Daz Studio Storing Morphs in wrong folder.
Daz Luhrmann said:
To rule out any morph blocking issue, which is when morph with same name will block the correct morph in correct path from loading, I would suggest removing all non-custom morphs (particularly the HD morphs) from that 'Voluptuous Toned' folder.
Oooo, yeah, that is a no can do. This is what I tried above by deleting the WHOLE folder and what caused this mess in the first place. Most of my older figures will not work as they are calling for morphs that are in that folder. The thing is that (for some reason), the figures I created seemed to be saving the morphs and settings to THAT folder rather then where they should be. However, once I have moved that folder (which was in 2020), it seems the newer characters I created have stopped accessing that folder, but there are a great many older characters I still use and they want to see that folder. So, as of now, I have not found a way to delete the folder without damaging my characters. Granted, they are damaged anyway since there is a problem with the HD morphs., but I don't know how to fix the problem so that the characters access the morphs from the CORRECT folder and not the Voluptuous Toned one.
Then if Daz Studio sitll has a problem calling them, search your directory to check if they are already installed in your main Daz3d directory. If not, you can reinstall them using DIM or Daz Central to your main Daz3D content directory, or howsoever people install content these days.
I have tried this as well, by removing and reinstalling the Genesis 8 Female Head Morph package. It didn't work. And I know you are probably going to say delete both the package and the Voluptuous Toned folder at the same time and then reinstall the morph package. While that might work on initial thought, the problem is that the characters are going to look for the morphs where the Voluptuous Toned folder was and thus I will get an error and (of course) the morph will not load because it isn't there.
(Before removing the morphs from Voluptuous Toned folder, temporarily copy them somewhere else so can easily restore them back if causes more issues.)
This was effectively what I had done when I removed the folder in the first place. However, I didn't know what was happening when I initially deleted the folder. Luckily I had a back up of the folder elsewhere, albeit, it wasn't a current backup. Nevertheless I installed it anyway just to get my characters back. But because that was an 'old' backup, it was missing things and that was where my problems started. I have tried to fix many of the characters manually, but I can't get them 100%. Further, I am still stuck with this Voluptuous Toned folder.

DS doesn't save or care about the drive letter, the paths are relative, ie. the base folder is whatever folder you have specified as Content Library.
Yes, this I know about and is probably the culprit of most of the issues that I am having with Daz. If they went with a more 'normal' specified path with a drive letter, I don't think I would have been in this mess in the first place. That being said, the said "Voluptuous Toned" folder has grown large enough that I cannot put it back on the C: drive and, frankly, I don't want it there.
In a nutshell, I need to figure out what in Daz Studio (main program) is damaged that I cannot load many HD morphs. I know it is related to the Voluptuous Toned folder issue and that leads me to the next thing. I want to get rid of that folder without causing further damage to my characters.
I am worried that I might have to uninstall / reinstall Daz Studio. But if I go that far, I just need to know what I have to do to keep my data intact as I don't want to loose everything.
To my knowledge, this problem seems to be only affecting Genesis 8 Female figures, everything else is fine. Pretty much everything that didn't access that folder seems to be fine, with the exception of certain morphs. But I have noticed that some bought only characters, the morphs stopped working on as well, such as Alexandra 8. However, another HD figure I bought at around the same time as Alexandra was Sydney and her HD morphs are working fine. Keep in mind this is from load a fresh unaltered character.
Here is part of the log file from loading a fresh Alexandra 8 character and moving some of her HD morphs controls around. Note the references to the Voluptuous Toned folder.

