As a DAZ Studio, Carrara and Poser owner and user, I can see the utility of each application. However, not everyone that downloads and installs/uses DAZ Studio wants to also buy the other two for what they can do better than Studio, so it does make sense for DAZ3D to invest in improvements that benefit the users of the software they give away; it's even better that they already have invested the time in developing some of these features for Carrara, because that knowledge can be transferred to DS.
Daz has given plenty of reasons for artists to lament. They bought Carrara, evidently for its animation and modeling capabilities, and acquired Bryce for its world creation engine and both programs are languishing in a dark corner. Can you imagine what the Daz experience would be for an artist if these pieces of software were given the attention they deserve and truly integrated into a Daz workflow? Daz3D had the potential to own iClone and its market by covering all the bases. But now, if you want to take a pretty buduoir still image, go to Daz Studio, otherwise forget it. So much squandered potential. But I don't think it's too late. Vue has become a sort of defacto stand-in for Bryce. iClone hasn't matured their figure and asset building system yet and Unity / Unreal haven't really addressed animation. Daz3D as a company has two choices to expand: 1:) They can work to become a "pipeline product". In other words, they can develop the DSON plugin for other professional 3D apps to use Daz figures in animations and moviemaking. 2:) They can develop their in-house software. They already aquired it. Rescue it from the mothballs.
Of course, there is always the third option: Keep doing the same thing and catering to the same market. Maybe that is all Daz3D aspires to.
What does DSON do that can't be done with current export methods? And, why isn't Morph3D (the game model side of DAZ3D) using it, instead of using FBX?
They could do that, but haven't touched Carrara for about 5-6 years.
By the same token, we have no real idea how much effort DAZ has put into trying to enter other markets, so it may look like they aren't trying anything new.

I don't know what sorcery is involved that allows Studio to automatically apply corrective morphs to Daz figures, but I think wolf359 explained pretty well the deficiencies of Daz characters outside their home. It may be due to tools that are given to the content developers. It could very well be that this can be accomplished with FBX, but Daz3D has chosen to protect their secrets and the technology is not allowed to leave Daz Studio. It's quite telling that other companies haven't been able to accomplish this and I don't think it's because there isn't a need for it. Not many people enjoy making their own JCM's. Computer animation has never been more popular, yet most studios have to create and manually fit and skin their own clothing. You can buy a character and wardrobe and be almost instantly ready for production in a day in Daz Studio. Any other way will take weeks.

I'd like to believe that. I want to believe that DAZ is moving that way with a new release of Studio 5, but currently I don't see any barriers from them entering other markets. Look at iClone. They are basically following Daz's model, but they have proceeded to the next step by making it easy for animation producers. They don't have DAZ's unique figure technology or the vast asset market yet, but they stand alone in their share of the market, which is animation production for hobbyists. There is no one else doing what iClone is doing, which is a shame because I think DAZ should be there. The only reason I'm not using iClone now is that I don't want my characters looking like they came out of a video game. Their 3D assets are just not there yet for me. But they are aiming at the gaming market, so...
Unfortunately this thread contains a lot of speculation/guesswork presented with great confidence as if it was fact, from which further flights of speculation are launched. There's also a bit of application bashing going on. We would have preferred to prune the thread and allow the conversation to continue but in this case that doesn't seem possible so it is being locked. There is an existing thread dedicated to wishlisting features for future versions of DS: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/2301/what-features-would-you-like-to-see-appear-in-dazstudio-5/p1
