So stuck

September 2020 in Blender Discussion

Hey there.  I have no idea what is going on, but I am completely stuck trying to use the blender bridge.

I installed the bridge through DIM, and it shows up in Daz under Scripts->Bridges->Blender just like it should.  But after that, nothing seems to match the various instructions I can find and I am lost.

Clicking on the script runs a process that seems to be doing something.  It moves my character around and says it is exporting preferences.  Eventually this window closes, and... nothing.  Where did it save the file?  No idea.

I checked on the Daz site and in the DTB User guide posted in the help center.  They say to go into Blender and enable the Daz to Blender Add-On.  Well, the Daz Add-On is not listed in the Blender add-on window.  The user guide also says to install the add-on from my blender roaming directory.  Well, there is a DTB folder there, with a bunch of python scripts, but clicking install on them doesn't add the Daz add-on into the list of add-ons in the blender preferences window (the user guide says there should be a zip file there, but I see a bunch of extracted script files).

So, what do I do?  I am also not getting any pop-up prompts in Daz when I run the script (the instructions say it should ask me whether i want the figure, the environment, or both, but that never appears, it just exports the figure (I guess)).

The DAZ side seems to be working. Which OS are you on? Did you tell DIM where Blender is located? You need to find the zip file of the plugin and install in Blender.

Look up a tutorial on installing add-ons in blender.  It is a simple process but different from what we are used to.  Basically you will tell blender where the zip file is, tell it to enable the add-on, and Blender will install and enable the add-on from the zip file.

i had not told DIM where Blender lived, but I updated that, reinstalled the bridge through DIM, and there is no change, still stuck.

I went into Blender edit->preferences->add-ons and pointed the install at the zip file that DIM downloaded.  Clicking Install on that window does literally nothing, it just closes the window.

Am I doing something wrong in the add-on process?  The walk-throughs i found seem to say to do what i am doing.   Which zip file did you mean?  the only zip i have is the one that DIM downloaded to my installmanager directory.  All the scripts in that zip file seem to be unzipped into my blender appdata directory already.  I can run those scripts through the blender add-on install window, but they do not seem to do anything, either.

Try typing Daz into the search bar after clicking on edit, preferences because DIM automatically installs it into Blender for you and it should show up automatically without having to do anything with a zip file. It should show up after searching under armature daz, or something to that effect but it starts with armature. I just found out about that Friday and it worked on my laptop.

Thank you bennie, it was there under armature, I had not noticed it.

I enabled it in the blender window.  Do I now re-run the Daz script?  Or is there a file somewhere that Daz outputs when I run the script?  I can only find some fbx files.

Glad you got it enabled in Blender! If you've already run the script in daz, you can just go and import it into Blender. I honestly don't know where it saves the file, but unless you run the scirpt again in Daz, whatever you already did will stay there and you can continually reimport it if you so choose.

There's an fbx file.  Do I use the blender import fbx function?  Or is there a special Daz import I can't find?  When I run the script nothing happens on its own, but fbx files appear in my documents folder.

Hit N in Blender and on the right hand side you'll see a menu bar and there should be a menu option that says daz to blender or something similar, from there you just click import genesis 3/8 and it'll import whatever file you exported from daz when you went to scripts, bridge, daz to blender.

Thank you again!  Ok, I hit N, went to the Daz to Blender tab, hit Import New Genesis 3/8, and it made an empty object called DAZ_ROOT, but did not import the genesis 8 figure I had exported from Daz.  I went back into Daz, ran the bridge->Blender script again, verified that there was a file, and tried again, with the same results.  When I tried Import new Env i get an error message in the script output saying that something went wrong in the __init__ script.

I really wish this was easier, lol.  I appreciate your patience!

Can you post a screenshot of the error?

After a restart there doesn't seem to be the error message, so that's good news, I think!

If it's empty, didn't you use the script in Studio? If you did, was it the script that came with the plugin, or an earlier one?

I've just thought of another reason why it might be empty, well possibly two.

Instances and old poser era items.