It is usually correct, most errors are minor, with the occasional oopsie. Note that most older Poser content has no metadata supplied, unless there was a DAZ Studio version included. Sometimes. All installed content gets a Product entry by default even without any supplied metadata, but might not add much more than a list of assets.
The Content Library pane will show you what is physically installed, and where to find it. It should match what "Show Installed Files" from DIM will display. Not 100% sure where DIM gets the list of files (manifest.dsx in the zip, or the Manifest Archive file created at install time, probably the latter), but it compares that to the actual folder structure on disk. Valid files are blue hyperlinks, invalid or missing files are black italic text. Note that the Manifest Archive files contain the absolute path to where the content was last installed, which might not be where you want it now.
In your screencaps, you are showing the "Available" tab from Smart Content. Is it the same on the "Installed" tab (all B/W thumbnails)? In the Content Library Products view (A-Z list), are there coloured thumbnails?
Installing Daz on a DIFFERENT drive... no other instructions seems to be workingWhile I do not share the antipathy of soem to Daz Connect and all its works, there is no point in having daz Studio go online if you are installing through Install Manager - that way you won't get anything for products that are not installed. If you right-click on one of the items in the Installed tab of Install Manager it will have the option to Show installed files, which should confirm where they were initially placed. If you check the Content Library pane under Daz Studio Formats>My Daz 3d Library you should see any folders and files DS can see. If theer is a mismatch between available files and available products that indicates a problem with the database - possibly from installing to the nested sub-folder. In that case it may be better to reset the database and reimport metadata, after first exporting user data if you have done any categorisastion or saved any files on this system - all these functions are available in the Content Library option menu (the lined button in the top corner, or right-click the tab)>Content DB Maintenance.
importing blender objects in daz..well you have diffuse overlay weight 100% and then dont show what's in your diffuse overlay slot, so hard to really say whats wrong. Just use default iray uber shader setup (e.g., PBR mode rather than weighted and remove the weighted overlay stuff from your shader)
Daz will import obj with default iray uber shader set up on load btw, but to ensure that happens properly, make sure you DONT check the box for 'read materials' on Importing obj, because daz will make a mess of the shader when trying to put in textures from the .mtl file associated with your obj.
Can you replace one figure with another? If you don't want to go the preset route (so many buttons to click...) you can try...
1) Make you first scene and save it.
2) When saving it, you will be asked if you want to "Include Background Color, Include Backdrop Image, Include Render Settings" and "Compress File." Select as desired.
3) Create your new scene.
4) Import your old scene by right clicking on the .duf file in Content Library Pane.
5) Select the "Merge into Scene" option from the drop down. This will merge in the options you checked from the other save file (including render settings, so it will override your current file).Without knowing exactly what you want to do in order to replace the figures, this is the only thing I can think of to help. Best of luck!

so... solution: manually add the textures to obj whenever needed
No. The solution is to manually set up the textures on the obj once and then save it to the library as a DAZ asset.
Hmm, I clearly missed the part of OP's post where they said they were talking about Daz Studio...
The OP didn't specify what programs they're working with, but if the programs are only now adding OBJ import capabilities, they're clearly not talking about DS.
Finding What I WantNot really. Regardless of if you use the Content Library or Smart Content you will run into stuff being categorised wrong or stored in odd places. Ideally, products and assets would have much more metadata to help people find things.
Gen8 character convert to gen9My steps:
Load G9 dev load

set clone of the G9 dev load as Genesis 8 male
set the Thigh bends Side-side of the G9 dev load (around 6 and -6 degrees respectively) to match the G8 dev load
Hide the G8 dev load
Select the G9 dev load
Export it to obj
Hide the G9 dev load
Show the G8 dev load
Import the G9 obj
click Hamburger icon
click Assets
click Transfer utility
set From source the G8 dev load
set Target source the G9 obj
Uncheck parent to source figure
Hide the G8 dev load
then select the G8 dev load (thru Scene tab)
Dial in G8 head / body morph to be transferred
Select the G9 obj
Export it to obj (as morph obj)
Delete the G9 obj
Del the G9 dev load
Load G9 default

set Reverse deformation yes
Dial in the transferred morph
start Joint editor
Right click work space
click Adjust rigging to shape (must adjust orientation)
Right click the transferred morph in parameter pane
click Edit mode
then ERC freeze
set transferred morph to 0
Save the transferred morph as morph asset
Don't ask me why the steps are like these, I just know these steps work for me. I come up with these steps after summarizing and testing the tutorials and videos posted in DAZ Forum.

