Where is the line drawn though? Say I take the base geniuses 3 female and morph it until until it's unique and visual appearance is unlike anything published in the store expect for the fact that it resembles a human. Now say I export the file obj and so on to be worked on in another program altering the figure further. There's nothing left of the skeleton I've lowered my poly count my mesh is altered. It can't be reversed back into the original geniuses form all likenesses are gone. Using daz as nothing more than a base reference for the human anatomy. At what point does my endless hours of work constitute as my own design.

When you start with your own mesh and not anything made by DAZ or a PA

I understand your point but would it not be a different mesh at that point, what say someone imports the mesh into blender, deletes and rearranges vertices into a perfect sphere? If I melt down a gold ring, and cast it into my own design it wouldn't be infringing any kind of copyright. It be incredibly hard for the previous jeweler to make a case for it.

  • A Couple of Observations About DAZ3D Sales

Haiku's my favourite figure and I had the same issue for ages: even if Haiku went on sale, Keiko was really expensive. Eventually I bought Haiku on some super sale even though I couldn't use it, and then waited until eventually Keiko also turned up for super cheap (I think it was black friday or something.) I still don't have the mega manga bundle even though it's been on really tempting sale several times because by the time it was on sale, I'd already bought up all of the characters in the bundle separately on sale. Of course that does mean you have to want a product enough to actually wait it out and hopefully not lose interest before then.

The lack of incentive to buy bundles when you already own the key parts is a bit of a shame, but oh well, less purchasing done! The insane markup on base figures is also a longstanding issue, but that was also solved by just stopping shopping. I really like Thorne characters, but I skipped the past few bases that are basically just a PA character being sold at double the price. On the other hand, since Sage was released the other day at normal PA prices, I bought it straight away even though I don't really need it.

(This is solely personal opinion, but I think Keiko 6 has the best proportion balance for modern anime styles, and Haiku is just Keiko's body with a changed head and additional facial morph options which look a lot nicer to me than Keiko's default face, and it's a shame there's still no Genesis 3 equivalent.)

So, anyway, if I'm having issues with other morph appliers failing to change anything.... what should I check next?  And if I need to apply a trouble ticket, where do I do that?

  • Shaping appliers broken (was: Frustrated with Growing Up for Genesis 3)

Hmmmm... well, loading Satyrn Human (from the Satyrn character), and then going to Smart Content > Shaping and double-clicking the Satyrn Fantasy Ears 02 morph applier there... or any of the other Satyrn related appliers, such as Satyrn !Head, yields no visible change to the character either.  I tihnk something is preventing appliers from working altogether.  oO

Interesting. In the parameters tab on the right, select the figure name and scroll through all the morphs. Make sure the morphs are at least working. You can set the youth morph to 100% to basically do the same thing as the 05-06 shaping preset.

Not a great solution, but at least it identifies whether you can access shaping via the morph dials. IF so, then it's just the double clicking on the preset icons failing to work...which is weird.

  • Facegen now on sale...get it!

Some tips from this thread that have really helped me:

-People will often tilt their head slightly to one side for a portrait, out of habit or to conceal those subtle asymmetrical features that Facegen (and its users) want to capture. If your reference photo has this going on, consider rotating it in your 2D pic editor of choice until the chin is level with the bottom of the image, then cropping if needed.

-Facegen cares more about the dots being lined up with each other than about them exactly at the locations on the face that it's asking you to pinpoint. Try to make sure each pair of dots align vertically, and are roughly the same horizontal distance from the center of the face. For the jawline dots, it doesn't want the corner of the jawline: it wants the outer edge of the jawline one the same vertical plane as the corners of the mouth.

-go to modify/demographics and move shape/caricature to Typical or near-Typical. Consider doing the same for the Asymmetry slider.

    Some new tips from me:

-you get better results going to modify/shape and adjusting the sliders to match the profile view you're using as a reference photo than you get actually trying to apply dots to a profile photo.

-Be careful of face paint/facial makeup in unexpected places (Native American ceremonial paint, Indian tikkas and bindis). Facegen doesn't seen to be thrown that badly by catseye eyeliner or aggressively shaped lipstick as long as you lay down the dots carefully, but when I tried to do a Indian celebrity with a bindi, it turned it into a faint reddish blur on her forehead.

