I have hundreds of male figures and thousands of morphs. I would like to keep my figures installed but they are too draining to leave installed. I agree something better needs to be developed so they don't load at once.
It would be nice if in the Tabs for morphs and expressions they were listed but you have to put a check mark to actually activate them. And that functionality had to be enabled with a global checkmark so folk could have it work as it does now. Eg, me & maybe others don't own too many morphs but would still like to have both possibilities.
Original Boyd 8 and Owen had Michael 8 at 100 percent.
I find Michael 8 (original) head morphs do some odd things with the expressions on Genesis 8.1's heads, so a straight morph, while looking similar, also did not perform as well as I'd like in the expression department, and there is something for lack of a better term, 'crunchy' which occurs with M8's head on 8.1 at 100 percent. So I wanted to see if I could reduce that problem while still achieving close to the same look.
So I discovered, that M8'1s and M8's body is pretty much nearly identical. M8'1 is slightly shorter, but when enlarged appropriately, they basically are the same shape. There is some differences in the neck region, but you can see when I juxtapose 8.1 and 8.0 they are virtually identical bod-wise. (Original M8, is the lighter whereas 8.1 is the darker tanned one).
So, for New Boyd, I dialed out all of M8's body and used M8.1's body. Since they appear to be the same. I also used M8.1's HD morphs, at least until I find ones I like better.
One of the happy coincidences that occurred from the Michael 8.0 extraction, is that clothing appears to fit him better. There is less poke through than with Michael 8.0
Obviously, Michael 8.1's head was not really a viable option, not only for reasons but simply that dialed in, his head made Boyd look terrible.
Original Boyd (short hair), is on the right, new Boyd is on the left.
The structure of the G8.1 version is slightly different. Things I've noted: the pecs are bigger. Also, there is a 'underarm gap' for lack of a better term in the new figure. Also, the bends of G8.1's body seem better. The Eyebrows are different in a way I have not figured out. For example, the skin there is different, and the brows did not quite match up.
To compensate for the crunchiness that occurred in M8's head morph on M8.1, I reduced the head shape to 60 percent and then dialed in some Torment. This ballooned the lips, so I had to do a bit of work, to reduce them slightly.
I also attempted to dial down the muscularity so Boyd 8.1's pecs aren't so... Balloony.
As far as the skin he uses Garett's skin, but I applied the shaders of another g8.1 skin. It turned out okay, except for the dingus, which I spent a lot of time, color matching.
Hmm. One thing, I think Mike 8.1 has some baked in height.
Yes I think you are right. I'll check that out tomorrow. Also michael 8.1 seems to have some height baked into his morph.
Yeah, they've been doing that pretty consistently for a while. For some reason, they took height out of the main controller slider and put it into the body slider. At least with the guys, they've done that fairly consistently; I still don't understand what they did with Alexandra, where her body slider makes her taller, but her main slider makes her shorter. Why would you do that?
I'm not sure if it's just the different character morphs, or if something is different about 8.1 himself, but it does look like all of the muscle groups are different sizes relative to 8.0, and some in very slightly different places, as well. I hadn't noticed that much because I don't think any of my characters are anything like as muscular as Boyd. (Well, except the one, and he's still on 8.0 because I've already moved his texture from M4F4 to G2 to G3G8. One more move, and he'l be nothing but a blur with no detail at all.)
Scaling is also different. M8 loads at 103 percent but I think m8.1 is loading int at 100 percent. So if you make him larger using the height scale vs larger using regular scaling it make a difference.
I also did not dial as much muscles into Boyd 2. He already had some pretty defined abs and doing more looked a bit too much. He’s got about a quarter less addon muscle than original Boyd and is about the same size.
For now iam returning back to genesis 8. Ultimately I think I can get a close facsimile to the outward look of Owen and Boyd in 8.1 but there seem to be problems I can't quite fix, such as the heads, the necks, and the expressions which look kinda funky. Maybe when there are more figures for g8.1 to blend with.
