I think this is an interesting idea. Maybe a vendor could have a "remake a promo" contest for a range of products, contest rule permits the vendor to select and use any/all/none of the submitted entries as new promo art (in case none really appeal to the vendor's personal taste). One product as prize for winner, potentially multiple submitted renders for multiple products as the "prize" for the vendor.
That doesn't really make sense to me. I mean, don't get me wrong, I kind of like the contest idea - but the way you've thought it out makes it so that the people who enter the contest have to already have the product. That kind of defeats the purpose. I like better perhaps a contest where people just submit some of their best work and the PAs can pick a couple people who's work they like best to do some promos and send them the product(s) they want done.
This doesn't cost the PA anything other than a copy of the product who's promos they want updated and the artist(s) they work with get compensated for their time and promo work by getting a copy of the product. It does take a bit of time on both parties part, so I can see why some PAs might be hesitant to want to do that. It's a thought though. :) I think updated promo images can be a big help, maybe more so than many PAs realize.
Correct, that suggestion would only work if you owned some, but not all, of the group of products the vendor wanted to remake promos for. If you owned all of them there would be no product to win (unless winning was just plain old store credit rather than one of a range of older products).
I'm trying to think of a good way to maximize return for the vendor by providing a far larger choice pool of potential work to choose from. I might have some good work... but I also put out renders that look bad, or ones I think good that simply don't appeal to others. Seeing the actual results BEFORE choosing one, rather than being stuck with whatever results, would be helpful. (although I guess that must be how custom work is done... never really thought about it much.) Perhaps there is a better way.
As someone who's been doing free lance commission art for years, you can't really ask or expect people to work for free in the off chance that they are chosen and MIGHT get compensated for their time and work. You can chose an artist who's work you like and trust that they can get the job done. If it's not to your liking the PA can nicely ask for changes. But holding a "contest" for every product a PA wants updated promo images for isn't really the way to go - imo. It's asking people to again and again create promo images with their time and work on the off chance that theirs is chosen so they perhaps/might be compensated for their time and work.
Artists are constantly asked to work for free, that's really not the way to go.
The PA could have the contestants render something similar to their product, whether it's a vehicle, building, girl, guy, monster, whatever. They could render a freebie if needed of something similar to the product in question. Some people are better at rendering portraits, others are better at large scenes or props...
I'm reposting this again, because the ideas presented once again represents time that can be used working on a new product. Redoing promos AND getting them accepted is only going to net a few sales, nowhere near what you should recoup for this effort. Adding to your promos or updating a product takes it back through the approval and QA process. When you realize that time and effort involved, you'll quickly realize why there are no updated promos and only new products coming in from PAs.
I'm wondering if it's been tried more than once, or at all; folks say it doesn't work, but I've not seen any PA say they've tried it even once; and a fail doesn't mean it was a bad idea.
I'm not saying it should be done, just curious what all the opinions are based on.
I have Poser but I buy most of the old items for DA and I've bought many more old items than new. It's a bonus that I can use them in Poser too.
This is based on PAs doing it before. Just because they don't post it doesn't mean this doesn't happen, and if they did, it seems like it wouldn't be believed anyway. But it's always interesting when customers make these posts like they're actually new ideas.
Go back to page two and Mattymanx specifically stated "I updated multiple products with new promos and honestly dont know if it made a difference." Other PAs have stated that, in their estimation, it's really not worth the time. Given that these are people who would stand to make additional earnings if they thought it would actually work, what possible reason could they have for stating otherwise?
Something that's not getting taken into account here is that even if PA did want to change the images, that new art woluld still have to go through DAZ's approval process as well. And not only is that procedure fairly intense and time consuming, but every step of the process costs money that DAZ has a lot of other potential uses for. It can and has been done... in fact, Zev0 has said that an exceptional render in his current Aging Morphs contest might eventually be used in the promotions, for example... but DAZ hasn't become the biggest name in the 3D content business by spending money where they don't think it's needed and the idea that they'd go for the expense of wholesale refurbishing of a lot of ancient catalog product is highly unlikely.
