That's still 4-6 times worth (or more) of monthly rent for most of us here.

I wish I lived where you do. $500 a month here in the Seattle area is a garbage can. With no lid. Plus utilities. ;)
I think Mec4D's were Super-clicked, not regular (manufacturer over-clocked) - I imagine that pushed the price up a bit.
Quite possibly, though, I haven't seen one for more than $1300, from the usual suspects, and the price that is more common is between $999 and $1100.
Of course in the UK it is likely to be a little higher. :)
Amazon UK has them between 800 and 900 pounds.
Get thee behind me Spooky

Tell me about it. I moved from central PA to western WA 10 years ago, which doubled the cost of housing.
I'm now about to move to the Bay Area... doubling the cost of housing again...

HAH... try living in Redwood City where Google is setting up shop where 1 bedrooms are going for $3000.00 a month PLUS utilities!
Thanks guys
ok here are the specifications
I purchased the EVGA Titans X 12 GB Super-clocked for $2,139.98 each $1,069.99 NO TAX by Tiger Direct . com
they are out of stock everywhere else plus other stores charging $144 tax for both
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9687834&CatId=7387
I installed one Titan X first to see the difference and to tell you the truth one Titan X SC did not made much difference in the view-port than my old GTX 760 2GB the rendering time was 3 times faster I was like what? but after I added the second one the game changed totally
I like the fact that the second card use only 5% power when not in use and zero memory
When rendering in realtime I put the fans on max as the 2 cards generate a heat wave you can blow-dry your hair with lol I need to install additional fan to blow some hair between them as the top card get slight hotter than the lower , I have 5 fans and water cooling for the main processor but still, rendering push everything to max .
I run the cards on
Intel Core i7-4820K @3.70 Ghz 10MB cache
RAM: 24 GB
Power Supply : 950 W ( going to update to 1200W soon and additional 12GB RAM ) for better performance as I am for plan to add one more Titan X in the near future .
I love how fast my Photoshop CC 2014 running now with the new GPU, image and video editing is soooo fast and other programs .
I spend over 6K on my workstation (Wacom Cintiq 22 HD Touch&Pen; monitor +Asus 32 inch included )since last year and beside the better power supply I am done for now
I will make other tests soon with full figures, the viewport is sensitive to filters like bloom filter it slow down the realtime movements but emission shaders working fine .. I working always with wire frame viewport and using the the other small view port for updates as I don't need it to be full size and use only one card for that , most important for me is the final rendering time where I switch to both cards
so the last video was just show off to see how the both cards perform in DS
another thing is when I am running open other program in the same time like PS the real-time performance drop dramatically for that
also my Octane 1.52 does not working with TITAN X as it don't recognize the CUDAs on the new architecture and I am not going to update to version 2 so good bye OTOY for now.
What about $5 per cup of coffee , for $500 dollars you don't even get a garage here

