Tests on Windows 10 Technical Preview

Hello,
I don't really know where this post, but I guessed here would probably be the place.
I am currently working under Window 10 technical preview to beta-test a few products for my clients. And since it was installed, I fired DIM and installed everything.
For DAZ Studio, so far it installed and worked properly. No problems encountered, and the database seems to work perfectly with every content I possess, except the DAZ Horse 2's unicorn addon where it loads just a morphed horse instead of a unicorn. I am currently looking into that program.
The renders are of equal quality as those I obtain under Windows 7, so no complaints. Daz Infinito addon works fine too. Photoshop bridge is working correctly (I own Photoshop CC) and so there's no problem in that area.
I didn't finish to test everything, but DAZ loads seemingly faster (for the same hardware) than in Windows 7, too bad I didn't thought of getting the chrono for W7, but it might be just an impression, I'll further my testing. DAZ Studio freeze a few seconds after being changed from one Desktop to the other (W10 allows you to have multiple desktop even if you have only 1 screen) but it might be due to my PC's perfs, there too, if this interest someone, I can further that.
After some testing and fresh installs, I found out that Carrara still hates me so I couldn't do a single test about it. Ever since I brought that product it's nothing but regrets anyways, I brought the 8.5 hopping it be better, but to no avail, the game Carrara.exe appears in the Task Manager for a split second, and disappear. I thought that DIM would manage to make that problem disappear, but ever since I got it, it has never ever worked on any machine from W7 to W8.1 passing by W8, and it doesn't work better in W10.
That said, if you want me to verify an addon or something, I can provide you with a video record of how this addon works (given that I have it) so that you can see if it's working as you want or not.
So far, good surprise to see it perfectly works,
Ukyuu.

Good news. I'm looking at Windows 10 as a potential upgrade, I'm currently using Windows 7. The kindergarten look of Windows 8 was rather off-putting, amongst other nuisances like click-dragging to close windows and that horrible sidebar. At least Windows 10 looks functionally similar, and gives me the option to have a proper start menu without those silly Live tiles taking up half the screen.
Any idea how well it works across dual or more monitors? I tend to use Daz Studio in a dual screen format myself.
Thanks for the post - I'm fairly likely to jump from Win7 to Win10, knowing that DS seems to work is one less thing to stress over...!
:coolsmile:
that is nice to know!
As a start, let me say that Desktops are kind of special in Windows 10 compared to other windows as they are duplicate of your primary desktop, and thus, you can have 10, with different applications running in each desktop, even if you have only 1 screen. Each desktop display only what's assigned to it.
About dual monitors, so far it doesn't has any problems. But I have yet to understand how to assign a particular desktop to a specific screen, (if I understood right and it's possible at all) expect the same slight freeze time if you change it from one desktop to the other. If you'd like sreenshots of W10 working with DAZ Studio or a video, I can do that this weekend.
I was considering testing Crazy Talk and iClone as I have heard they don't work all that well on W10 and wanted to see for myself about that, but when I saw the price of each, I decided not to.
@TroutFace : If you have any other software that worries you, I can test them. I am sent quite a lot of applications, perhaps I have tested the others that you worry about?
A few screenshots of W10.
can you try carrara 8.5?
when i buy my next desktop, it will be for carrara animation work
thank you.
and Happy Birthday!! :)
My biggest complaint with W10 is onedrive.It's set start automatically, and to sync Documents, Pictures, and Public folders as default.That means for us Daz Studio users, it will try to sync many GB of data.For me, my content folder in Public is over 100GB, all my work goes into Documents or Pictures.Needless to say, if your internet connection is metered or limited, it won't be hard to make a very big bill or no internet for the rest of the month.This can be changed, but I couldn't get it to stop re-adding Documents to the sync.When I did remove Public and Pictures from the sync, it warned me that it would also delete the files locally. I wasn't to happy about that feature either. I had to copy everything to a new drive and disconnect the drive to be sure onedrive wouldn't delete all my art.
@Misty Whisky :
Thank you for the Happy Birthday, Misty Whisky. Unfortunately, ever since I brought Carrara 8, and then 8.5, I have never managed to make them work, they crash after a split second of apparition in the task manager. I regret ever buying these two products who just don't want to install properly on my computers (tried on W7,W8.1 and W10 fresh installs, but it always does the same).
@Icecrmn:
Actually, there is an option for what’s going to be synch or not, it’s not easy to reach, I’ll try to make you a photo about how to set it up. As for limited connections, in W10’s parameters, you have something about that to limit the up&Down;! I’ll find it out and make a screenshot.
I found the sync settings, and yes, they were buried :( .I would think MS could have let the user have more control over that setup during install rather than the current set of defaults.A simple set of check boxes asking if I want to use onedrive , and if so what folders I want to sync would have been a bit more friendly.I don't use cloud storage, so I would much rather have the option to disable it completely.
i have carrara on win7 with DS 4.6 and the valentina CMS. it works on my win7 when the general preference is not set to dual monitor mode.
glad its good so far but W10 is still beta and anything can happen between now and the official release.
@Icecrmn:
Actually, it is very possible that on the final release OneDrive will not be installed at all. The Technical Preview has features that will be made optional, or even paid later on, so I don't quite know about which will be which later on.
On the latest preview (that of W8) it was also like that. It made some of us beta-testers nut-crazy. For the actual latest W10 Tech Prev, the Onedrive is only set to fetch from the onedrive, and create a special folder for itself, so it doesn't upload / download anything from any other side.
@Misty Whisky:
Unfortunately, I paid the pro version only to never be able to use it. I don't know why, and it's extremely flustering, but it has never worked for me. I was willing to get a refund at first then I decided not to, since I guess that it's my loss to have brought the 8.5 pro when the 8 never worked. So I'd be glad to do the tests, however, I'm afraid it's just impossible, they won't work for me, and I'm resigned to that.