Finally, and this has to be said, the final issue to be dealt with on the idea of non-PAs producing art with the idea of getting some kind of renumeration is that a lot of those who'd be jumping at the chance to submit new art simply aren't going to produce anything that will actually pass the muster of both the PA and/or DAZ. I can imagine that if a PA DID attempt to do something like this, they'd end up having to spend a lot of time crushing the souls of artists who think that their skill level is a lot higher than it actually is. Who wants to have to deal with that?
Please, be a little less condescending toward the people who help put money in your pocket. We put out suggestions because we want to see you guys succeed, not because we want to harass you or create more work for you for no reason. If we make posts with suggestions like this it's out of wanting to help you guys be more successful - please be less condescending to people who are trying to help. I'm fairly new but I've seen you make rude or condescending comments toward the community before for no reason, and that's one of the reasons I've never bought anything from you. If you don't find the suggestions helpful, you don't have to say anything - or at least you can leave feedback without being rude about it.
I think you have an awesome talent and your work is quite stunning - your characters look great! I really want to buy from you and help support you but dang you make it hard when you leave rude or disrespectful comments so frequently. I'm not saying this out of malice or to hurt you, that's not my intention at all. I'm saying it because I think if I've noticed this than I might not be the only one, and I don't want your sales to suffer because of comments made without caring about how they come across to people only trying to help you.
I respect your work and respect you as a fellow artist and human being and I hope you take this in the spirit in which it's given - the spirit in wanting you to be highly successful and have an abundance of support and sales. :)
The word the poster used was "often", not "always" or usually". And, by default, people who are using Poser do tend to buy the older products here for the simple reason that many of the newer products aren't easily poser compatible. Personally I use just about everything I can get my hands on, from Poser and DAZ specific products to .objs, .vobs, .3dss and even the occasional .skp, and I suspect that most of the people on this forum tend to be the same way, but I've met enough DAZ users in the real world to know that there are a lot of them who'e unlikely to ever use anything that's not plug and play.
Unfortuantely nothing about the truth is condescending. These arguments have been presented many times over the 9 years I've in this community. This is nothing new, despite being told the costs of doing content. It is what it is. Also keep in mind when a previous PA mentioned this information about the cost of redoing promos, their judgement was questioned like they were not being truthful about what they said. I think some may have missed that; respect needs to go both ways.
It depends on how the truth is presented. I get that you have probably heard these suggestions before - many of us haven't. Simply saying something like "We appreciate the suggestions, but we've been given these suggestions before and they have been tried before - unfortunitely it doesn't really make a difference with older content." Or something to that effect - you know what I mean. lol There is no reason to be rude or condescending about it. :) I get it, you're probably tired of non-PAs making suggestions that sound stupid to you. You've probably heard it all and probably want to roll your eyes at us until they nearly fall out of your head. :P But please realize though where these kinds of suggestions come from and that people are trying to help. Please be patient with us and show us respect and we'll respect you and show you our support in return. :)
However you did dodge the 2nd part of my post that you didn't quote where you were presented the information from another PA and it was discounted it like they weren't being truthful As I said, respect really needs to go both ways in a conversation.
Umm What now? I didn't dodge or disregard anyone's comments. Now it just seams like you're trying to be argumentative for the sake of being argumentative. lol Dude, come on now. There is a big difference between leaving suggestions that you may not agree with or want, and leaving rude or condescending comments toward people trying to help.
Correct, and on top of that, I've been here long enough to remember when Victoria 4 was the best female figure available for DAZ Studio or Poser. And at that time, one of my favorite product vendors did all of their products in Poser, including the freebies they gave away on the forum site they used to run.
However I haven't said anything condesencing. I pointed out that these suggestions have been going on for a while now and that's a true observation.
Really? You don't think your comments in this forum are often condescending or rude? You don't think that "it seems like it wouldn't be believed anyway. But it's always interesting when customers make these posts like they're actually new ideas" might be just a little condescending?
If that's what you believe, then I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I said what I said to try and be of help to you, if you don't want to take it or don't care if you are alienating your potential customers, then that's your right. I'm finished arguing with you as it's doesn't appear to be going anywhere. At least no where good. lol And who needs more negativity in their lives? Going to go out and get some coffee and sunshine now. Have a good day. :) I do hope you consider what I said. If not, then ok, at least I tried. :)
If you believe that's condescending I can't do anything about that. I simply made a statement from the years I've been part of this communtity. This serves no purpose, so let's get back to topic.