Funny enough, that's where we're hoping to find a place. A tiny place. A tiiiiiiiny place.
mmph
On the Graphics Card discussion, it is worth note that having to render using CPU (as I am doing) is perfectly good if that is what you have to work with. That is the real power of Iray IMHO, you can use it either way with success. If you have, can get, can afford a nice graphics cards and want more speed and performance, then by all means get another card (If and when I can I probably will) but I've been rendering promos, texturing/surfacing in Iray, etc all using CPU Only and have gotten very good results.
There have been some things I had to do though to get my Computer, DS, Iray all playing nicely and to avoid too much lag while things were rendering. (Though possibly said elsewhere I thought it was worth adding the things here in case they haven't been mentioned)
1. After opening DS, I switched my core usage for DS so I can do other things while rendering. In my case I have a 6 core, I went and did Ctrl + Alt + Delete and went to Task Manager and then Processes. selected DS, Right Clicked on it, went to Set Affinity, and then just unchecked the bottom two cores. I was told there was a script for this for DS as well but I don't have it so if that link hasn't been shared in here, maybe someone could share it.
2. When working within DAZ Studio on a scene for Iray, while adding my pieces to the scene and positioning them etc I switch the Iray viewport (where you can see the results or tweak the surfaces for Iray) to any of the other modes (Texture Shaded etc) I found I had lag when leaving that in "Iray" view and moving things around. So I've been loading an item, possibly adjusting the surface for Iray with that window, then flipping it to a different mode, positioning the piece and moving on to the next and starting that process over on the next piece or switching out of that mode, loading everything, posing, setting the scene and elements, and then doing all the surfaces at one time. Kinda depending on how many surfaces or pieces I had and whether I wanted to do them all at one time or one at a time.
I found doing those two things that I've not had too many issues, no crashes, and my computer overall has been performing fine and the renders are coming out fine as well :) Many probably all ready new that but thought for someone coming in new to the thread or for those that are doing CPU and having issues that the info might come in handy :)
of course you will get the same results no matter you render with CPU or any other cards, I don't understand why the topic about , it seems like other people don't understand the technical side here and subject of matter in first place . With better hardware you win only the rendering time and nothing else and that is all about ..
The Camera don't take pictures.. You do ;)
V6 Iray skin test 2
+1 cath
This is where daz gets another good point for PRODUCTIVITY. Speeding up things allow to gain much time for:
- render
- learn
- preview
which in the end of the day, is A LOT. Money is not a problem here. Choosing is. A better tool is to put in front its real usage. It is not wasting money, it is earning more by investing better ;-)
And for that, even If I'm currently in a sh*tty situation, I know that to build the 300 or 400 renders that I have to do for my project, a good nvidia card will help a lot! My goal: GTX 980 Ti (almost same perf than titan X but 6gb). Your rig/video will help me a lot to decide if it is worth (or go down 980gtx/970gtx)
Back to our thread, May I insist Cath about what I asked in the previous page? You are one off the best provider here, I'll understand if you don't have the time to do it.
(my previous msg:
thank a lot for this interesting video that gives me an idea how to accelerate my workflow.
But I must admit that the car is not really a big power eater in this scene example.
Could you please enlighten us with another (shorter) video to see iray in action with a model (V6/M6) and a more complex outfit and some (power eater) hair?
that’ll help many of us to see a power station in action. (and gain some time making the renders)
thx in advance.
In addition to this, I’d like to add my 2c about titan price.
If you don’t need the 12GB, you can go to the 6GB 980 Ti which gives pretty much the same results for almost half the price! And 6GB is enough for most of us wink
)
You don't have to work with everything in full screen mode in Win 8.1, it also has a "normal" user interface where you work exactly like in Win 7. I've been running Win 8.* since it was first released without ever using the full screen mode, other than when making a search for "apps", i.e. installed software, that I didn't have shortcuts to from the desktop.
Another tryout;
not so good this timle :(
I would have called it 'the prisoner',
but i dont like the outcome :(
any tips would be great, if possible.
Well said, I answered you already in my early reply, I will do the test soon as well you can check on my Google + page or YouTube in the near future :) will sent you PM when it is ready
1. You might try adjusting the light values down a little and then adjusting the tonemapper.
2. An environment map may help, with both speed and eliminating some noise, but night maps are difficult to find.
3. Some shader adjustment might help as well. Most of your textures appear to be Poser Materials that you let Iray autoconvert and that is not going to work as well as the auto convert from DS 3Delight presets, and definitely not as well as tweaking the shaders yourself.
Not bad at all ! I would go for some bloom filter here with all the lights to give it some atmosphere .. would be really cool
Can we please remind the members posting to this thread that the DAZ 3D Forum TOS, Bullet Point #2 states
This thread is primarily designed as a render thread which also contains hints and tips,
I think it looks pretty good.
Personally I would try pulling the camera in closer a bit, to focus the viewers attention on the subject. Right now there is so much that it is hard to make out the story at hand.
If you do zoom in a bit, try upping the reflectivity on some of the surfaces. This way the surrounding work isn't lost, but alludes to the wider scene at hand.
Very impressive. Nicely done. I'd love to know what number of iterations you went to and how long it took?
Just jumping in with a render...
Wow that is really nice :)
Since we are talking about hardware as well...
I am about to pull the trigger on a new laptop. In the next 24 to 48 hours.
I know, laptop bad, but that's what I need to use when I am traveling or can't sit at my desk any longer.
What I am planning on is this (unless someone spots a serious misstep):
Alienware 17
i7-4710 HQ
16 GB RAM
GeForce GTX 980M (4 GB)
512 GB SSD + 1 TB
It was between this and the ASUS ROG G751JY-DH72X.
I am leaning towards the Alienware because I have had a pretty good history with Dell support. And the Asus support is a bit of an unknown to me.
Just to throw a monkey into the works for you. http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y50-touch/?sb=:000001C9:00014C2C: is the newer model of the laptop I have (I have the 860M with 4GB and no touch screen.).
Note that mobile graphics cards have half the cores of a desktop card. This should also save you enough money, to pay for half a desktop machine. LOL.
@legionair
your name sounds french (me too ;-) )
I have this laptop....for 3.5 years, and still up to date (with a i7 3820). It always goes with me as a moving desk ;-)
the bad side is that mine is radeon one, too bad for iray.
Alienware is expensive but according to my experience reliable with high quality. you can't go wrong especially with the 980 wich has many cuda cores (but less than the desktop one 980gtx), it is closer to the 970gtx
BTW, just popping back in to suggest that if people really want to discuss GPUs you could use this thread.
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/56583/
Plus there is also this thread, where people are comparing Benchmarks
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/53771/
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-980m/specifications
980m has 1536 cuda (gtx has a 2048) but the clocks are lower
I would never go again for Asus laptop, the last powerful Asus Republic of Games diet after 1 and half year while abusing it by rendering with GPU too often .. literately melted and it has double separate cooling for GPU and CPU .. in short it was waste of money and I learned my lesson
your new specs seems promising , nice choice !
do you know that msi and alienware offer an option to use an EXTERN GPU? that is a solution for you, knowing that your laptop can have a possibility to "upgrade" (but yes, expensive solution)
Mud Wrestling
I'm playing with the Iray Decal feature for the mud on the model and swimsuit.

Edited to add: No offense meant to my big girl by coating her in mud. She was the normal skinny G2F when I applied the decal. I wanted to see if the decal would stick to her when I morphed her. It did. I thought she was beautiful, so I kept her with that morph. (Great work on those BBG morphs SY!).
