Polish Summer Jeep?

Purchased this and I like it. Just trying to figure out how to make it so the seat or steering wheel is adjustable, so the character can sit in the seat driving without being so far away from the upper back part of the seat.

The simplest method would probably be a weight-mapped dForm, select all the seat polygons with the Geometry Editor, use the Node Weightmap Brush tool to fill with 100% (right-click>Weight Editing). invert the selection (right-click>Geometry Selection), and fill with 0%.

According to the product description, there is a morph for the steering wheel, while more logycally it should have been rigged.

There is nothing about the seat.

So your only option for that is the rig or nake a morph. Might be duable with a dFormer, if the seat is one connected geometry without connection to the rest, which also would make it doable to rig without to much issues.

    1. Select the steering wheel, dial the pose property: Steering Wheel Rotate (ss1)
    2. For adjusting the seat, since the seats and the jeep body are welded in terms of geometry, rigging / dFormer / Mesh Grabber won't work well as expected.  A simple way can be:
       a) With Geometry Editor, hide all Surfaces exept: Jeep_ Seat. Ctrl ++ to select the left front seatl. Create a Selection Set for it > LeftSeat. Then Invert Selection, create another Selection Set > Body. (ss2)
       b) Duplicate the Jeep ! Select the Selection Set > Body, Delete Selected Polygons. Then rename the duplicated node as LeftSeat. Move it forward by changing its X Translate value. (ss3)

  • The fact that the end user should have to make such time consuming modifications says a lot about a PA. Something like creating a rigged car seat during the design process should be second nature by now.

Are PAs under pressure to quickly provide products for release? It seems there are a lot of corners being cut by certain PAs recently.

No, it shouldn't. If you want a fully rigged automobile, there are websites where you can license them for hundreds of dollars. On a car, you could create a list of hundreds of items that could be rigged. Determining which one are necessary would not be agreed upon by every designer or buyer.

Of course it should. Given the varying size and height of characters that can be created, it's pretty damned obvious that a fixed seat position isn't suitable.

The figures can be placed through the seats. And I explained that could and should are subjective. You think seat postion is important. Other people would care about the wheels turning. Other people would canre about the gear shift shifting. Other people would want still other things rigged. When does the PA stop adding rigging? Wherever they want. You can always not buy it.

If I am blunt, I've felt this way about Polish for a long time. It might look good on the surface, but then you take a pistol or something, and find it has no moving parts - so, for example, the slide will not move, meaning that it cannot be used for a large number of scenes you might want to do with it.

What I think is reasonable to expect out of any asset where that asset is the primary focus of a product is that all large moving parts associated with the regular function of that item are posable. For example, a car asset is immediately less useful if you cannot open the boot/trunk, because if I establish that as a character's main car, then even if I don't need that to open the first time I'm using it, I may be causing myself a pain in the bum if it won't open when I need it to later.

I don't expect every last switch and toggle to work, and while it is nice if you can open the front and look at the engine, I'll accept that modelling a full engine bay *is* a large increase in effort with a lot of really detailed shapes and not really a standard part of operation of a vehicle.

And I do accept that not every vendor wants to model all the internal parts of a gun...

... but when a vendor does put in that effort, it does open up new scenes, and it does make me much more likely to go back to them in future, because I can trust that I have more things I can do with their work. (These, for example, are from Pinkslip).

And, in this respect, I would say that actually being able to adjust a car so that it will actually fit other sizes of driver has a really big impact on actually making it usable as users might reasonably expect.

Polish make(s) great looking, well-textured (if only Xivon could graduate from 8-bit textures to Polish-quality) sets and props that are suitable for background usage or set design. Any kitbashing efforts reveal that they are ill-suited for other usages. But you can make it work. crosswind's solution is what I would do, and I've had to do it before with TurboSquid cars.

Polish's conversions of Dekogon Studios' sets are excellent (their skill is discernible from the two sets they didn't convert), and the original artist's modeling & rigging means that Polish's usual annoying idiosyncrasies are missing.

Thanks Crosswind, I'll have to try that. Haven't ever tried that typse of editing, since I'm still pretty new to DAZ still.

I'd like to Thank everyone else for their responses and help with this.

This seems to be too simple an answer so I'm assuming it's not an option, but if the seat/seats are not modeled as part of the entire vehicle, you could select them and move them separately. If it was modeled and saved as a single mesh, then nothing short of editing the mesh will fix that easily. I'd have made items that need to move as separate parts and then grouped them even if I wasn’t going to rig them... at least there is some chance of the customer being able to adjust it manually, as opposed to it being one static unit.

    Polish has decent UV mapping

I cannot say the same for Xivon

I do buy both though but they are certainly no Stonemasons

I keep reading this thread title Polish Summer Jeep and thinking Wax on Wax off cheeky

Crosswind says the seat and body mesh are welded together.
