Buhahaha they took a long time the one with the city mayhem took 18 hours. I just installed 4.8 time to git into some iray I rekon
18 hours - wow!!
You should like Iray, a lot of what you have learned for Lux with be more or less transferable. Of course when the new version of Reality/Lux comes out, Lux will be A LOT faster!
I know exiting times to be a 3D artist.. I asked a question before to get some good iray settings? I fired up a character no settings it was lightning fast
Cool hey man I got me an Asus G751JY-DH73 laptop last week is there a thread with iray setting? or are they just scattered all over the place?
My new laptop has a GTX 970M (6Gb) with the same CPU, 32Gb RAM, and a 512Gb SSD, the speed is fantastic with Iray (and downright amazing with Octane). So your new rig with the 980M should be REALLY fast!!
Unfortunately a lot of the settings are a bit scattered, The Iray render threads have a lot of good info, and the Iray skin settings thread is quite good as well.
Cool I will have to scavenge. I was not really paying attention since I had taken a 5 month break after dropping my external with alot of content rebuilt... Then got commissions (along with some overtime paid for this beast!) and dont bother with DIM or betas The reason I can produce like I do is 2 machines I start them on this and let them run on the tower @ home then I refine them with the brush and very light set PS blurring tool. The tower never runs hot so I can queue render with lux
Sum mo' Reality / lux stuff I am reaaally used to how the interface works and get the desired results... Nothing takes under 5 to 6 hours using 4 due to the SSS setting for skin but they do look alot less flat

I just wanted to say that I think your work is getting way better. I'm really liking it.

Thanks man but I have to credit the improvements to Paolo & reality 4. I am really looking forward to R4.1 & Lux 5.1 cause as you can see I am really comfortable with the interface and knowing results I will get and count on them. The drawback until then is much longer render times. Interesting test today just rendering a figure in iray on the new laptop with the 4g card much faster then my 32G tower with my 2G amd firepro W5000. I suppose if i apply myself i can learn iray like I did with 3dL & Reality.. As i said on a few occasions it's an exiting time to be in 3d art.. The quality is bringing killer commissions business. Between that and working some overtime financed the new asus machine! It was time to change the 3 1/2 yr old HP machine which is now serving as an entertainment center.
Nothing special, just more messing around with Iray and shaders. I liked the results so I thought I would share it (also posted in the Iray render thread). Custom figure/textures using V6 HD, Georgia Hair, and the Pixar HDRI. The render took about 10 min. (95% convergence), without the hair it took less than 2 min.
My 1st experiences with iray were less then desirable could not get skin to look good. Cause of the scaling i do you can see the mesh joints on larger scaled models. If i try a a large scene with multi characters (like the one shown) nothing happens render never gets going. UE is faster but it still UE. Think meez gonna stick it with reality / lux. Specially with whats a comin' Some renders take longer for now but my machines can handle it.. I still managed to squeeze approx 80 renders I started using R4 in April...

Great renders Bob - I like the mats/shaders. Too bad Iray didn't work for you, but it shouldn't be too much longer before the faster version of Reality/Lux is available.
Experimenting with shaders and low/dramatic lighting and in Iray. I'm also very happy with the hair (Vida hair from here), it renders extremely well in both Octane and Iray.
This one definitely needs to be viewed at full resolution to appreciate the lighting and shaders. At the reduced forum resolution it looks terrible (not that it's a really great render, but it just doesn't look nearly as good).
Quick test to see the effect of the normal maps of EArkhams ZWorld Highway Culverts in Octane Render for DAZ Studio v1.2
And also to have a good look at my brand new ESCoRT FAV by DZFire of course : )
I didn't do much to tweak the textures, most of them are as imported by the plug in, but I did remove the diffuse maps for the ground planes and the rocks after linking their normal maps.
At long last there is a new (beta) version of the DAZ Studio Octane plugin, so maybe this thread will come alive again?
Until all the bugs are ironed out I'll be using v1.2 though, and, aside from not having displacement, it still serves me quite well.
Here's the final version of that DzFire and E-Arkham image, hope you like it.
Cheers!
I am still playing with rendering hair in Octane Render for Carrara, here is my latest. I can now vary the colours in the hair following the latest update.

Phil, your hair is looking really fantastic now! I'm going to have to start working with hair in Carrara more now that the Octane plugin supports it!
Rendered in DS Pro 4.8 with Iray, and light with the Pixar Campus HDRI (also used for the far background). The character is a custom V6 character with a bit of Ysabeau 6 dialed in as well.
As usual, be sure to view at full resolution to see the great details.
Looking good man im starting to play with Iray a bit its fast on my new nvidia laptop having said that Paolo posted a demo video of the upcoming fast lux today so its definitely in the works..

...just saw that myself and was quite impressed.
So apparently the acceleration being talked about will be handled through Reality 4.1 as the test still used Lux 1.3 and Paolo's system has two pre-Sandy Bridge 6 core Xeons that also do not have AVX (same generation as my i7 and pretty close to the same specs save for the extra cores).
So basically, those render times I was getting of 13 hrs on average at about 50 % convergence would be pared down to about an hour twenty which brings it in line with the times I'm seeing with Iray for a large complex scene like the one with the girls at the bus stop.
Actually I thought that too but knowing Reality lux like I do he was using lux 1.31 to demo the slow version then prolly did not mention he was changing to 1.5 for the faster part I just know from being part of that community. Hence the wait for bugs in lux 1.5 to be ironed out..
My tests in iray so far is this scene *nudity* http://fav.me/d8v165b I let run for approx 18 hours took 17 minutes with iray using my asus laptop but was still noisy then learned that you can extend times or take the time limit off so having done that another that took 8 plus in lux would of taken around 2 with iray.. Obviously with the new lux that wont be as much as an issue and I know the interface well. In iray I guess one uses the DS surface tabs to make adjustments? There are so many settings I find it a bit confusing. Since I have not used 3DL in years..

I am really loving the ability to render Carrara Hair in Octane!!

Outstanding hair Phil!!!

Best when viewed at full resolution.
Wow, I may have to upgrade my Octane and get the Carrara plugin. Nice job, Phil!

Cool beans with shaders. Like Rogerbee says stick with what works for you. What I like is knowing the results i will get with my settings. My latests

And here it is with the diffuse maps for the ground and rocks applied.
Great looking terrain!
And a fantastic vehicle!

Outstanding - the snow really looks good!
Another bunch of great renders Bob. I like the way you are using emitters on/in objects to add mood and interest to your renders.