@divamakeup It's best to use the ignore function for posters who's comments one does not want to see. Otherwise the thread may get closed.
Yeah.
Not everyone is cut out for customer service.
You noticed that too, huh? Which is why there are some artists that I am always happy to buy from, and a those who's products I just flat won't purchase at all.
I prefer the Genesis 2 people right now because for me they have the most versatility... forwards compatability and backwards compatability especially... and most of their skins come with 3Delight shaders/materials ( where most G3 skins are becoming IRAY only more and more ). I've also stopped buying new archetecture/enviroments that have IRAY settings only. I can totally understand that for vendors IRAY and G3 is the hot sell and I don't begrudge them at all for targeting the hot market. But, I bet there's a lot of customers who still buy older stuff.
Shrug. I supply content to serve a need for people wanting male content. Customer service is when that content doesn't work making sure it suits your needs and doing things that are feasible. This is a hobby for me as well, so I will continue to have male content for my renders and those that want unique male will continue to buy at the end of the day. Enjoy your evening. :)
It is not just Daz 3D, other content stores have figures older than Genesis 1 which are still set to their original price, and some of those rather expensive. Genesis 1 is still viable, for using several packages, I can load Genesis 3 clothing on Genesis 2 and 1. And by the number of new Products still coming out for the Gen 4 figures, they are still valid. There are people who love Aiko 3 and they still us it. So Old is a Relative Term, because they are still in demand.
And it isn’t only 3D content, Digital book and Music don’t normally change price. Movies do rarely. Digital content seem to be released at a price and have sales or not, but the base price, never changes.
Back when a phyical stores had finite space for a finite amount of physical goods, putting X on sale, to move it out of the store to make way for the newest widget, made sense. Digital Content doesn’t take more physical space. If you add more Digital products, add storage to your store. Because of this I am amaze anything is ever deleted from the store.
There are a few vendors who make a product and then after x time Remove it from the store. Disney and their Vault. Movies that go into the Vault Triple in price on Amazon, because they have just become a rare item. If you do this often enough, you can create a furor over your product, because people know they have to buy now or miss out. Movies that Disney says will be going to to the Vault suddenly have increased sales.
So no I am not surprised that Daz 3D content does not drop in price, because that would go against the Market trend.
The one thing I will say for Daz 3D, most things go on sale on the store and if you wait you buy get them at a greatly reduced price. Anyone remember the 2011 Vault sale?
Isn't this where some forum veteran posts a gif clip of Michael Jackson with his feet across the back of the movie theatre chairback eating popcorn with some witty words of wisdom?
Truth is the way the DAZ Store is done is antiquated. While the old $1.99 PC+ things I'll buy I'll buy with old ad copy the way new ad copy is presented gives me no confidence in the products. There need to be a standardized series of renders in a standardized lit environment for these products really. I've pretty much decided I needed buy any more Generation 3 products because they aren't differentiated enough to justify the expense or at least that appears to be the case based on the ad copy. I only own two Pro bundles. Oh, I don't know - render them from 4 sizes bald and wearing the Genesis 3 Starter Essentials underwear and then the PA / DAZ chosen glamous shots for the main flyers.
Another thing to consider is that when a PA releases a new product, their entire store gets promoted and put back on sale but when older products get updated or new promos, there is no promotion. While one can post here in the forums, a very small percentage of customers visit the forums. So we have to choose where best to spend out time, and time and time again, its making new content.
I have updated 6 products with new Iray promos to help me learn Iray and because I wanted to. There is no eveidence in my sales that suggest that the new promos have made the sets sell more then before.
It would be nice if DAZ Store allowed PA to create their own sales periodically.
Sone of the older products have use to have 5 to 10 promo images, with makeup differences, The model in different poses and hairs; to having One promo shot. Due to the lack of images it is hard differentiate between products. Some of the Products like the V3 Morphing Face Mask textures which work on the Genesis Face mask, have been re-rendered and updated. I often look at the Texture sets for products, for they give a better idea of what the clothing, footwear, or what have you, looks like.
Want to have fun, take Victoria 3 with the High Res skin, take the texture through something like Crazy bump and make a Normal Map and several others. Then assemble a PBR Iray skin using them. Makes Victoria 3 something new.
