Complaint:  Arghhh... my car is on its deathbed.frown  My trusted mechanic called me back with major bad news.  Not worth spending $500 on new brakes, then $600 on another round of underbody chassis work and $400 on new shocks.  I cannot budget for a newer car.  I am to join the "carless ancient ones".  Majorly bummed! sad

Non-complaint:  No more $60 gasoline bills.  No more monthly $70 car insurance bills.  No more $1000 yearly maintenance bills.  No more car registration bills.  No more car inspection bills.  Yay?

It is difficult to come to grips with, and 3 years on I do still curse sometimes.   And of course living, as I do, in a smaller country than you  taxis and buses do make thing workable. Especially as over here we get a free bus pass for local buses if we are over pensionable age.

thouhht I was gonna save jpg thumbnails in ole field and show it on a form in an image control. Not so

  • does it make me obsessive if i have renders going on multiple computers at once? or is this just normal?

i really hope i'm not obsessive... i probably am...

Why not store the path and filename to a field and use that to grab and display the image on the form?  Look at my site.  It's all data-driven except for the image slider on the home page.  That's how most sites do it...no hard coded path/filenames involved.

From a programming perspective (using Microsoft Visual Studio.NET) I prefer Microsoft SQL Server and the management studio.

SQLite is much simpler to work with, but what is best depends on the type of project:

Sounds like you want to add more light to fill in the areas thata re currently getting onyl bounced light (which takes much longer to resolve) while either turning all the lights down or adjusting the Tone Mapping in Render Settings (or both). The answer to graininess is almost always more light, but not just more intensity on the existing lights. Iray works by path-tracing, following the path of a light ray as it bounces around the scene; if there are areas that are not being directly illuminated then light paths have to bounce off othe surfaces to reach them, which will be fewer hits than areas that are directly illuminated with the result that they will look noisy for longer (soem pixels will be hit by a path and so lit, others will miss out and stay dark). Or at least, that is my understanding of the process - the advice is good (if it is a lighting issue) regardless, add some low-level lights to fill in the missed areas.

Another potential source of graininess is a more complex surface, often the eyes, which require more hits to resolve - as a result, if they make up only a small part of the image, the convergence ratio may be accounted for by other, simpler, areas of the image while those aprts are still far from converged. However, by your description I don't think that applies here.

I'm working on a set I bought this week. https://www.daz3d.com/sf-apartment

I can't recall what kind of lighting environment I had going on. I played with Tone Mapping a bit but everything was going so slow I couldn't tell if I was making things better or worse. One thing I did do was turn off the time limit. We'll see how it turns out. I'm sure once I get the image I like I'll post it (hopefully I'll remember what I did so I don't continue to complain about the same thing over and over).

It's slow to render yes. You can always denoise it - first one here is rendered in 10 minutes (GTX 1070), second one is the same one after denoising:

I'll have to experiment. Is that using the denoising settings in daz studio or photoshop or something else?

I can't say I have had many renders that go that fast. Most take hours...

    Edit: Apparently I have a GTX 1080

I'm using the NVidia denoiser, the same as Daz Studio uses but a standalone version. There is also an Intel standalone denoiser, many say it's better than the NVIdia one.

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/316206/denoise-renders-and-save-a-lot-of-time-nvidia-not-reqd
    https://taosoft.dk/software/freeware/dnden/

Got to say... I've been using one of these (I forget which) and it has been giving me happy results. Thank you! THANK YOU!

I've put put some seriously noisy images through it and gotten nice results.

Well they always reduce the details a bit, especially if the renders are very noisy / rendered for a short time. Including Albedo and Normal files will fix that but these files are not easy to generate. But if you're satisfied with the results I guess it's not a big problem.

That's because the phone or whatever you use creates them that way, the forum does not do that. There is probably an option for rotaing them before saving.

Do you really need brakes?... Stopping is so overated. Fred Flintstone just used his feet... that seemed to work.

But seriously, I get the brakes, but what’s the specific problem with the “underbody chassis work”?  What’s broken/needs fixing there?

Also how bad are the shocks?

Structural members of the unibody undercarriage frame are rotted.  I had it fixed  two years ago.  i.e. Metal plates welded on to enhance strength of what was left, but now more has rotted away and there isn't much to weld to anymore.  The retired guy (professional shop, but retired) that I had fix it before, for $500 seems to be out of  touch.  Away, out of business, dead?  Other places quote me $1200+.  Shocks apparently use an air pump to keep them floating but now the pump runs pretty much all the time.  Replacing them with strictly mechanical shocks is quoted as "expensive" (didn't ask).  Gas tank straps have rotted away.  Both rear brakes need pads and disk replaced.  And that was with just a quick inspection.  "Definately will not pass inspection" due in October.  sad  It's a shame, interior of car is immaculate dark grey leather, power seats all work, all luxury gizmos for 2003 installed, A/C functions, radio/CD/tape functions.  Beautiful car (from the inside).frown

That’s a bummer... I’m familiar with that kind of suspension system. Cushy ride, but when it goes, it’s expensive... the chassis problem is bad if it’s the main components... I was hoping it was something more like a hole in the belly pan or something less serious... and the tank straps are rotty too... you kinda need that thing attached to the car.