The expressions changed the face shape slightly differently. If you're use to the old face shapes via the old expressions the new face shapes via the new expressions will look incorrect.
For me the newer ones look more correct and are easier to use but it still takes longer because the old expressions I knew how to get are gone.
Nonesuch00 is correct. I can make Owen and Boyd nearly exact in g8.1 which would be my preference, But I would have to sacrifice expressions. Only some of the old and some of the new will work, without looking scary, or crumpling the features depending on the rig.
Some of the new expressions, don't look great on figures with the Michael 8 morph and the morphs I use to make the boys.. This is one reason, I'm seriously disappointed with the Changes to the new Michael 8.1. His head shape is so radically different than the original it cannot be used as a substitute. Perhaps a PA like Slosh will port original Michael 8 with correctives over to Genesis 8.1
I think I will use a direct port to Genesis 8.1 for now. At least when I want to take advantage of more fluidity.
For example, the expressions that came with Michael 8.1 When applied to Boyd's port his genesis 8 lips and mouth, are larger but the rigging seems to over-adjust when grabbing his lower lip, so the texture of the lip isn't the only bit that's grabbed but part of its chin. So it moves the mouth to make the expression fine, but the texture somehow not in alignment. . (Both Owen and Boyd have somewhat larger mouths than Genesis 8.1 figures.), So the lower lip has a dent where the mouth rigging moves the mouth, the lip, but not the whole lip. The lip surface below is considered under the lip, but its still part of his mouth.
Same for some reason with Boyd's eyelids. The figure I modeled him with had slightly puffy upper eyelids. This is using a morph that came with Genesis 8.0 but in Genesis 8.1 the eyelids are being pulled around in a way that doesn't jive with the morph.
I tried moving the lips, and lids, around, but they don't look the same... If that makes sense.
That always seems to be the case, trying to port one generation into the other. Look at the attempts to port V4 or M4 into Genesis, then Genesis 2 . . . . I was dissatisfied with the results and gave up on it. The figures just weren't close enough.
There is also surprisingly little content for Genesis 8.1 that I can use.
Most of what has been released is kinda niche. Demons, talk show host poses, etc.
I need more 'regular' real-world content to utilize all this. yes you can use Genesis 8 male expressions, poses, etc, but it seems weird to make a new generation, and then not really push the content.
Oh man, I missed that. Looks like Boyd's Arm is being twisted around 95 percent. LOL. That's scary posing.
RawArt's Massive Morphs as well, do not play kindly with Boyd. I do love, them, but the bicep issue is a problem. Dialed over 60 percent, and you start getting Biceps like Hershey's kisses. I will dial it down to 60 percent and use the bodybuilder morphs to compensate.
Intruder dog: Bitty is a little jealous! She wants Owen and Boyd for her very own to share with no other doggos. Owen is hers. (and Boyd's).
But, I think the Chihuahua will be a surprise from Grandpa. I think it too will have to be a dogbot as well. A friend for Bitty! A different matter entirely.
Grandad made about 5 dogbots with his special chip machine before Spartacus disguised as Goodby framed him and he went to jail long ago. Perhaps he intended to make bit a sister back then
Although grandad's eidetic memory would allow him to make more dogbots, Sparticus still has most of grandad's equipment, some of which Goodby also used. Grandad needs the chip press in storage at Goodby Enterprises to make more dogbots, since parts are in short supply after the war.
This eventually changes when Grandad liberates actual goodby's brain 35 years later. Goodby is very resistant to working on robotics after having his brain in cold storage for 35 years but he is determined to help Silas recover his reputation, and he's unhappy with the losses grandad suffered as the result of Spartacus's actions, and he doesn't like the mercenary way his family has turned out.
I had considered making bitty a chihuahua but the original bitty is cute and full of life, so she's here to stay.
Here I redid the bicep and changed the pose slightly
I don't get into pirate stuff much except the old Captian Crunch commercials and cereal box backs, haven't even seen any of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies yet either although I do like the several versions I've seen of Peter Pan, but I decided to buy the The Pirate's Cove Scene Kit with Props and Poses for Genesis 8 | Daz 3D to use in that Sword & Socery render contest & I love the way it renders.