-If you are dealing with a full-face image where the person has strabismus (eyes pointing in slightly different directions) or isn't looking straight ahead, or isn't looking straight ahead because they're trying to hide their strabismus, plant the eye dots on the lower part of the iris (below the pupil) as close to the horizontal center point of the eye as you can manage. You may not get useable eye textures out of this, but unless the subject has an incredibly rare eye color or unusual color to the eye-whites, useable eye textures should be a very low priority next to a good morph and a not-ridiculous skin color.

-If your full-face shot is more like a 7/8 or 11/12ths angle view, with one of the jawline edges partially obscured, or the lighting does something similar to one side of the face, your best bet is to place the jawline and cheekbone dots on the obscured side in line with the opposing counterpart dots (same vertical plane, equivalent horizontal distance from center). This is easier to do if the obscured side is on your right (what would be the subject's left; I believe FaceGen refers to it as such), because the second dot of each pair is always on that side. If the less clear side of the image is on your left (subject's right) consider flipping the images.

  • Need any clear tutorial about making JCMs in DS 4.9

Hi to all. I need some help about making JCM and MCM correctives for Genesis 3 in DAZ Studio 4.9, because the only existing tutorial  is Creating Joint Controlled Morphs (WIP) from Documentation, which is outdated long ago and miss some important details. It mentioned the old Property Editor Pane, which is no more in the newer DS versions. I found the Property Hierarchy and Parameters Tab (Edit Mode) do work instead of this old panel, but the rest of the tutorial seems to be outdated too. In particular, I try to make several JCMs for the transferred Michael 6 body shape (transferred to Genesis 3 Male) and cannot make these JCMs to work along with that body morph and with native Genesis 3 JCMs. As an example, I set Michael 6 Body morph to 100%, bend Left Collar to 50 degrees up and import a slightly enhanced JCMM6CollarUpL, according to the first part of that tutorial. What should I do next to turn on this morph automatically when Michael 6 Body is 100%, the bending value is 50 and the native JCM for the left collar is on? After all my attempts to drag the morph slider under appropriate lines in Property Hierarchy lead to nothing so far - I don't know how to make ERC freeze for all these options in the new JCMM6CollarUpL morph. So it doesn not follow the bending collar.  Definetely, there is a need in the more detailed step-by-step tutorial for DAZ Studio 4.9. What should I do in the Property Hierarchy to set up all these options for a JCM correctly and how to freeze them before saving a JCM for G3F or G3M?

The same is true about MCM (Morph controller morphs) - is there any significant changes in DS 4.9, in comparison to the old tutorial?

  • Facegen now on sale...get it!

If anyone's having issues with fibremesh facial hair or brows not conforming to a Facegen morph on Genesis3, and you have GenX2, try exporting the morph to Genesis2 in Facegen, and then transfer the morph from Genesis2 to Genesis3 using GenX2. It seems to have fixed the problem for me, anyway.

  • Victoria 6 vs 7

In specific reference to the Victorias, bear in mind that both figures have been given away free on multiple occasions in various promotions. I don't think I'd want to spend a lot on either Victoria figure at this part of the release cycle.

You can learn hands-on about many of the differences between Genesis2 and Genesis3 by using the base figures that come free with DAZ Studio. They are both very good. If you want to explore further, the body, face and expression morph packs might offer you more value than just one figure. The Victorias (like most of the DAZ made figures) use unique custom UVs, so an alternative you might like to consider is one of the many vendor (published artist) products that use the base figure UVs. It makes it a bit easier to swap skins.

  • Victoria 6 vs 7

I bypassed G3 because of a few objections - (1) I really don't like V7's face as much as V5 and V6, because I use these as a springboard for dial-spinning my own characters.  M7's face is nice but his smile looks fake.  M5 is a hunk. Gianni 6 is cook but Gianni 7 - yuck.  (2) I don't like the reduced polygons.  (3) There doesn't appear to be as many musculature morphs available without having to buy extra morph packs.

So I decided to wait for G4.  I started Daz when G1 was out and have heavily invested in G1 and G2.  That being said, I am planning to pick up the G3/G2 UV conversions, because I want to be able to use the skins from V4 on up.  Also, if I really want some of the shapes for V7/M7 in G4, I can pick up one of the Legacy packs.

It is likely that I will not invest as heavily in G4, either.  I'm one of those people who still makes use of old runtime, even V4/M4.  For example, unless I need G4 children or old people, I probably won't pick up growing up or aging morphs because I can use the G1 or G2 and they look fine.  I would pick up as many body and face morph kits as possible for versatility.  I can always update the surfaces to improve the look.

