Adam on his Job.
The photo that Adam has in his wallet, his foster parents Jill and Kevin on his graduation day.
When Adam turned 12, he was taken away from his parents and best friend and was placed in a foster home far from the small town he grew up in. Jill and Kevin have not been able to have children of their own, so they welcomed Adam with open arms and treated him as their own son.
However, Adam did not meet them with the same warmth, believing that all relationships involve pain and loss after his grandfather died, he built a wall around himself.
After he turned 18 and graduated, he left, without so much as a word to them, hoping they would give up on him.
Despite it being 18 years later, Jill calls his voicemail and tells him that they are always there if he needs help, which makes him feel unworthy of their love and he is ashamed to return and look them in the eyes.
Adam's got his problems. Nice job of making a younger version of him. Why was he taken from his parents?
Thanks David, I'm glad you liked it.
That was a render that's a couple of years old, as I used Genesis 8 for Adam back then.
I've used Genesis 3, 8 and now 9 for the characters.
The reason Adam was taken from his parents was because his father abused both him and his mother and Adams limp on his right leg is a result of his father's violence.
When Adam's father became violent, his mother always took him to his grandfather for protection and Adam was more or less raised by his grandfather. He was the only safe place he had. So after his grandfather died, he felt abandoned and never wanted to feel that way again.
Adam's first meeting with Joi's boyfriend Chris.
Note: Chris is 183 cm tall.
"Erian," Kenny called. "Can you come here?"
Adam put down the tool and walked over to Kenny, who was standing with a man dressed in a blazer and well-polished shoes. The man was of average height, well-built with dark blond hair.
"This is Adam," Kenny said. "One of our better mechanics."
The man's gaze slowly wandered from his shoes to his shoulders, up to his face. Adam felt uncomfortable under the suspicious blue eyes.
The man held out his hand.
"Chris Kent."
The name made Adam pause in his thoughts.
Could this be the same Chris who had called Joi?
He tore himself from the thought and shook his hand, it was hard and perhaps deliberate?
"Adam," he said.
Their gazes met, and despite his height, Adam felt much smaller in front of this man. There was something about him, a nasty feeling he hadn't felt since he was a kid standing in front of his father.
"His car is having problems, can you take a look at it?" Kenny asked.
Adam nodded.
"What kind of car is that?" he asked.
Chris nodded toward the open garage door.
"It's outside," he replied.
Adam glanced at Kenny, who was waving his hand.
"Go check, if it takes longer than ten minutes, he'll have to drop the car off," he grunted.
Adam nodded and they went out together.
Outside was a new Mercedes, its pearly white paint glistening in the sun.
Adam's chest tightened.
It was the car that had picked up Joi that night. He didn't have to guess anymore, this was her boyfriend.
The thought made his heart twist inside his ribs.
"What's the problem?" he asked, but in as neutral a voice as he could.
Chris put his hands in his pants pockets.
“It stutters when accelerating and sometimes it loses power completely.”
Bullshit.
But Adam nodded.
“Start the car,” he said.
Chris opened the door and started the car, it sounded beautiful.
Adam opened the hood and leaned forward, his eyes gliding over the engine.
“Rev the engine.” he shouted.
The engine accelerated and everything moved exactly as it should and no strange noises. There was nothing wrong with the engine at all. He slammed the hood shut with a definite thud.
Chris turned off the car and got out.
“I can’t find anything wrong,” he said and walked over to Chris. “Everything looks as it should.”
Chris frowned and Adam thought his acting was very good.
“Huh,” he said slowly. “Then I must have been imagining it.”
He held out a hand to Adam.
“Thanks, and sorry for taking up your time,” he said, smiling.
Adam took it, and once again the grip was firm, but that wasn’t what made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. It was the way Chris didn’t let go, and instead leaned closer.
“Be careful,” he whispered, low. “And stay away from Joi.”
Chris’s eyes were cold, like a snake lying ready to strike.
“She’s mine,” he whispered.
Chris let go of his hand, as if nothing had happened. He walked around the car, opened the door, and got in. With a rumble, the car rolled out onto the street and disappeared.
Adam stood there for a moment, his jaw clenched. Anger slowly crept up under his skin, hot, chaotic.
Jealousy?
He took a deep breath and went back into the workshop.
“Well?” Kenny called out when he saw him. “Did you fix the car?”
“No,” Adam replied. “Found nothing wrong.”
Uh ooooh..!
Indeed!
Note: Old render using older models.
"Come on, boys," Joi said, linking arms with both Adam and Chris. "The market is waiting."
Heat churned behind Adam’s ribs as he felt Chris’s piercing gaze—like lightning bolts shot his way.
"This is going to be fun," Joi laughed, dragging them along.
"Sure, darling," Chris said with a tight-lipped smile. "We’re going to have fun, right Adam?"
Adam forced a string of unpleasant words back down his throat and smiled.
"Yes, of course, shortie."
Chris’s face hardened like clay in the sun; the furrow in his brow suggested a nerve had been struck.
Joi gave a short laugh and looked up at Adam.
"Do you two have nicknames for each other already?"
"Of course, darling," Chris said. "Right, Flagpole?"
Adam felt Chris’s venomous glare; he was treading on dangerous ground.
I’ll ruin your life if you go near her.
Chris’s threat echoed in Adam’s ears, yet he couldn’t stop.
The flames of jealousy licked at his ribs, making him bolder—or perhaps just more foolish.
This woman is toxic. Run Adam! Run till she's completely out of your sight! Great image.
Sorry, David, that you felt I made Joi come across as toxic here.
The fact is, she doesn't pick up on the fact that Adam is interested in her; she thinks he sees her as a friend.
And Adam is afraid to get close to Joi because he fears getting burned by the searing iron of abandonment. So, even when she makes a move, he takes a step back.
And this is meant to take place early on in their friendship.
I don't post things in chronological order, and I’ve stopped writing the story; I lack life experience when it comes to relationships—and, well, life in general.
