Bloom filter, Vignetting, Depth of Field on camera, Emitters, HDR, even MS Paint for postproduction...

Too much bloom perhaps? It's a bit distracting.

Would be cool to see them making eye contact...
bloom needs to be "much" for the effect being noticeable.
anyway, don't care so much about that, that's why I hate doing full scenes, someone will complain soon or later.
btw I did a console game on Sketchup, maybe someone will complaint about the design too...

Wasn't complaining, just offering thoughts for improvement.

Excellent, there's a real sense of a personality in this render.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

The untouched version of a very postworked image I'm about to stick in my gallery.

I thought the face shape made a good 17th century Dutch person.

Thank you! I spent a lot of time messing with the eyes to make them look nice, so I guess it was worth it :)

Here's another one I did today, similar pose but different figure and lighting.

Here's one using The Pool House with V6. I tried using it with V7, but for some reason it kept making the program crash.

What can I do to make this scene look more realistic?

You need more dramatic lighting in the scene, with highlights and shadows, instead of just shadows. So instead of having the sun shine from the right, which I assume is the default setting of 0 degrees dome rotation, try rotating the dome to 45 degrees (= at an angle from the right) or 135 degrees (= at an angle from the left) to get more sunlight into your scene.

Take a look at your shader settings, you have too much of something going on there, it could be the shader roughness values or bump or even displacement. Many of Stonemason's old poser models have textures that are rough. Is this one of those?

I myself had to work on the textures for this one, in this case it was only to tone down the colors:

    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/viewreply/844164/

If I were you I would try to experiment with a newer model that has textures for DAZ Studio (3Delight) until you acquire more knowledge of the settings.

I think the scene might look more realistic if you change the tone-mapping to lower the brightness with less exposure. (Or lower the brightness in postwork.) I tried that quickly and roughly on my monitor settings and the image looked "realer" to me.

Thanks for the advice tomtom.w, ndelphi, and Jack_238

Take away points and additional questions:

    1. I will try adjusting the lighting to create a more interesting play between light and dark. My problem here is that
I am using a skyplane (Skies of Economy rendered in 3Delight and placed on a plane) so have to figure out a good
sun dial position then make a cloud render in 3Delight that matches. I might just use Carrara for sky gen since I can
set azimuth and elevation in it.

I played with the skydome in iray (with the help of Val Cameron's tutorials) but it is too annoying to bother. It would
be awesome if they could create an inner transparent dome that you could place your sky map on and an outer dome
for the HDRI to light the scene but ignore the inner dome texture and geometry and the inner dome has it's own gain
    and contrast settings.

Is there a way to parent the sky plane to remain perpendicular to the camera?
How do I determine the size in pixels of the plane, so I can match it to the 7680x4800px sky image I am rendering to
    place on the plane?

I made the plane by choosing a plane primitive at 200m with 10 divisions on object center of orientation with an x positive
axis. I then scaled the y dimension to 160%.

    2. I did over amp the bump on the ground just to see what effect it might have.

It is a Daz Original with NO Readme (Daz doc 2093) but the texrtures are in a folder called Hoth and Castleguarde was
done by LisaB back in 2004. Yes it is very old and to get the most out of it I will have to make new materials and displacement
for it, but first I want to see what I can get from the base.

    3. I will try a different tone mapping when playing with the sun. I am trying to avoid doing photoshop to it at this point. I want to
see what can be done with the tool at hand. I was inspired by Phil Wilkes advanced rendering tutorial for carrara where he took
base carrara models and made them look 999% better.

Hey guys and gals, there's a contest going on in the DAZ Studio-Iray group over at DeviantArt themed "God(ess) and Pet". If you havn't heard from that group yet, come check it out, some cool stuff's to be found there including renders, tutorials and resources. Currently held only inside DeviantArt, future contests will be more open, especially for prices. :)

Nothing fancy, but needed an Ankh for a scene, couldn't find a free one worth anything, made my own.

I'm wondering if there'd be a market for 'random props' in the Daz store... I have a number of items I've put together for scenes. And even some basic additional primitives (open cylinders, pipes, etc) might be useful for folks.

Wondering if somebody can lend me a hand ... Cath (Mec4d) had mentioned on part 2 (or something) of this thread that she'd be releasing a free SSS shader preset. I haven't been able to find it anywhere. Has it already been released, and if so, where can I find it?

btw, I have my own SSS shader collection, but are not realistic, for me it's ok because I'm more on the semirealistic/anime*ish figures...

I have really loved your shaders as you've been showing them. Will they be available at any time?