I have certain uses for the Daz characters for my book, and since there simply isn't product out there that meets my style exactly, so I'm looking into creating my own (clothes and some characters).  I have a feline race in mind and was originally going to create it for G2, but now I will probably do it for G4 and maybe try to sell it if it looks good enough.

Lastly, I'm curious if they will offer Victoria 8 for free the same way they did for Victoria 7.  I missed that by one day (grrr), so I will be watching closely.

  • (Commercial) My new product Adele for Genesis 3 is available at the store

Thanks so much for sharing your renders Bohor, they look fantastic !!!!

Thank you very much Virtual World for the compliments, but Adele is a real nice character to work with. You've made a fine piece of art here!
I've made a few more renders of her without changes on the morph (out of the box).

Lol! Indeed it will keep me busy!

I think an Alicia V. morph is doable and will give it a shot. Regarding Gemma I was confusing her with another girl but now that I see her I understand the alienesque look, and will be next in line.

  • Is there a way to edit scene files without Daz Studio?

This should be up to the task: https://www.daz3d.com/dson-editor

Edit: If you tell me the items you want to change, I can load one of my files and show you what it looks like.

Wow, thanks, I don't remember seeing this item yet.
I have the wrong head morph on. :-/ The change would be Belle Head 100% to Belle Head 0% and Kori Head 0% to Kori Head 100%. I need to redo 30-40 files that each have heavy natural elements (trees, grass, flowers etc.), and thus take a really long time to load.
(I even know how I messed this up, I just don't know how I haven't noticed it before... :))

  • Victoria 6 vs 7

Victoria 5=based off the all-purpose, androgynous Genesis base figure.

Genesis 2 came with separate male and female base figures. Superior skin and sculpture realism, allegedly superior bends, though I can't say I noticed the bending being all that impressive the few times I played with Genesis 2. The main thing Genesis 2 has going for it over Genesis 3 IMO is a more varied and creative wardrobe (although with the right addons you can use alot of them on Genesis 3). It is also less complicated to use V4/M4 and Genesis 1 skins on Genesis 2 than on Genesis 3. People who know more about animation than I do say that there are major unresolved issues on animating with Genesis 3.

Victoria 6=based on Genesis 2 Female.

Genesis 3 also comes with separate male and female base figures. The addition of Iray, an unbiased renderer similar to Lux/Octane, as a base Daz Studio tool meant that they really upped their game IMO in terms of overall realism on Genesis 3. First real improvement in bends that I've seen since V4/M4. Also autofitting (with the right addons, like Wear Them All) is alot less crappy than it was in Genesis 1's time, so borrowing clothes from earlier figures (except for shoes, armor and maybe capes) is a lot more viable than it used to be. Genesis 3 is supposedly a simpler mesh than the previous characters, using textures and normal maps to make up the difference, so you can have more stuff in a scene without it crashing (allowing for the memory intensiveness of Iray). It requires more complicated addons to get older skins onto Genesis 3, and a special addons to the GenX morph transfer tool to transfer older characters.

Victoria 7=based on Genesis 3 Female base figure.

Aesthetically, you'll have to make up your own mind. I feel like Genesis 3 has produced more interesting and attractive male characters than Genesis 2, maybe marginally less attractive women than Genesis 2. But I have weird taste, and you should NOT judge by me.

Does anyone know where I can get a free or low cost fang morph for the lateral incisors for DAZ "The Girl"? I can give her fangs for the canine, and Grrl! Plus has fangs for teh central incisors, but I think using the lateral incisors looks better. .

and you can of course also drape it using bullet physics in Carrara if just a drape!

if you want him posed use transfer utility in DAZ studio first on a M4 robe with handles converted to weightmapping as the source.

then fit it to M4 and roughly pose with the handles convert to prop, M4 too maybe then run a drape on it in Carrara.

what you can also do is drape it on M4 in a tpose and then rig the obj export to him as a conforming item either in Poser's set up room or in DAZ studio after converting M4 to weightmapping under edit and using the transfer Utility.

you need it if exporting dynamic cloth from Poser as an animation.

If you are just wanting one frame to create a morph, an obj export is just as good

they had some hacking issues on Carrara Cafe so login may not be possible you may need to contact Jetbird on this forum.