Sorry... you seemed to be having lots of fun on your mini adventures this summer with your car.

I hate when a car you’ve had for a long time finally kicks the bucket... it really sucks.

If it’s an iPhone, when that happens, edit the photo by rotating the photo 90° save, then rotate it again to the correct position and save... for some reason just rotating it once doesn’t work. This happens a lot with my iPad when I try to use a photo in portrait mode.

Maybe it depends on how you hold the phone when saving (screen auto rotate)?

It's not a really efficient method, anyway.  What I suggested is much more efficient, and saves data storage capacity for actual data and index space.

I saw a story on the news tonight.  An ambulance dropped it's gas tank.  It's not a pretty thing.  It can be worse if a spark from it hitting the pavement ignites the fumes and that follows up to the gasline and into the car!  surprise

I wondered, though, what kind of maintenance and safety checks that ambulance underwent.  Doesn't seem to have been very stringent.  Fortunately, it was not engaged in an actual emergency transport.

Yeah, bummed about my car.  Already, I'm going through, anxiety attacks about laundry, and doctor appointments.  I can figure out a way to get:

    groceries (walk),

mail (walk or drop $90/year post office box and have it delivered to house free),

prescriptions (have them sent via mail),

garbage (arrange with landlord to include it in their private pickup for the other apartment),

    clothing (purchase on-line and mailed)

    mini-adventures (cry in my beer)

Since I never get guests and won't be going out much there's no need to shave or bathe anymore.  I can see Cabin-Fever in my future.  Watch the headlines for western NY wildman rampage.devil

Oh,blush forgot about having to do laundry and go see doctors.  Nevermind, when necessary I'll just scrape the hair and dirt off.indecision

  • i may or may not have a phone interview today. i don't have anxiety about the interview. interviews are the easy part (getting them is harder).

all my anxiety is about not getting a job and equally as bad about actually getting a job... dealing with people... learning a new company... convincing myself i know what they have me doing...

i've really gotten way too comfortable in my extended lay off induced vacation. i've gone a bit feral i think so having to deal with an office environment could be a challenge. i can't hang out at my desk immitating my models can i?

can i even get ready for work in 30 minutes now? these days it takes me 4 hours to get ready to go to the store.

I’d suggest a bike, but that’s not for most folks... there was an old fellow (like Yoda old) around here who used to ride a three wheel bike... Every day, except in rain or really bad weather... he looked like he was in his late 80s or early 90s (no joking). It was one of those trike setups, not a recumbent bike. It had a decent sized basket in the back which the fellow would carry his groceries in... Slow as molasses, but he peddled around... for at least ten years he was around...

One day he just stopped showing up...

I like to think he is okay and living on a farm upstate... And he’s probably playing with all the other old people... running in the grass and chasing rabbits... or he won the lottery and bought himself a Lamborghini with a chauffeur and he’s probably just driving around all day on some sunny Caribbean island or Hawaii.

Shut up everyone... It’s how I wanna imagine it... it’s sad otherwise.

Anyway... maybe you can get a bike like that and become a beloved fixture in your community... or at least some crazy guy who keeps trying to run trucks off the road with his trike.

There are also E-bikes and scooters... but they are probably pricey... I have no idea... they can’t be that expensive, every food delivery guy in NYC seems to have one and they make like 30¢ an hour (that’s a jab at those food delivery apps which weren’t sharing tips and underpaying “contractors”). I’m pretty sure 72% of NYC’s mass is e-bikes now... it’s getting weird over there.

You’re a former biker, so the suggestion of an e-bike or scooter is probably demeaning, but you could go the Mad Max route and trick it out with barbed wire, spikes, bolted on armor (thin sheet metal stolen from the roof of a neighbor’s chicken coop), some skulls... (plastic, if you don’t have real ones laying around)...

I’m just throwing out some dumb ideas... I don’t like the thought of you sitting around rotting...

Sorry, that’s what my wife calls it if I sit around a lot doing what she perceives as “nothing constructive”... I wasn’t inferring you have a fungus or leprosy issue.

Seriously, don’t get immobile, it’s downhill once you stop going out and about.

You can’t see it, but I’m wagging my finger at you in a very disapproving manner... my brows are furrowed even.
