  • I shared this on the Michael and Friends thread, but I thought I'd share here too :)

It's Darius 6 with some custom morphs on the face and wearing Mestophales' Rapier armor. Added lens flares in post.

  • Having fun using Iray materials to try and make older and long gone content look better. Natu 3.1 by Chocolate, Cyber Natu outfit, and a bunch of the Iray materials and DA's real lights...

The way I have been doing it is.

Click on the surface you want to add snow to.

Double Click on the Snow Shell Prop.

In the scene tab drill down throught the item you have chosen and highlight the Snow shell.

Choose the Snow Shader Preset you want and double click on it.

That should be it then you can go into the shader and play with the parameters.

...apologies for the late response.  Followed your steps and absolutely perfect.

Also love your storm tossed ship.

Thank you, just a bit of fun

...can't wait to get this scene done now.

  • This is V7/Zoe in the Public Indoor Pool

I really like the default lighting that comes with the pool. Splash modeled in Blender.

Great interplay of the light and shadows.

    No problem. :)

  • This one got me a bit puzzled as to Vicky's skin color considering my previous render.

The couch and pose are a freebie I will be uploading once I have had some sleep, so consider this a preview.

    Cheers.

Was wondering if I could pull off bark with my shaders... I think so!

Although it highlights a limitation of the shader -- if you extend one axis, the shader is oriented independently of the body shape. So the bark is striated vertically whether along the torso or across the arms.

    ...that's really cool.

Speaking of shaders finally have Let it Snow working.

Here's a test using Stonemason's After the War and a few other buildings.

I really love how IRay lets me easily easily turn anything into a light for the scene. Much more useful than the SSS cheats in 3Delight.

V4 with Hampton hair, Saunders Steampunk Tavern, DzFire's Real Lights for Iray,  Aiko3 ponytail(on the pony of course)

    Alfaseed/Aeon Soul's 110.1

Wish I had more than two wood shaders, but hopefully I can get some eventually.

Added: Pony is not a character from the show, comic or any known toy despite any similarities of design.

Clarify please...because you can turn any surface in 3Delight into a light.  It is done with an AreaLight shader which has nothing to do with SSS in any way.

I don't know what SSS has to do with emitting light, but my experience with arealights was results that took as long as Iray renders for worse results. Ugh.

(Though maybe I should take another stab at them, now that I've had 6 months of experience since last time)

There are tricks to making them work better...not saying it's not harder to get nice results, than it is in Iray, but it IS possible.

Huh, must be something I missed while I was away. Or something I never found. I was thinking of the effect of making it seem like something is glowing by ambient through SSS. Like Design Anvil's older glowing eyes product where the eyes have ambient and SSS along with SSS in the face material to make the color of the eyes appear around them.

The ambient trick was outdated about 4 or 5 versions of 3DL ago (maybe longer).  In other words, long before arealights were in Studio.  But an arealight is essentially the same as the Iray mesh light and has been in 3DL for quite some time.  Several years ago, omnifreaker released an arealight shader for Studio...but for some reason it never really caught on. One of the problems with arealights (mesh lights) in 3DL, in Studio is that they are very finicky (it's the shader used) and require fairly high samples to make smooth.  But the recent improvements (since 3DL 10...current version is 12) have increased the speed and with a more 'modern' shader, reduced the number of samples required/made them less finicky.

The mesh lights in Iray ARE easier to set up/use, but that's more because they are using a much more modern implementation/streamlined UI, not because they are something that 3DL is lacking.  The big difference between them, at the user level, is that Iray's controls are based on 'real world' data (luminous flux, etc) where as 3DL's version is not (yeah, there's a bit more 'under the hood' technical details).

I should poke at meshlights again. It'd be nice to have more realistic lighting without having to lose a lot of what I like about 3DL.

Wish I knew what I did but I can't seem to recreate it. On that day I had tried all my light skins and they all turned out grey or purply and now they all look normal...

I haven't been inspired lately, but I've finally got round to finishing something!

I like dramatic lighting in case anyone couldn't tell

Also I've taken to using canvases to render out an exr in addition to the png and doing all sorts of fun stuff with it. I highly recomend it. Canvases are super useful for all sorts of things

    wow... that is stunning!

I've been mostly lurking in this thread for awhile, but I've never posted one of my Iray renders.  I thought I would share my latest one.  Clicking on the image should take you to my gallery page for full size image and story premise.  Okay, so that didn't work.  Clicking on image just shows full size.  Hopefully, I got it right this time.

    Seems to have worked. Bravo!
