  • I miss Barney's Coffee shops.  Some of them got bought out by Charbuck$ and I never went back.  The others just gradually disappeared over a couple years.

You could buy Barney's whole-bean coffee from all around the world.  Their Kona was the best.  Barney's coffee was almost as expensive as Charbuck$ (I refuse to spell it the "corporate way"), but much tastier.  And more affordable if you just buy a 1/2 pound to a pound and brew it at home.

My favorite coffees right now include 8 O'Clock Whole Bean (yeah, go figure!), Dunkin Donuts regular Whole Bean, and Jo-Jo's Java.  My top favorite is Gevalia Traditional Roast Whole Bean.  Once in awhile I find Barney's Breakfast Blend, Hazelnut, or Santa's White Christmas, but never in whole bean anymore, so I usually don't bother.

Coffees I can't even smell without getting dry heaves:  Starbucks (just about anything), Peets (What is that, charcoal?), and Seattle's Worst (What is THAT, spent uranium?)

My work substituted Seattle's Best a few years back.  They got so many complaints that they didn't even let the stock run down; they just came and replaced it all one night.  I think Seattle's Best was there only for a single day.  God, that stuff was worse than used motor oil!

  • I don't understand going to Starbucks when there's a locally-owned coffee shop. There are so many excellent coffee roasters now that even in a relatively small town, you should be able to get a quality pour-over. A cortado from someplace like Metropolis, Bowtruss or Asado is going to be so much better than one from Starbucks: small batch beans, carefully roasted based on environmental considerations (like humidity, which varies hour-to-hour), and a shot pulled by somebody with the training to do it right. Then again, I recently paid $8 for a 4 shot medium latte in Manhattan, so my coffee priorities might be entirely screwy. (I'm not going to say how much I paid for a single cocktail, mainly because it would have paid for one of the Stonemason sets on my wishlist, so I might cry.)

Why does coffee or tea or coffee related beverages make me want to visit the ladies room after drinking it?

I do not remember ever having a caffeine crash, if that is what it is called.  I think at the rate of calming down since drinking coffee this morning, I will, if ever, crash at four or five in the morning.   I am still very hyper and I finished my coffee around eleven this morning.   I am a bit too hyper to eat my lunch.  I probably should not have any more caffeine today if I can help it.  I probably should start thinking about how to calm myself down so by midnight I will be snoring instead of singing.  Not that I want to snore but my roommate probably would like it better if I am snoring than singing on the top of my lungs the ABC song.

A good rule of thumb is - all coffee has caffeine unless it says Decaf.

... And roasting makes no difference to the amount of caffeine, only how strong it tastes.

Does decaf coffee really not have any caffine or is that just a myth?

  • nonesuch00nonesuch00 Posts: 18,762

Ice Coffee has caffeine.  Decaf coffee has trace amounts of caffeine, not enough to disrupt your sleep. Bottom line is if you don't drink coffee or eat or drink caffeinated foods and drinks for 3 days and don't get a headache in those 3 days you aren't that heavy into caffeine.

We had a StarBucks & it actually went out of business despite being located in the busiest parking lot in town. Some local coffe company instead has expand from 2 to 4 stores and other local businesses that sell coffee have sprung up too. It is try that they just buy the blends wholesale, nothing is done on premise. And it's not like this town is one of those looking down their noses at corporate America, Wal*Mart and all the other big businesses are here but for what ever reason they didn't want StarBucks. I don't think I've had coffee since winter 1993.

Apparently lorazepam is not the same as melatonin for getting to sleep after having coffee. I miss my melatonin.

    Coffee misconceptions and fun facts!

The darker the roast the stronger it is!
***  Stronger flavor? Yes.  More caffeine? No (The longer and darker the beans are roasted the more caffeine cooks off.  That is why breakfast blend coffees are generaly lighter roast.  ***

Iced coffee has espresso in it.
***  Only if you ask for it to be added.  Iced Coffee is brewed at double strength then diluted with Ice before refrigeration.  ***

PreGround coffee is just as good as whole bean!
***  The longer coffee sits in the ground state the more bitter it becomes (possibly because of oxidization?). This is easy to prove for yourself, go buy a bag of whole bean and a bag of ground of the same coffe(I don't mean have Starbucks grind it on the spot and use that as the preground, I'm talking like go to walmart and get one that was ground then sat in a warehouse for a while), take them home and try brewing a pot of fresh ground, then switch over to a pot of preground.  You will tase a big difference.

    What is Cold Brew Coffee?
***  Cold brew coffee is brewed start to finish at room temperature.  1. Use double the normal amout of beans at a corse grind level.  2. Combine water and grounds in a container and place in a cool dark place for 24 - 48 hours depending on the strength that you want.  3. Remove grounds from container and filter any remaining grounds while moving coffee into a pitcher.  4. Place in refrigeration.
Cold Brew Coffee is the #1 most caffeinated way of drinking coffee, but at the same time it is also the easiest coffee for sensitive stomachs because it is not acidic. (the temperature changes in traditional brewing brings out the acidity in coffee)
It is recommended to dilute your cold brew 50/50 with water before consumption.  If you ever try drinking it at 100% strength, you will understand.  For my personal use I usualy do 50% Cold Brew 25% water and 25% Half&Half.

Good news the caffeine is starting to wear off and the anti anxiety medicine is starting to kick in.  I do hope no one tries to wake me up at six am which is seven hours away.

In bed now and about to listen to that audio book that puts me to sleep.

If it gets really bad add something acidic to the baking soda, either lemon juice or white vinegar.    Great for all sort of jobs around the house.  Baking soda with a few drops of essential oil (your fave smell) makes a good dry shampoo for a carpet.   Sprinkle it over evenly, leave for a while then the vacuum up.  You may need to clean the filter on the vac after use, depending on wht sort of vacuum cleaner you use.
