Custom work involving ribbons

I'm a whole bunch of months out on needing it, but I find its best to start this sort of discussion ASAP. In my next book, the MC meets her people for the first time. These people dress in outfits of loose flowing ribbons. Mummy wraps won't do. For several reasons, primary being that most are outdated, secondary being that they are wrapped nice and tight. I would like to illustrate a scene involving several villagers dancing. I figure dForce should be involved. I imagine I'll have to do each individual individually. No problems there. So. Who do I talk to, and how much is it going to cost me? I'm also going to post over on Renderosity as well. I keep buying Lully"s fantastic dForce outfits that I don't need, lol. Love the loose flowing look. Am I correct in thinking that dForce is making stuff like this more possible? Is it easier to craft with dForce? Do I ask too many questions? ~~LA

It would help to see an image or sketch of what you have in mind. Maybe someone already knows of an existing product. Have you checked Jepe's store here at Daz? Your description makes me think of his products. Or how about Flying Fabric from The Philosopher?

  • The ribbons would all be up to three inches wide.

I'll comb the internet to see if I can find some examples for this thing at exists within my brain. Sadly, my ability to sketch isn't that great. Though I'll give it a go if I can't find a good example. I would point out, too that such work would not need to be kept "exclusive" at all. I'd in fact hope that the design would make its way out for everyone to enjoy. I don't know if that's incentive or not. I'm a writer. I'm better with words.

I'll come up with a much more detailed description. Maybe even rough out the scene. Maybe if I describe the movement, as well as the garments it would help.

Pretty stuff. My poor bloated wishlist has become a dumping ground that keeps me from impulse buys. Like looking through Lully's or OutOfTouch or Liliflame's store on Renderosity. So many pretty things, but not what I need. : )

Google image searches so far have failed me utterly.

For now I'll leave it with this: Imagine you have a stage, with satin/silk/cotton ribbons of various colors/transparancies stretched across at various angles. Then, suppose a ballet dancer danced through them, each coming loose and wrapping around his/her form as they spun and leapt. Now imagine the end result as she/he take his/her bow - that would be the "outfit."

This is the product that comes to mind from your description https://www.daz3d.com/fantasy-cloth-wrap-for-genesis-2-female-s

Others that might help add more to the outfit might be https://www.daz3d.com/fantasy-wrap-for-genesis-3-female-shttps://www.daz3d.com/firebride-dress-for-genesis-2-female-s-and-genesis-3-female-s, and https://www.daz3d.com/idg-dforce-dynamics-scarves-and-shawls (mabey you could try dForcing the scarves not just around the neck?).

Maybe layering things would work. The first is good, though a little sparse. I'd be willing to give it a try. Maybe with something like Fit Control I could move multiple layers around. Their "dancewear" might be more revealing though. I'd give it go, anyway. Don't need much of an excuse to add to my collection of stuff, anyway. I'll keep an eye on it to see if it goes on sale before I will need to get serious about it. Artwork is about a year away from needing to be done, so I got time. My concern is the age of the product. If it's got lots of bones to move around, then that's nice, but to do the full scene I'd be staring at multiple figures, trying to get it to shape to the movement conveyed. I'm still new to this. I haven't figured out how the "Add dForce" thing works, though folks do keep suggesting I add dForce to stuff all the time. The second concern if that it would lose all movement if placed on a Gen8, forcing me to use a Genesis 2 model. I don't mind so much for the background characters, just that I'd then be picking up additional morphs and such so I didn't end up with 15-30 identical people in the scene.

Second two are interesting, but the outifts they wear are done without the use of sewing. They pretty much just wrap themselves loosely in scarves and ribbons. They wouldn't create dresses out of it, preferring instead to wrap each leg seperately, or at the least, wrapping the pelvic region and letting the legs go free. Still, pretty.

I saw one for dForce shawls, too. Maybe I could somehow layer dForce products? I had some success with some pajamas and a blanket, but there were also a lot of attemps where the pajamas exploded, too. Again, I'm still learning.

Maybe I should try and find some good dForce tutorials on YouTube.

This has been a great community, though each day I find more evidence that the catalog needs someone to go through and start adding tags to things. I didn't see any of these when I was searching. Like when I type in "ripped Jeans" and get... well, one or two results that actually have ripped jeans in them... I find it hard to believe that there aren't more in the catalog.

But honestly, I draw a blank constantly when deciding what to type into the seach field. The software has been a joy to use. The catalog... well, it's very frustrating!

Thanks for the help so far!

You might try adding a ribbon shader to these and then use long strips of mesh with dforce to simulate the flowing parts https://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/g8f-body-wrap/124550/

That could work. I'll have to give it a shot. Maybe I should ask if there are any good dForce tutorials on YouTube that people use.

there was a program for making wraps and bandages on Renderosity but I forget what it was called.

There are a couple forums right here where they are trying differnt things with dForce and then showing the results and explaining how they achieved them.

Some very nice ideas in those two threads!

  • I'm going to lose a lot of sleep over this, lol.

I actually went to the forums today to actually look up information. So far, I've tried to just figure everything out myself. But after spending a ton of time trying to get this shirt I bought over at Renderosity to work right, i broke down and sought guidance. I ended up deviating a little bit - the shirt has a ton of ruffles, but I can't wait to hit the final render button. I figure it will take at least 24 hours on my machine at 4k resolution on a 6:9 aspect ratio. The previous attempt reached 75% at 17 hours, so...

I'm learning. Mostly through trial and error, but I'm starting to read to figure out what all these other buttons do. I've attached a before and after picture. First was just the concept, and gave me a laundry list of things to fix. The second is what I'll be rendering up.

I'm starting to think I'm going to have to build an nVidia machine in the near future. I currently run AMD. This program has really done a great job burning in my new CPU, but sadly being unable to use the video card certainly slows things down. I was reading somewhere that someone was doing 5000 pixel wide renders in 45 minutes and complaining of how slow that was. I'd have to assume it was 3D light, because a 45 minute render time under iray would be a DREAM! 3dlight is certainly faster, but... she's so pretty in iray!

This is the same model I hope to eventually wrap in these ribbons. Along with a scene full of other people. I'm glad I've got time, because it looks like I could spend a year figuring this out!

Thanks for all the help so far. This thread is basically pushing me into full-on fashion design, but that's been a fight I've been losing for a while. It may not be considered very manly, but I don't care anymore.