@StratDragon:
I will post any issue related to DAZ Studio & W10. I'll keep an eye on it, and if there's anything I'll post & report it to DAZ too. Chances are that it's not going to go wrong, but yes, it can change. I just thought that it might be good to tell people that so far, it works.

See but that's the thing, MS said long ago that they were working to have all storage cloud-oriented.
Not to sound like a conspiracy nut, but companies like MS are deliberately turning away from privacy more and more to monitor your content so they have a better idea on what to sell you and to take action against those obtaining illegal/pirated content.
True, however, they went back on that. On the Technical Preview some features are forced in to make the beta-testers test what they need to be tested under all conditions possible, it is not indicative that this feature will be kept and implemented in the final version.

Yeah, they went back on it because people raised a stink about it. So, while what you say will probably hold true for the time-being, the fact that they have the ability to do this will inevitably become standard in future developments.
Again, I'm not trying to sound like a big-brother-nut, I'm just saying that as these new developments progress it's probably much easier on yourself not to get too comfortable with the idea of privacy or sync-less data storage for much longer.
Ukyuu, did you install Carrara as Administrator, using the Admin account? I had a similar problem when I installed it from my 'workinh' account, even though I used the admin password. Only when I installed it via the Admin account, it worked, also for the working account.
I have a single account on my computer, it has the administrator rights. I use a right-click as admin on the DIM to install carrara, and it just frigging don't want to work. I've been trying stand-alone and I have the UAC on that elevates the application, and it still don't want to work, it's nearly nerve-wracking. Plus just like Daz, uninstalling it leaves a lot of garbage in the computer that make it nearly impossible to re-install it from scratch unless you damn re-install a fresh windows all together.
@RCDeschene :
True enough.
Tech advances, the web's use change, yet our laws are horribly laggy to regulate things all around, and it's all so more difficult that politics have frontiers that the Internet don't know about, so cloud-storage is a big issue in the fact that god know what country will accuse you of what due to the data transiting by its frontier. So for now, I am myself rather wary of such type of storage.
agreed, but you never truly know.
and remember W10 will be free to all users of Win7, Win 8, and Win 8.1 for the life of the computer for one year once it's released

I'll wait and see about the free part. I didn't get anything.
Nothing to get yet. The official release which is still slated "late 2015" so nothing for free until then, even at the earliest.

As discussed in that thread, it's not clear whether it will be a free upgrade that can be used any time in the first year, or if it's going to be adopting a ransom-ware model and the first year will be free after which you will have to pay.
Well, until further news I guess there's nothing we can do.
My thread was more to say that so far, W10 seems to work well with DAZ Studio, since I had it on hands, and had done the test. All the addons I have works too. Including Infinito version 1, which was a relief for me. I guessed other people might want to know about this.
...as I understand Win 10 desktop version still includes some of those ugly Win 8 elements. I'll continue keeping tabs on development and reading user reports on a couple technical journal sites before saying yea or nay. Still have 5 years for Win7 so in no hurry to potentially screw things up.
..ahh just one more fault.
Never liked the way MS "assumes" you want "such and such" annoying features OOTB. Things like One Drive and Sync should be an option one can turn on if they want not have to figure out where and how to turn off if you don't. Hated that with 'Clippy" in MS Office.
As to C8.5, had no issue installing and running it on Win7.
I am trying out Windows 10. I find out netflix and Windows 10 do not like each other. I can watch streaming by convincing netflix I am using a different version of Windows.
I have no problem with Netflix, but I am using Chrome 64 bits, so it might be why.
@Kyoto Kid:
Well, many people tells me they have no issues with 8.5. God know why it just hate my guts and not others' ones. I've tried every damn solution I could find, but it has never worked. I feel like I've been spending $$ in the wind with this software, it's a big major let down for me, it's the first time that I was that angry against DAZ 3D, through I know they're not telling Carrara to hate me, but well. I'm super-satisfied with all the rest through, as DAZ Studio : works and so does Hexagon.

This OneDrive thing sounds like it'll be a nuisance though. I don't use Cloud storage, nor do I particularly like the idea of Cloud storage. I'm an old fashioned sort that likes data somewhere local rather than sitting on someone else's hard drive. If I need to back things up, I have a lovely Blu-Ray writer capable of filing a BD-R with gigabytes of data.
I'm hoping there's a way to kill it before it starts copying all of my precious files online.
...well from the SS provided, looks like the Start menu still has that nauseating looking tiled UI.
I'd be totally happy with just a simple "XP" or "Win7 Basic" looking desktop and menus.
...and I totally agree on cloud storage. It should be an option if you want it not an automatic bug...er...feature forced on you. Hopefully that will be something that goes to the Windows App store before the official release rather than being included as part of the OS. I have a nice 1 TB external for backup purposes.
Read a report yesterday morning that mentioned cloud storage is not as invulnerable to hacks as its purveyors tell you it is.
Cool screenies.. looking great! :coolsmile:
The only other apps I care about are music software - digital audio workstations (DAWs).. Tracktion,Sonar X3, and Sony Acid Music Studio. Pretty niche-y stuff, I'm afraid. But thanks for the offer! :cheese:
