not really a critcsism as most 3D clothes are stiff like cardboard more an overcompensation maybe?

Thankfully, the wrinkles are from the Bump and Normal maps and can be adjusted. I found removing the Normals or reducing to .25 and knocking the Bump down from 26 to 3-5 was more to my tastes. One thing I noticed with the dress is during simulation there was a lot of pokethrough. While smothing fixed most of the problems, removing self collision resulted in much better results.

I'm more struck by how very old they made Joseph look.

I’m more struck by how very white both characters look, though of course this is a consequence of (a) imitating Medieval and Renaissance artwork, and (b) the overall paucity of Southwest Asian (Middle Eastern) characters in the Daz shop. PAs, you’ve got at least one customer eager to buy more characters that look Arab/Palestinian/Lebanese/Syrian/Assyrian/etc.!

That’s a great suggestion but I know very little about how the modeling actually works (and I have no particular artistic skills). How would I get started? I can kitbash skins, tweak textures, and dial in morphs, of course … but where can I look for guidance on how to kick that up a notch?

Sorry for the shortness of the reply; I'm still a bit sleepy eyed.  There are a number of wonderful tutorials, both narrative and video on how to do different things. I'm a dabbler so I tend to try things out, but unfocused enough not to master anything. I suggest you look for topics on shaders and textures to star with. Hang on a sec, let me fire up Daz to see some things...

Ah, yes. I couldn't remember the name of it....The Translucency Weight slider under surfaces is a quick way to alter pigment.  Generally, the higher the number the darker the skin. Note the results will be different from skin to skin because the base color of the skin varies. You can also play around with the Trans color itself; however, I find this to be rather tricky. Oh, make sure you have your figure highlighted in the surfaces tab.

Start with a skin you like and then dabble with that. Let me see if I can dig up tutorials I've used on the subject.

    I found these helpful:

Using a Genesis 8.1 Shader on a Genesis 8 Figure in Daz Studio for free - YouTube

The best way to change genesis 8.1 skin color ? (darker) - Daz 3D Forums

How to achieve this Skin quality ? - Daz 3D Forums

Jay has done a lot of helpful videos.

Must admit from the little i know of religious art makes me think Marys clothes are very wrinkly would deforce fix them? the set has potential.

I always thought in the art her outfit looked rather unrealistically nice, considering she'd been on basically an extended donkey-back trail ride over dusty/dirty terrain and just gave birth in a barn. =P

Gah! Still not awake enough lol.

Both textures (materials) and shaders are found in the surfaces tab. At the top of the surfaces tab you will see 3 or so other other tabs. The trans weight is under 'editor'.  Note you can also change surface gloss/matt and things like that under the surfaces/editor.  Shaders are listed under 'Presets'.  Play around with them. Dont forget to highlight the object/figure you are working with so that Daz knows where you want the material/shader applied to.  You can mix/match shaders on objects.  I don't have a lot of skin shaders; I tend to use shaders for objects.  For example, I will often change the surface of a wall from say 'wood' to 'brick', for example, to get a different look. But I digress...

Regarding facial structure, that can get a little complicated. Mixing and matching with other assets can be good. However, there are assets that you can buy that will allow you to do more editing. Basically these will give you more options under your shaping tab to change body features. Some of these are very powerful. Other assets just give you the morphs directly to dial into your character.  I like the '200 Plus' series by Zev0.  I've got one each for Gen 3, Gen 8, and Gen 9.

If I can confuse you any further, let me know :-)

    Good luck and happy rendering!

Oh wow, the dress looks SO much better, well done! I0m wishlisting it now, hadn't even considered it before.
Edit: Oooh, the BOOTS in the set though ... rofl ...

Oh man, these are not 'love bites' @Birthstone (https://www.daz3d.com/bs-love-bite-and-bruises-for-genesis-9), are you really not familiar with the technique? These are severe bite marks I'd go get a tetanus shot for asap! And file a restraining order. I wish people would stop confusing 'love' and 'abuse' so much ...

Like the set, but the naming is just plain misleading.

Grounds for an assault charge, some of them.

I do like the hand poses shown here: https://www.daz3d.com/ultimate-hd-poses-dynamic-hands-for-genesis-9 . However, I admit I'd never thought they were that hard. Don't nost people have an easy pose reference model more or less permanently attached to the end of one or other arm?

    Regards,

    Richard

Hand poses are the kinds of products I never appreciated enough until I started to get them.  This one is definitely going into my cart this weekend.

Forgot to mention, I really like the new carrot veg patch by @MartinJFrost, it's a freebie for DAZ+ atm. Been waiting for something like this for ages. I do hope he will create more veg patches!

smiley  my use case for this would be imitating religious icons but maybe slip in an anachronism for the fun of it

The Lyna 9 Bundles are quite interesting.  Great for anyone who likes Cyberpunk.  Time for some renders!

Looooove the looks of Stonemason's new Cyberpunk Kitset. The prop promo images just keep going and going. :)

KuJ Headquarters looks amazing too. Big Sci-Fi spaces are few and far between and the design of it is pretty neutral while also visually interesting.

Aw, man! I'm gonna be spending some $$$ today! I think Lyna looks amazing, and all the sci-fi cyber stuff is definitely up my alley! The Stonemason set?! A thousand times yes! My only regret is that Link is Premier exclusive. I like him a lot. I am Premier, but I can't take the risk of using the Premier-exclusive shapes for any of my long-term characters. Oh well. I can probably morph Lyna enough into a Link lookalike. Overall, I'm quite happy with today's offerings! smiley

I'm giddy about that Stonemason set. It’s like Kitbash3D without all the pain of getting it into DS. More please.

The Cyber Augments are interesting. They are a Daz Original that doesn't show the full set on any male characters, so I'm assuming they only do well on female shapes.

they work fine on male characters.

Here's hoping a set of cyber legs is next. Imagine trying to carry around all the extra weight of those augmented parts with normal legs. At least the set has spinal reinforcement...

I'm not spending money to find out of that's true.

Understandable.  Here is a render with all of the augments and emissives, and a render with the LIE details (which add a metallic/plastic cast to the skin.

  • Even stingy as I've been lately, the moment I saw https://www.daz3d.com/cyberpunk-kitset the wallet came out. Stonemason's sets are amazing, and I find myself pulling them apart to kitbash anyway or hiding half the stuff to make it into a vignette. This takes all the trouble out of it. I love it so much!

Also, yes, there's nothing in the cyber augments that would make them look weird on a female. It's not agrafted add-on, they are literally morphs directly on the figure, and the textures are applie via LIE. No geoshells, no clipping, work with literally every G9 and every scrap of clothing you can put over it. That was a very smart idea. Great purchase.

  • One thing to note if you're using both the augments and the LIE details is that if you're using the emissive geoshells on both, you'll need to tweak the offset on one of them in order for both sets of emissives to show up right. I think they're both dialed in at 0.025 by default, so just changing one to 0.02 is enough.

I don’t really care about cyberpunk, but Lyna has plenty of other applications. I bought the character and HD add-on and the bundle. Here she is dancing in the Kingdom of Marrakesh wearing the still-new Middle East Desert Outfit and playing the tambourine from the legacy Play Like an Egyptian set. The hair is XYZ Xia which I cannot find in the store now, and the lighting is one of the Skies of iRadiance - Sunny Skies. I also played around a little with a dForce wind node, which I haven’t really done before. Anyway, pretty happy with how this character seems to fit in with my ancient SW Asia settings. No postwork on this, just a quick render to appreciate the new character.
