New Features:

  1. Sculpting - From the screenshot you can tell it supports alphas so we be Zbrush now.
  2. Adjust Trim Weight - Not sure what that does.
  3. Automated Arrangement Point Creation - Godsend for Daz users.
  4. 3D Sewing - Meh I guess?
  5. UV to Pattern - Totally sold on this one. Imagine you Have 2 Daz shirts and a corset: You like sleeves from one shirt, Frilly bra segment from another, and a corset you like. Instead of messing around with morphs and opacity maps you can just export all 3 items UVs as patterns, adjust them according and sew the together to make one whole cloth simulation. Or imagine that you have a skirt/dress you really like but wish you could attach frills at the end to make it look better.

Overall I think this update is very solid and it will likely make MD8 go to solution for superior cloth simulation of Daz items over dForce.

I'm so hyped for the last feature that I dont feel like working on my Baiken lookalike Kimono robe when I can just stich few Daz items together.

...it mentions Sandy Bridge or newer CPU.  That could be an issue as I have a Nehalem/Blomfield CPU.

If I did get it, I'd go through CLO directly.  Never was really impressed with Steam as finished art is my interest, not game assets.

  • I am also looking forward to MD 8  sculpting which is very interesting perhaps  for certain things no need for Zbrush ?? will have to wait and see !  UV to pattern  is somthing to really get excited about as you pointed out Tryhard, could open up endless possibilities,  adding a UV map to an existing pattern/ garment ???  Perhaps there may be use for all the templates i have floating around on drives :D  So fo me also MD is still the choice of garment/clothes simulation over daz dforce.  I  love the fact that you do not have to wait an age for the simulation to finish and the ability to tweak after the simulation has finished unlike dforce :D

I keep trying to figure out some way that I can afford MD but I just can't see it happening, the $50 a month subscription is way out of my budget.

You can buy one month at a time (or three months as well, I think). Which is what I do - just a month every now and then if I can spare the cash and the time to make good use of the software, rather than making a constant financial commitment to it every month. You can make ever such a lot for your chosen figure(s) in a month, especially if it's for your own personal use and you dont have to rig the garments to the nth degree and can quickly get your money's worth and more.

Ohh thats good to know - thank you.

My income fluctuates quite a bit at times and right now I'm not sure how secure my job is so if it s possible to purchase just a month without commiting myself to anything that might well be possible at some point

I still want it but realistically I have to finish my house DIY 1st to have the clean motivation to sit down learning & using MD for hours on end while gnoring other work I need to do around the house. It'd be super helpful to become more than glancingly familiar with Blender plus rigging & weighmapping in DAZ Studio.

I set aside the money to get the perpetual license months ago, but I've been waiting for Black Friday as I've heard that's been the only time it's gone on sale in the past, and I prefer to save money when I can.

I sure hope buying it this November will mean I get MD8!

Last year it was on sale for a couple of weeks or so around november/december. I got the perpetual for $343 back then.

If you buy version 7 now you get 8 for free so I guess that's the case also if you buy it in november/december.

Hmmm.  My in-laws are usually very generous with Christmas money, and I was debating between MD7 (via Steam) or a new laptop (low end, intended for writing).  If they're as generous as last year, I can get one or the other, but not both.  We'll have to see how the pricing shakes out come New Year's - If MD8 is high enough, they may make my decision for me.

I was just peeking at the MD store, and I see 8 is now being shown as the latest version. There are some videos on the new features, if anyone wants to check it out: https://www.marvelousdesigner.com/learn/learnmd8

And with Black Friday closing in, I'm starting to get impatient! laugh

ETA: I just realized the videos on the MD site are the same ones the OP links to on Steam. (Gibbs Slap!)

Steam is merely the platform to sell it from, its no different than buying from Walmart or Amazon. Steam is just a digital store. Steam sells a lot of general software that is not gaming. Blender is available on Steam. Now you may wonder why since it is free, but Steam is a highly visible store used by millions. When I looked over a year ago Blender had been downloaded by over 800,000 people from Steam. And that is why Marvelous Designer is on Steam, it gives it the most exposure.

Moreover, Steam does not have to run everytime you use MD. Its a common misconception that Steam is DRM and must run when you use any of its programs. While many games do in fact use Steam as DRM, this is a choice made by the game company, not Steam. There are many DRM free games and software on Steam. So you can probably buy Marvelous Designer from Steam and only need Steam for the download, and then never need to run Steam again when using MD. The only exceptions being you might need to install any MD updates from Steam. That's up to the software company as well.

The Steam version costs $320. It doesn't say anywhere if that's a one year license or perpetual or what.  MD on their own site is $300 for a one year license or $500 for perpetual. Like I said, Steam doesn't actually seem to say what you get for the $320. Vased on price, probable aone year license but would be nice if it made it clear.

The Steam version does not allow an upgrade path, so you get that version, and then have to buy again if you want to move on to the next version. I think that is how it worked, probably still the same.

And what about the usage rights? Is it still for personal use only or you could actually sell the creations made with MD 8 ?

That states Commercial but I think it's limited. You need to see the details on MDs website.

    Found this on MD

There is no difference between Personal and Enterprise License other than it is for personal use or use in companies. Like other software, we frequently check the use of Personal License in companies, which will be in breach of the License Agreement. If you are a freelancer, you are eligable for the use of Personal License, however if you are to continue the use of Marvelous Designer in Enterprise conditions, you will have to purchase an Enterprise License.

Thanks for checking this out, Wendy.

I still do not like their statement "for personal use".

isnt the price very different in different countries ?

    it was with MD7

Their past clarificatiosn have made it clear that that means not for a corporate entity - if you are a sole trader, even if you then broker the results through or sell them to a store like Daz, you are making personal use of it and are permitted.

I would just buy the one time fee. It's powerful enough to be worth it. Thats what I did. I dont like bills. I'd rather just own it.

Thanks for the clarification, Richard. It gives me something to consider, then.

  • I had version 7 through Steam, and just got 8 - there's a "Loyalty coupon" for owners of 7 that got me $144 off the price. Very excited to try out the new features!
