted dollars - but the actual price is unchanged, and the PA still gets 50% of the price indicated. If this is the case, I'd say it is a clever solution. :-)

I have been expecting it to disappear at DAZ midnight every day since it started. I get paid on Wednesday... So I'm pretty sure it will disappear at the changeover tonight, or tomorrow night. lol... but if it doesn't, I may well have to find four more new releases and add another chunk to my store credit.

Yes and those 80% booster new releases can be used with Gift Card sale. So, one main new release to trigger the 80% plus 3 of the new booster releases and you have the 4 new releases needed for 20% off the gift cards

I agree with both of you.  Maybe the higher prices, plus the encryption scare, plus the endless sales just got me tired out, because my cart had 17 items in it for the last 2 months or so.  But I did empty it (none of those items were on sale anymore and I rarely buy anything at MSRP), and spent money over the weekend and bought a new gift card.  If I had it in the budget, I'd have gotten a $1000 gift card this time around.  But alas, I have other things that cost money too.  Like clothing and food and gasoline and electricity...

Kalea is a very nice suprise this morning.

Pro bundle looks good and the offers when buying at least one of the nice "Related Items" (Elephants!) are quite ok.

I thought it was most likely to be Tween Julie released today, but also that she might be pushed back to accomodate making the male, so I'm not that surprised that it was Kalea that turned up today.

I'm really surprised the gift card thing is still going. I was sure it'd end yesterday before the new character came out.

I'm most excited about the elephants today!

I've noticed that Hexagon and Bryce 7 are in the software sale.

Are they worth their sale price and are they easy to use?

I have both and they do have a learning curve, but from what I have heard they aren't getting any updates/ improvements and Hexagon has a tendency to crash easily.

    They're both worth $11 without a doubt.

Ease of use can be subjective (different working styles, brain types, etc), but I'm finding DAZ Studio much more opaque than I did Bryce. But I started with Bryce *cough* years ago, and thus had a younger brain.

Hexagon I know little about. It looked promising (I could do things right away) but I stopped trying to learn it when it became clear it was buggy and an update was unlikely. But now it seems there is an update in the works, so maybe I'll be giving it another shot.

Good to hear there is an update coming, as I like hexagon but lately I've been more prone to using Silo and have been dabbling in Blender which is huge learning curve..so much that it makes my brain hurt and I have to leave it alone for a couple days then come back to it....lol

Blender has a massive learning curve but once I understood the way it does things every other piece of software starts to look inefficient and weirdly designed. Its main advantages to me are that its very well documented in mostly human language, and is regularly updated (it's also eternally free and open source.)

I'll believe an update for Hexagon, Bryce, and/or Carrara when I see it. I bought Carrara 6 months ago after promises of an update, but it's still sitting there, unable to run genesis 3 with it's version 6 manual, which taught me to stick to actively developed software.

That's the best situation, but "neglected in a stable state" is a reasonable alternative. That's how it is with Bryce7 (unless you are a modern Mac user, in which case it is all but unusable) but Hexagon has been left flakey.

One of the mods here mentioned there was an active beta for Hexagon. No discussion of its existence on the Hexagon forum though.

Bryce also doesn't reallly have a good alternative (that I know of at least) so it's pretty good value if that's what you're after (at least I haven't heard any complaints.) Hexagon though has many modeller alternatives, so I would go for something more actively developed personally, though others should of course do as they please.

Does anyone have Carrara and Hexagon and prefer Hexagon? If so, why?

  • People seem to forget that the ONLY reason Daz3d exists is to sell products. This is how they make money.  They are no different than Macy's or any other Department store.

Is this just a general response to the thread title? Seems like part of conversation nobody else is having at the moment.

A friend of mine let me try Hexagon on their computer a few years ago, it ran Vista and was a bit of a pain in the butt anyway. Hexagon crashed more times than a crash test dummy.

Thank you for your replies. I bought both. cheeky I just needed a few opinions to know that I wouldn't make a mistake in buying the programs.

I've worked with Daz for a few years now and, I think I'd like to start creating my own content.

Personally, nothing could be as difficult as learning how to use Blender. I've only just learnt how to use Blender Cycles (mainly for rendering XNALara game models, which I'd love to do in Daz).

    Thanks again laugh

I actually really like Carrara's modeler.

Maybe it's something about how I think, or maybe it's familiarity, but the extrusion/envelope modeling and the general layout/UI for the vertex modeling seems pretty intuitive and straight-forward. There's still a learning curve, but I don't feel like I have to relearn every single movement and idea.

Take a look at my laboratory thread (link in my sig) as we've been doing some stuff with it there.  You can always ask any questions there, too, and someone will be able to help if it's something I haven't figured out yet.

Thank you. I'm looking through the thread now, and I've bookmarked it.

As for Bryce and Hexagon: both are more stable on a 64bit system (or a 32bit system with the 3GB switch in the registry) by running the exe through the free Largeadressaware:
