Yep, I like the skin on that one. Good job.
...ASUS G750 JX
Yes it's a gaming oriented notebook but it has flow through cooling with intake vents in the front and exhaust ports in the back.
--3.4gHz i7
--16GB RAM expandable to 32GB
--nVidia Gforce 770 Mobile GPU with 3GB GDDR VRAM (useful for GPU assisted rendering when that option [hopefully] becomes available with Reality3)
--1TB HDD + 256GB SSD
--Super Multi DVD
The only two downsides is it costs over 1,700$ ($1,749 at Newegg) and comes bundled with Win8 with no "downgrade" option for Win7.
Another route would be going with a custom house that also offers systems with similar cooling
...been AWOL for a while I know.
Not been doing much work lately due to the situation with Unemployment benefits ending at the close of last year and our elected officials dragging heir feet on the measure to extend benefits. In two days they go on recess so nothing will get done until they return. Meanwhile nearly two million long term unemployed (like myself) are left out in the cold and that number is growing daily.
...in 16 days I may be without a place to live.
Kind of kills the enthusiasm for working on my projects.
They will overheat, that's the main problem. You see, PC graphics cards have cooling fans and notebook ones don't, the more calculations and whatever that the cards make, the hotter they will get which makes the main fan come on and work hard. You're better off with a Desktop PC, in there everything has fans and they're a load cooler. The PC system I'm planning will have 16gb RAM (Upgradeable to 32 if I get a job!), a 6 core AMD processor and a 2GB AMD graphics card. That should be more than man enough. Notebooks are really for surfing and sharing, they weren't really designed for much else.
That said, I'll keep the current system going till I've got the PC together.....
CHEERS!
Thanks,
With others I'd forgotten to plug the specular maps into the specular 2 channel. Lee looks great now.
CHEERS!
Ouch, yeah it does rather,
I'm long term unemployed myself and am living with my folks. It's a roof, but, it's theirs and I feel like I'm in the way. They should be enjoying their retirement and not have me under their feet. I'd love my own place, but, there's no way I can do that without a job. I can barely afford to put this new PC together, but, needs must and I'm not sure how much more this laptop has to give. I should have gone with a Desktop right from the get-go.
CHEERS!
I read your post Kyoto heartbreaking stuff....
Yep had nothing but temp issues with my notebooks. Hence why I built "The beast" had it since may never runs hot. All I do with the notebook now is create set scenes adjust my reality materials fire it up yep looks good after a few minutes then bake it on the big machine.

Downgrade is a scam. When I bought the beast I chose it with win 8 then found out i could not run Reality properly they tried to obtain my downgrade rights M$ refused the store activated a working win 7 for me. When R3 for studio comes I will be able to put my copy of 8 back on it. Another reason I am holding off getting the powerful notebook. By the time R3 comes out I may have the money to get what I need then. Just need to sell another few projects. I want to get the notebook with an AMD card Lux works better with AMD's but want to stick with intel processor

...be thankful for what you have. I basically am looking forward to living on the streets in a few weeks.
As to the computer, I made do as well as I could with my trusty old notebook for years. It's now seven years old and the keyboard is slowly burning out. Fortunately found an old USB Apple keyboard (one with real 'keys and "touch" to it) a free box the other day. Grabbed that and plugged it into one of the USB ports and it works perfectly, just have to get used to a slightly different layout (keep hitting the "Apple" key as it is where the "Alt "key on a PC keyboard is, nice to have a ten key pad though).
I was fortunate I was still employed when I purchased the components for my workstation. Love to double the RAM but still very satisfied with what I have. Besides, with AoA's lights, rendering is no where near as much a strain or memory hog as it is with IBL.
Still have yet to put it to the Reality/Lux test.
...thank you. Going to take a major miracle for a lot of people besides myself to make it through the next month.
...best bet then is to look at a custom build house. Make sure though to get one with an enclosure that has separate intake and exhaust fans/vents similar to what the ASUS 750 has.
Just looked at several sites that allow custom configuration and couldn't find any systems that had or could have an ATI GPU paired with an Intel CPU. Those that did have ATI graphics whether off the shelf or that allow for custom design also were built around an AMD CPU. The way it looks, as notebooks go, things seem to be more "integrated" due to the tight space constraints so you may need to compromise on the GPU if you want to stay with an i7 processor. The one advantage I still see with the nVidia on eh ASUS G750 is the number of CUDA cores and amount of VRAM it has that, as I mentioned, would come into play with GPU assisted rendering which I believe is available with the latest version of Lux and hopefully should be supported by Reality3.
Also if you are planning to use a "swap disk", look for the fastest drive you can get to reduce lag a much as possible.
There were a couple places that sounded like they might be able to do an Intel/ATI setup but they required requesting a formal quote which brings up the old question, "if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it".
I wasn't aware that Lux works better with AMD. Usually AMD is more favoured for gaming.
A pain as Daz Studio and Renderman/3Delight is more compatible with nVidia.
Perhaps but i always have had ATI radeon cards never had any issued and my current i7 notebook ha a redeon card. I just cant run long renders or I will fry it and its out of warranty. As long as I just mostly set up stuff on it its just fine. Finally this is all eventually financed by sold projects just re investing it in my hobby..Im in no rush since I have the beast.. Paolo is claiming that R3 will support Lux GPU rendering. either way im good..
...this looks about to get nasty real fast.
I like the Laughing Loon Whisky bottle
There is actually a brand of wine from California called Smoking Loon
LOL I got inspired of adding this scenario to my "rednecks" after watching a movie called The pawn shop chronicles.
...I'll have to catch that on Netflix. Looks rather amusing.
Yeah, you're right, in your situation, having a roof at all becomes the major priority and I really hope you get something sorted really soon. Most of the major things I've bought in the past were paid for out of savings I had, though they got depleted rather quicker than I thought when things started going wrong, like the laptop before this one all but burning out because I ran its single core processor into the ground. I aim not to touch any savings this time round and will get each component as and when I feel I can afford them. Though this could get tricky when it comes to the OS and the monitor, they being the 2 most expensive parts.
Yeah, that's why I intend to build mine. This laptop won't last much longer if I keep running DS full out on it and building more complex scenes. The thing is, in order for my renders to look as good on here as they do in DS I have to run the browser though the same card and it's the one that runs hottest. It'll be getting on for late summer before I have most of the components in place, possibly later, so it'll be a gamble as to whether the laptop will hold out that long. Portraits are as much as I dare do right now, so there will be plenty more of them to come.
CHEERS!
...that's how I built my system. You might say it was kind of like the old Johnny Cash tune One Piece at a Time.

What savings I had is long gone.
Looks pretty bleak right now as our elected officials will be off on holiday for the next week or so without having resolved the UC situation.
If I left something that important unfinished before I went on holiday leave, I wouldn't have a job to come back to.
Good morning...and good night.
It sucks how they can do that, going off on their jollies while the people that put them where they are lose their homes. I really hope it's not too late when they get back.
I really feel for you..
...Thank you.
Supposedly they will return with three days to go in the month.
My state advised me to keep in contact and keep filing. They are also considering an interim emergency proposal of their own. As long as I have my weekly reports on file, once something is settled on, I will get benefits for those weeks retroactively.
I've got them crossed!
I so hope everything works out for you. I remember when one of my payments didn't go through, I called them and the money was in my account and available in 3 hours. Back in the day we were paid by cheques you had to cash in post offices. When payments when AWOL then, you had to go to the job centre and personally collect the cheque if you wanted it that day. I switched to bank payments the minute I knew I could.
I saw the case I'm planning for my new system in the flesh today and it looks to suit my needs. The monitors I'm looking at are more affordable than I thought too. It looks like memory and OS will be the biggies. I thought I could get Windows 7 Pro cheap and then use the upgrade for 8 Pro that I've already got, but, 7 Pro is the same price as 8.1 Pro! It's going to take a loooooong time to get this together, unless I get a job! Hope you have luck on that front too.
CHEERS!
...here we now can get direct deposit (which I have).
The ridiculous thing is, I have a balance showing in my UC account of one more payment, so the money is there, they just won't release it because the EUC programme expired. Basically that money isn't doing me or anyone else any good as it is just sitting there in limbo tied up by a bleedin' bureaucratic "technicality".
Right now, even if I was hired and started on Monday it would be too little too late as most jobs here usually pay twice a month. It would be almost a month before I see my first paycheque. That's not stopping me from still looking and sending out apps & resumes. Just that something on the State's or congress' end needs to happen between now and the end of the month so I and many others can pay the rent and bills to keep a roof over our heads and be able to continue our work search. Once you are out on the street with nothing, that is pretty much it, you are done. The best you can hope for from then on are day to day manual labourer jobs (which I no longer can do) and occasional handouts from passers by that might get you a couple burgers and a cup of coffee at MickyD's for dinner and maybe a night in a flophouse once a week so you can take a shower and wash your clothes.
Its collecting them interest...
...yeah, while I get to sit here worrying about how to pay my next month's ISP bill so I can keep looking for work and reactivate my phone so I can get calls for interviews.
...well enough said on this here. This thread is supposed for pics, not 'plaints. Apologies for sending off the rails.
I have a thread more suited for such discussion (link below). Please, remember to observe TOS when responding..

I don't mind,
After all, you can't fill this thread with renders if you're sleeping on a sidewalk with a cardboard box over your head. Anyhoo though, perhaps we should get back to renders, says he without one to contribute, LOL!
CHEERS!
I got one.
I think this hair may go in my list of favorites.
It's that new Lanny hair by swam.
lol my all time favorite is that really old long hair for i think it was aiko 3, i can't remember it's name but i use it all the time.
and i really like that Jillian hair that i got in a bundle over at another store from littlefox
Yeah, that does look pretty nice,
Once I get the Long Time Dead pack, that may well be it till I get my system built. Mind you, I can get a heck of a lot of mileage out of zombies!
CHEERS!
I tried something like a zombie apocalypse type scene.more or less a test to see if i could at least do a bigger scale than i'm used to.
Later i'd like to give it a better shot with more varied zombies and people.and bigger scene.
