Steam is merely the platform to sell it from, its no different than buying from Walmart or Amazon. …

Moreover, Steam does not have to run everytime you use MD.  …  So you can probably buy Marvelous Designer from Steam and only need Steam for the download, and then never need to run Steam again when using MD. The only exceptions being you might need to install any MD updates from Steam. That's up to the software company as well.

    Now I'm torn.

MD's Black Friday special last year was 30% off. Assuming the same for this year, that means $343. So if I purchase through Steam, I'll save $23. And download the program two weeks sooner…!

The question I'm asking myself now is, "Should I wait, or should I go for it through Steam?"

    Any thoughts?

What if Steam will have also some Black Friday special?

You can also look up the steam forums and see what people say.

Just like ATI has a Daz deals thing, there is a website dedicated to steam sales. It is called very simply "isthereanydeal.com". This site lists price history on not just steam, but all sorts of sellers. You can quickly compare steam to Amazon. You can also use the site to jump straight to the store page of the website selling it. The site also has a plug in that works on the steam store pages, giving quick info right on the store as you browse. Additionally you can link your steam wishlist to the site, just like you can link your Daz wishlist to ATI. You can even chose the exact parameters, so if it exceeds a certain percentage or dollar amount you will get an email about it. You can also chose which stores it looks at, as some are over seas that only sell keys that may not work in your country.

The only negative is the notice is not always instant. Sometimes it takes an hour or two to get the email notice the item is on sale. So you can wishlist MD8 and get notified when it goes on sale. The only thing is it probably cannot check the MD site itself as it is not on the list of stores it searches. This is more game focused after all.

Steam itself can also email you when your wishlisted items are on sale, but its not as robust. It will email you every time it is one sale, even if it is only 5% off.

On a less related note, steam's chat has greatly improved lately, stealing many of Discord's ideas. It has voice and much better support for adding links and attachments. So you can use steam chat as a way to communicate with other people and groups and exchange ideas.

  • Steam seems to do a late November sale, last couple of years it's been 40% (not sure how generally) and the upgrade offer on MD (45%) was set to expire just before the store-wide sale started. This year the upgrade discount is set to expire on 27/11, I think.

Any opinions yet about how 8 has improved on 7?

Their past clarificatiosn have made it clear that that means not for a corporate entity - if you are a sole trader, even if you then broker the results through or sell them to a store like Daz, you are making personal use of it and are permitted.

Oh, that is VERY useful info, thanks!

I got an offer from them - Personal Perpetual License - $240.

Offer valid until February 18, 2019.

Have to think more about it.

Anybody has tested MD 8? Would like to know the opinions.

I bought MD7 via Steam when it was on discount a year or so ago, then bought MD8 with the 45% upgrade coupon - if you're going to upgrade each release, or stick with the same version for a long time, the Steam version is perpetual and by far the cheapest option (assuming you're not just using it for 2 months and quitting.) The only real difference is you get limited time to do the upgrade when a new version comes out, but pay less.

Aside from the obvious updates listed on their site, my experience so far has been that the remesh (beta) is much better than the usual quads option, but still not perfect. I bought it anyway because I love the program and clearly the remesh will get better over time. I think the 3d sewing is new too? and already I found it super convenient to use at times rather than try and map out in my head which bit of a pattern is which when making adjustments to a fitted pattern.

I want to say that generally working with 2D patterns feels nicer to me, but I don't have anything specific to back that up.

  • For me just now the MD website is showing $240 for a perpetual licence on sale, offer ends February 18th, 2019.

I bought personal license of MD2, when it was introduced to the market, but have not used it that much.

Yesterday, I have tried again and easily transferred OBJ from MD2 to Character Creator 3,

so at least I have something to try for myself.

I have checked the Steam price and they have not adjusted their price - maybe they wait for Black Friday.

The 45% upgrade coupon will, I'm fairly sure, have expired before Steam's Black friday sale kicks in - other than that, Steam prices don't necessarily relfect discounts on the MD site (last year their disscount lasted longer than Steam's, as I recall, or possibly vice versa).

Yes, I'm finally tempted beyond measure. I may gift this to myself for my Birthday in January since this deal lasts past that date.  Very exciting news!

Since I have only MD2, there were no upgrades for my version, as long as I remember.

Their recent offer is the best, so far.

  • I might also add that with a perpetual license, you get much cheaper upgrades to MD when major releases happen.

....just received an email with a 250$ discount on for the Personal Perpetual Licence good until Feb 18th. At 240$ that is a "steal" almost better than upgrading (whcih I canot do as the version I have is too old for the update track).  Wish I had the resources but on an extremely tight budget (fixed income) that is going to only get tighter next month. sad

That's a tempting price indeed.  Now if I can just come up with a way to convince my wife that to make our lives complete we absolutely must have a 3D cloth modeling tool ...

The last time I checked, (last summer,) MD accepted Paypal for payment. I don't know if it would make it do-able for you, but using Paypal Credit, you could have six months to pay without interest. That's still $40 a month, though, if you split it into equal payments. (Paypal Credit no longer has the no payment for 6 months option. Really messes with my budgeting…!)

Waiiit, Paypal has a credit option? I may just have been financially ruined for life by this news...

    I'm sorry.

It used to be known as "Bill Me Later." Paypal bought them out years ago, and after a couple of years or so, they changed the name to Paypal Credit. I used Bill Me Later to buy my first graphics computer in 2010, and I've been using them for large purchases ever since, including a new clothes washer in 2015! I've yet to pay any interest…

I had no idea that existed - definitely going to have to check it out, thanks!

The latest upgrade path for MD2 was in 2016 that's when I upgraded.

  • Thanks to this thread I now have a perpetual for $240. Compared with my (ouch) Adobe subscriptions (I use Indesign for publishing) that seems like excellent value. I haven't used MD but I am really looking forward to using it.

I was finally able to give up the increasingly painful Adobe subscription when Affinity Designer was released on windows - one month of Adobe was about the same cost as a complete program that replaces Illustrator just fine, although the loss of Photoshop still hurts. They have a new program called Publisher in beta that might be worth looking at.

...not sure If I can get credit. and yes 40$ a month is a bit steep (which is why I dropped my old phone plan) paricularly as I am looking at geting an Octane4 subscription when the 2019 release goes live.

Also I read that my system may not have the necessary specs to run the new version  (older i7 and Windows 7 neither which support DX12 - and I refuse to put W10 on my system due to it's ridiculous update policy and feature bloat).

There is that. (I hate the update policy on Win10. Last time I allowed it to update, it broke my network! That's more of a downgrade than an update, as far as I'm concerned.)

It's very very beta so the Affinity Publisher is not worth my time.  I was frustrated, similarly with Affinity Photo as it's missing too many tools I rely on.  Photoshop sub is $10.00 a month and that's worth it to me.

PLUS the old Serif PagePLUS allowed me to build websites with it and with the new Affinity Publisher from what the developers have revealed, they have no intention of putting that code in there so that was that for me.  I get along just fine with Foxit PDF just fine for my needs.  I've moved over to WIX for building websites now and while their tools are lacking here and there it's doable.

I have Affinity Photo, which is great for photos, but I mostly used PS for drawing and general image editing. PS is hands down the nicest raster image editor to use. There are lots that do most of its functions, but none of them feel as nice to me. That said, I bought Clip Studio awhile back to replace PS for drawing, and Designer does basic image editing, so it's mostly just that I really enjoyed Photoshop. But the comparitive costs are pretty crazy if you're not using it a lot.

Rebelle is nice for natural media painting - I haven't done much at all this year, but last year I used it a lot more than Painter.