It should show some messages on startup too (I think. I am away from my Daz computer until Saturday too). But it is strange that it is not even filling in the stats message. How did you install TL? If Daz Connect, try uninstalling, delete the files from the cloud folder for TL, and then installing with DIM.
I install via DIM only. (I followed the advice in this thread and logged in to update the metadata though.)
But I think I've come a fair bit further in investigating my issue with TL. (And yes I write my issue because only a certain workflow reveals it.)
As I already mentioned I work with instances. With every Instance DAZ Studio creates a new folder in the registry named Studio4PublicBuild[<instance>] There every setting goes and after refreshing (which I didn't do in my first test this week) I can even see the TL entries. However - if I close the instance of DS the instance folder gets emptied completely. (I'm still working with DS 4.16.1.31 - might be an issue with that particular version, because I see folders with higher instance numbers still having entries so I assume there once had been a version of DS which left the settings.) On starting an instanced run of DS the data from the non-instanced folder gets copied into the empty instance folder. This also explains why I have to do all my setting of DAZ Studio itself (layout, folder start positions etc...) in the non-instanced run.
Therefore I ran TL manager in the non-instanced DS - e voila - now TL knows that it doesn't have to scan again in no regard of how many instances I have running. I only must ensure that I do the re-scan and everything I want to have saved to the registry in the non-instanced run of DS. Might look a bit inconvenient - it is - but I'm used to this workflow anyways. I´m sorry I could have guessed that in the first place but I didn't know that DS so heavily relies on the registry. Still I'm grateful for that lesson and happy that you suggested to investigate the registry.
One not too far day in the future I will update to the current version of DS and check if handles instancing still the same. If so, I might consider writing a scrpt which helps me saving the data to the non instanced version.
Oh wow, I would not have thought of that. Makes perfect sense though. I am glad you got it working.
MTL - Surface parametersFlorian6C said:
Hello everybody.
I spent a lot of time looking for information on this subject and I'm getting nowhere. I try to import small 3D object in .obj format. I found many information about texture images and map but nothing clear about coefficient. My GPU is cheap so it hard to see the impact of each parameter in Iray view.
Is there a correspondence table between the coefficients of the MTL files and those of the Surface tab ?
OBJ: Ka_Kd_Ks_Ns_d_Tf_Ni_illum...
DAZ: Base color_glossy color_Translucency weight_Glossy reflectivity_...Thank you for your help. I know there is a lot to learn by myself but I am a bit lost and my english is a bit poor; so all these parameters are a nightmare for me.
Never thought about the actual parameters. IMHO the most important stuff are the maps, that are in the MTL file.
However I found some descriptions here: http://paulbourke.net/dataformats/mtl/
As an example I dowloaded the 1K Blender version of this free screwdriver asset.
I used Blender to convert it to the OBJ format.
This is the resulting MTL file:
# Blender 3.3.1 MTL File: 'flathead_screwdriver_1k.blend'
# www.blender.orgnewmtl flathead_screwdriver
Ka 1.000000 1.000000 1.000000
Ks 0.500000 0.500000 0.500000
Ke 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000
Ni 1.450000
d 1.000000
illum 2
map_Kd textures/flathead_screwdriver_diff_1k.jpg
map_Ns textures/flathead_screwdriver_rough_1k.exr
map_refl textures/flathead_screwdriver_metal_1k.exr
map_Bump -bm 1.000000 textures/flathead_screwdriver_nor_gl_1k.exrI imported the OBJ into Daz Studio and two of the maps were already loaded:
map_Kd was set to IRAY►Base►Diffuse►Reflection►Base Color
map_Bump was set to IRAY►Base►Bump►Base Bump , but with the parameter set to 0
The other two were missing.
I changed the following:
I removed the map from IRAY►Base►Bump►Base Bump and instead put it into IRAY►Base►Bump►Normal Map
I put the map from map_refl into the following property: IRAY►Base►Diffuse►Reflection►Metallicity and set the value to 1
I put the map from map_Ns into the following property: IRAY►Base►Glossy►Reflection►Glossy Roughness and set the value to 1
This example also shows the most important maps for materials that are not transparent.
I hope this helps!

DazStudio 4.21 won't use GPU to renderWhat is in the scene you are trying to render? Near the beginning of your log file it says:
"Geometry import (1 triangle object with 65 M triangles"
65 million triangles is a lot of geometry. You are probably running out of memory, just like the log files says further down.Open a new scene and create a primitive cube (on the Create menu) with 1 division. Does that render?

Do OBJ Files Contain Textures?Software applications I work with apparently will soon be upgrading to where you can import OBJ files and work with 3D objects. But... do OBJ files contain texture and color information? I'll less excited if this is not the case. Thanks
Merging surfaces and removing unneeded verticesThanks atoxic for confirming what I seemed to be finding. Really puts a downer on Hex for me.
In case others read this thread, and are looking for their own work-arounds, here's a quick summary of what I do.
I use AC3D as my modeling tool. Might not be the worlds best but I find it very intuitive and fast. AC3D, Hexagon and DAZ all store their .obj objects in different vertex orders, so it's never as simple as work in one, export and re-import into the other. Even a base geometry update of a mesh in DAZ cannot be done from a Hex export. In all instances the work flow has to be import any model into DAZ and export it again from DAZ if you wish to re-import it into an exitsing DAZ model in some way (morphs, geom updates, UV sets, blah, blah, blah). The exception is using the Hex bridge for DAZ morphs where, provided there are no "count" changes to the mesh (vertices, edges, faces) the bridge correctly re-casts the hex model into the DAZ vertex order.
For a base geom update sculpted in Hex, I bridge back to DAZ as a prop, export the prop as an .obj then used that exported .obj to do the base geom update.
Klunky, but at the end of the day, it works without mangling the model.

Problem with "RSSY Hair Converter from Genesis 2 Male to Genesis 8 Male"1. Right click on the product icon - Edit Metadata.
2. Check the Hair Type
3. Execute the script, add the Basic Hair from the folder where it locates. See if it has the correct Type. If it's correct, click Force Convert Item to convert it~Problem with "RSSY Hair Converter from Genesis 2 Male to Genesis 8 Male"Did you install Basic Hair product by using DIM? If you manually dump the product files to your library, the script will not work as the hair must have a Type - Follower/Hair... The 'Type' is defined in the product metadata which is imported by DIM.
