  • I can't believe it's been so long since I've had a chance to get in here.  Lots of great renders.  I like the one with the car and the rear view mirror.  That was cool.  I think my favorite is the one with the tiger and the monkeys.  That one is way cool.

After a discussion on Spotlights needing 0000000000's of lumens to work right I set up a scene using one spotlight at 1500 lumens and then it grew into a Genesis 3 Male with cigarette and lit match, the light from the match is Emissive. The background is The Streets of the Wild West.

I continued experimenting with light and render times. Looking at the render times it looks like it is the bright areas that slow the render times and not the lack of light in the images. Only my observations of course but it happens too often in images for it not to be that which is causing it.

    1) 2017-10-08 14:49:47.126 Total Rendering Time: 4 hours 35 minutes 13.30 seconds

Stopped this after it sat at 97% for approx 2 hours.

Third Point Light copied from the other lights and moved into the next building on the right. The disc is visible through the window making it look very bright but I left it to see how much of a difference it would make to the render. There was a significant difference in render time.

    2) 2017-10-08 09:12:32.285 Total Rendering Time: 1 hours 38 minutes 47.58 seconds

Moved light in last window as it was too bright. Doing that dropped the render time by quite a bit.

    3) 2017-10-08 18:26:58.782 Total Rendering Time: 2 hours 30 minutes 13.47 seconds

Changed the time from midnight December 21st to 07:30 am so that there was some ambient light and put a LinearPointLight at 5500 lumens Sphere Geometry Height (Diameter) 200 into the building behind the character. Everything else is unchanged. with the extra light the render time has increased by at least an hour.

Click on image for full size.

    4) 2017-10-08 20:35:00.673 Total Rendering Time: 1 hours 50 minutes 54.14 seconds

Switched off the Point Lights. This dropped the render time by 30 minutes.

All of your renders are great as usual.  I particularly like the cigarette lighting in the night ones.  Amazing how clear your character is despite the fact that the renders are dark.

Thank you. Only one spot and the rest is down to the camera settings in Tone Mapping.

Used another of my own images in these. It is a scan from a photograph so the colours aren't perfect. I used the free Ruined Cottage to see if I could get it to match in with the image which is used as an Environment/Background. I also used Old ChapGeorge Hair and Moustache and the Backpack from Nomad for Genesis. The camera is set to the Exif data from the the camera and the co-ordinates for the place by using Iray GeoLocator.