I admit Pirates and Vikings are somewhat overrated in my book. I just can't get into the pillaging and stealing stuff, and kidnapping/slavery as something to glamorize. The cove does look great though!
You know that you can use 8.0 expressions on 8.1 characters, right? I'm pretty sure they're exactly the same.
At this point I mix up 8.0 and 8.1 expression dials without even thinking about it. I'm loving the expanded range of possible expressions.
Yes, I love certain genesis 8 expressions. I need to dig down and make some genesis 8.1 expressions. I find the mouth kind of interesting. A lot of the poses twist the lips in ways you just couldn't do in Genesis 8.
There is also surprisingly little content for Genesis 8.1 that I can use.
Most of what has been released is kinda niche. Demons, talk show host poses, etc.

Genesis 8.1 female however has a ton more stuff.
I'm guessing DAZ and its vendors are waiting for Genesis 9 and DS 5 before putting out a lot of new male products.
I think Genesis 9 is way off. I think the reason for the lack of genesis 8.1 content is simply that they are male figures, and the new PBR shader is more difficult to use, and most people are content with 8.
I do think that they need to release a more basic type of male figure, with classic and useful genetics. As much as I love Torment and other figures, so far Genesis 8.1 seems to comprise a lot of 'character' actors.
I really could use an everyday male similar to Michael 8. Michael 8.1's head is pretty unusable, and while he makes a great bit figure, he isn't useful to me as regular M8 was since he doesn't blend nearly as well.
I do think content quality in the store especially as far as male content is concerned, has been lowered. So we get more amateur characters and outfits than ever.
At the moment, it looks like the closest they've got to some kind of everyday ordinary guy is Jazz -- and honestly, I kind of think they needed to do a bit more with him. His head morph is very nice and distinctive; his body is maybe a half-step away from being generic G8.1M. I mean, I don't demand that every guy be a ripped musclehunk -- I like Fred and one of the guys based on him -- but Jazz' body doesn't even make sense for the promo copy. Even back in the seventies, younger policemen were required to maintain some sort of physical conditioning, if not quite as much as today. I wound up using a couple of morphs to give him a bit more definition without giving him more bulk -- slim and very slightly wiry works a bit better, I think.
I agree with your comments about Jazz. I think base bodies should be more exotic than base male.
I do have a preference for somewhat fit base figures, but I have all the males for genesis 8.1 and they are useful, but not what I need to help me out with Owen and Boyd.
I like the look of Zale combined with torments body. That looks pretty good to me. I am not overwhelmed with his skin or brows. I seem to buy mermaid content and rarely use it so I am wary of loading up again.
not getting a coupon has made me hold off on Zale as well.

I like that idea. It would really allow you to keep your characters installed, and take care of errant morphs when they were saved universally.
Here is Boyd gen 8.1
I have been working on moving both Owen and Boyd to Genesis 8.1
Why?
I may still use both, but Genesis 8.1 seems to have very fluid movements. I also really like the skin. We will see.
Looks nice. Are you using any different morphs or textures for 8.1?

Okay, realized my attempts to dial down the pecs slightly was actually making them larger. 'doh
To me original Boyd seems slightly longer in the torso .......

This is Owen and Boyd directly converted to Genesis 8.1
The pose was "Around Me Poses" which were awfully cute, although, contained baked-in expressions.
Boyd's biceps are ... kind of epic, there. Is that just something weird happening with the pose?
(Also, I will admit to wondering how Bitty would handle the chihuahua intruder.)
Oh man, I missed that. Looks like Boyd's Arm is being twisted around 95 percent. LOL. That's scary posing.
