Geoshell compatibility between generations

dracorndracorn Posts: 2,384

I have been able to convert geoshells between Genesis, G2, G3 and G8, forwards and backwards.  I have found that G9 geoshells don't backwards convert to G8.

Does anybody have any tips for this, or an answer as to why I can't use a G9 geoshell on G8?

G3 and G8 compatibility makes sense, as they use basically the same UVs.

G1 and G2 have similar enough surface boundaries they can be given UVs that work for the other texture types, and you might have those from various products.

I would not however expect compatibility between those sets, or indeed to G9, as they move surface boundaries. I'm not even sure that with something like Cayman Studios' geograft UVs it's going to work right.

Thanks.  I tried it with Cayman Studios G9 to G8.  It didn't work.

    Good idea, though.

You can simply rig an OBJ of G9 onto G8 with Transfer Utility to make a "Material Suit" which can derive UV Set from G9. Load a geo-shell to the material suit, hide the material suit, then load the Material Presets for G9's geoshell to G8's geoshell.

Edit: if G9's geoshell have a tailor-made UV Set, you can export G9 to OBJ (Base Resolution!) with that UV Set selected in Surfaces pane, then Load UV Set... to the material suit.
