...for content purchased at Daz3D, yes the DIM is a good thing. For content purchased elsewhere and non Daz freebies, that is where it becomes painful to have to reinstall.
Well, it's no harder to install 3rd party content now than it was before DIM, it's just that DIM makes it so easy that any other method fails by comparison.
If DAZ and vendors would cooperate, non-DAZ vendors could be taught how to package their content so DIM could handle that as well.

If by vendors you mean PAs, we are not involved in creating the installers. DAZ QA does that.
I doubt they would do it for others stores :D
I don't know how hard it is, but it would indeed be nice if other content creators could also make use of DIM. Did you inquire about it?
EDIT: DIM is of course connected to your DAZ account, it doubt it can work completely the same way for other stores. But it does use a download folder that maybe other creators can use.

I didn't mean that DIM should connect to accounts in other stores, just install the zips from your own HD. AFAIK there are already programs out there that can auto-install standard runtime zips, at least for Poser runtimes. Otherwise it wouldn't be a big deal to create one I think. I've already written programs for auto-download of product zips from several stores, adding an auto-installer they would work much like DIM.
It's more the SMART content metadata I was thinking of, I'm not sure where these data are but I guess DIM installs them. If vendors knew how to create these data they could include them in/with their zips, so DIM could install everything.
I'm not sure I understand correctly, but if you want to create metadata there is a guide here:
http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/userguide/creating_content/packaging/tutorials/adding_metadata/start
I don't think DIM uses metadata though.
DIM will insert the metadata for a product into the database if it exists (the metadata files are in Runtime/Support); if there is no metadata, DIM will create a Product entry, just using the list of files installed.
I will look at that tutorial.
What is the best way to merge two content libraries? Somehow I got two daz ones and they are both taking up a lot of space on my hdd.
OK, thanks. Those metadata look pretty complex though, probably not something many vendors would like to mess with.
...for me the metadata isn't that important as I don't use Smart Content anyway since it's display takes valuable space from the viewport. I still use the old vertical tree display in the content tab which I have been used to since ver 1.5.
I agree, It would be nice to have a way to install at least content in .zip from other stores off the local drive.
Freebies are another matter as packaging is so inconsistent. Some are just objs with the materials files, while others simply are not packaged correctly (I have seen some that are contain poser format files but do not follow the conventional runtime folder setup instead, having everything in just one single folder, the DIM would barf on that).
product lib up to 81 pages. :shut:
so if i look at the store hide filter, 12599 of 15663 items
= 3064 faint
does anyone else d/l the promo pics too?
i like to put them in fummaries, most of the time i need the memory jog to remember why i bought something. :)
!
can the dim d/l just the promos?
i've started re d/l the promos to name the images after the product name. iz gonna take a long time manually..
No, you have to download the zips for DIM to be able to download the promos (although you don't have to install them with DIM).
DIM wouldn't care, as long as the manifest showed correctly where the files were. DS/Poser would barf.
Yeah, I download the catalog pages. Have done it for years. Have almost everything from DAZ with it's own catalog image and also the whole page, and product template files when offered. Very handy when I can't remember what the heck a product was. Usually the image is enough to jog my memory but I grab the catalog page too. I keep each product in a separate folder and if a product has several directly related sub-products like colors or textures or additional morphs I'll keep all related sub-products in separate folders inside the base product's folder.
I download catalog pages With InternetExplorer "Save As" option and use the "*.mht" format that stores the web page as a single file rather than an HTML file and a separate folder with images.

...really, some of these have absolutely no organisation at all. The .obj, pp2/ppz and materials and texture files are all in a single folder with no hierarchy tree. I could make new folders in the appropriate folder, but as there is no named geometry or texture folder (usually the creator's name), there is nothing to point Daz to those files.
i had a horrible dream this morning was looking for a vicki dress but couldn't find it couldn't remember the name of it.
then when i woke realized it's a genesis dress, not v4, so of course wouldn't find it in my poser runtime.
now if i could only remember the name of it, some kind of rain wear, maybe, april showers?

I've never seen absolutely everything in one folder without subfolders. But I often see .obj in with the prop. You have to point Studio to that folder to find the .obj and it loads fine. Point for textures too. It doesn't mind if cr2, pp2, mc6 are in the same folder.
For my K4, V4, M4, Gen3 and CrittersNProps runtimes I have everything in the 'character' library. I think later versions of Poser are fine with it too, I just use Studio so I can't be sure. Studio looks at the file, not the name of the folder it resides in or what else is in the folder (edited to add except to discover if there are studio files with the same name in there as well--I can even have cameras and lights in there).
...If it's just a textured .obj with an accompanying material file (usually will say so in the description), I extract it to a new folder (with the item's name) then move it to my OBJ directory on my Library Drive which is categorised by type of content (similar to the content/runtime/library folder setup), which is mapped in Daz 4.7.
Yes, I have plenty of items that are .obj only plus textures. I organize them separately. In the Content Directory Manager besides DAZ Studio Formats and Poser Formats there is 'Other Import Formats' and that's what I select and point to the folder. It doesn't have to be in a runtime or anything.
For regular Poser content that has the .obj in props or whatever instead of geometries I usually just install it as packaged like I mentioned above.
...the OBJs directory is separate from any runtime, I just organise it that way so it is more consistent with the rest of my setup. Makes finding what I need a lot quicker.
crikey. post mm tally, up to 88 pages
wayyyyy too much :shut:
And you think you have too much. I really have too much. This is my count:
Pre MM - 104 pages
Post MM - 115 pages
No comment on your screen grab, Misty. I won't put mine up--too embarrassing.
But I just discovered another reason you can't have too much content and it contains a bit of irony.
Lotsa content means some things get lost, but even more content means you've gotten something more recently that you can keep track of that's the same general item so you can use it instead of the thing you can't find.
If this makes sense to you, it means you're floating in the same boat I am. :)
lol or the thing can't remember the name of
I'm not nearly as bad as I thought I was. 3,306 installed in DIM, 202 not, 51 random offsite purchases, & only 296 at Rendo. (I didn't start buying over there until last year).
I used to love RDNA back in the day (Little LadyFox's plushies!) but for some reason their site doesn't appeal to me anymore.
I thought I had a huge amount of content. I thought I was a DAZ-aholic.
But I cannot hold a candle to you people. I am clearly just a "dabbler" with only 14 pages in my product library here, and a paltry 898 items in DIM. Add to that maybe 20 items from ShareCG and 12 or so from Rendo.
Yeah, clearly I am just a dabbler. :)
And over 2400 items over at Rendo as well. Sigh...
You people are making me feel inadequate.
I have 105 pages of stuff here... probably added 6 or 7 pages during the March Madness- ha ha! grabbing Genesis stuff for the first time.
Way much stuff at Rendo, RDNA, Content Paradise, Xurge3d, Mankahoo, Hivewire, ontarget3d, Otica... must buy more!! Must buy more!! :P
...take heart, I've been in this since 2007 and only have 51 pages. Didn't help that I was on a low income and then out of work for over 18 months during which I was DLing only freebies and what I could get with my regular PC coupon.
Then again, since the advent of Genesis and G2, I rarely purchase any character morphs (as I dial spin most of my characters using morphing resource kits instead) or Pro Bundles, as well as not being much into fantasy stuff (save for fey), horror, or skimpwear
