    Go to My Library/Scripts/Utilities/Create Advanced Iray Node Properties. Select the Plane (It is what I used but I suppose it will also work on any primitive) in the Surface Tab and apply the Iray Uber Base and then run the Iray Node script. That adds a new item under Parameters/Display called Enable Iray Matte with an On/Off button and another item called Iray Handle (I have no idea what that is for but it is a text box and I put Shadow in it but didn't see what difference that made :) ). It acts as a Shadow Catcher for items in the scene without Geometry, like in an HDRI, and allows shadows from the figures to be projected onto the HDRI which are vertical to the ground plane or should be above the ground plane, although those horizontal shadows don't show quite as well as the vertical ones. I then moved and resized the planes to fit where I wanted the shadows, that is the fiddly bit :)

    I was going to ask where to find this script, but after creating the post I decided to look in another library on my computer and there it was, now off to go find out how it works.

    Rendered these in 4.10 and 4.11 Beta to see what the difference was. Used the same settings for both.The only difference, other than render time, I can see is that 4.11 is slightly lighter, you can see it on the hair if you open both in separate tabs and flick between them. The Beta is the same release number as the full one.

    @Fishtales That is a pretty cool technique with the zombies coming out of the ground. I had no idea it was possible to knock out the ground plane like this. Will have to keep that in the back of my mind for future use.

    plus, great render of the Medieval Fantasy room. That has some amazing textures and detail, haven’t really paid so much attention to my render times. I’m curious now.

    It can be a really handy thing to use in some renders.

    I have done a bit more tweaking and have a new render running just now which is at 94% after 23 hours but looked good long before that, I am just letting it run to see how long it will take before changing more things.

    After changing a few things in the bedroom render, and turning off the panel light outside the window, which I didn't realise was there, and turning the distant light/sun back on, I let this next render run. After it had sat at 95% for a long while with nothing looking changed I stopped it.

    Strange one this, although I think I know the problem, the first 50% or so took around three hours and yet look at the finished render time.

    Tried to get the render times down but they were all going for a day or more, although they looked good at 10 hours. I added a Dog 8 with LAMH hair to try a new render, all the settings I left the same.

    Beware the Fire Demons

    I was going to stop it at 10 hours but went to bed instead and let it run overnight.
