edited December 2015 in Freebies

It's that time of year, again.  You know the time.  Credit cards are hiding in fear, hordes of mindless creatures are roaming the streets and the radio is spewing the same old songs.

Time to sit back, dust off that freebie collection, assess you're options and have a blast rendering.

This month's theme is: It's Steampunk at the North Pole...so, break out the the goggles and give the holidays a little twist.

Standard rules apply....read them here: Official Freebie Challange Rules

And, no discussion of a contest would be complete without a list of prizes, right?

First Place: $15 store credit from DAZ3D

Second Place: $12 store credit from DAZ3D

Third Place: $8 store credit from DAZ3D

Oops...forgot to add it the other day, but there are also 2 $5 gift cards for Honorable Mentions.

So that is a total of 5 prize positions.

There will be a special holiday themed steampunk inspired hat, made by me for all entrants (not available until around the 15th).

And, of course any other prize donations will be gladly accepted.

PS: There is a tradition of mini-contests during this month.  More than likely there will be at least one of those, so keep monitoring this thread.

The contest ends December 31.

Entries thread is here.

    YAY STEAMPUNK! heart

How does one make fluffy snow in Daz?! surprise

    And how those mini-contests work?

Ahh I need to fix my good computer wifi! I'm using an old one that does not support DS atm crying (and I'm too jelly of my pc to just give it to other people to fix it for one week!)

Mini-contests are explained in depth when they happen...

As to 'fluffy' snow...easy in 3Delight using displacement, harder in Iray, but doable.

All the links, except Yamoto's A3 Maid set check out...but I think the link is messed up, because I just was there two nights ago and it was available through the Archive.

    There's definitely enough without it.

    You are good.  Entry accepted.

5 days in to the month and we already have an entry?!  Wow, Nitehawk, you are just crankin' em out!  laugh

Nice job!  Great little details like the little rovers next to the Nativity scene!  Hmmm, now I envision the "little Drummer Boy" being made of tin!  Thanks for the links to all those cool props.  I haven't seen a lot of these before!

mjc1016, count me in for $5 gift cards for the HMs this month!  (Gotta finish off the year strong!) wink

This is going to be a challenging theme for me this month!  I have never done a "steampunk" render before, and I know practically nothing about it, so this should be very interesting.  LOL.

I've done some Googling and it seems that no one seems to be able to pin it down either, so I am very interested to see how everyone interprets this month's theme too!

I wish I could! Unfortunately, I got hit with a case of the shingles about 2 weeks ago (on Black Friday, no less) and it's gotten into my right eye and the right side of my face. With all the medication I'm on a couple of beers would be disastrous. More disaster I don't need right at the moment...

While I'm thinking about it, when we repost our images in the Judging Thread do we have repost all of our links or just the image itself? I would think that since all the links are checked out in thread all we should need to do is post just the image...but then, I'm not runnin' the show...thank goodness. Tried it once and I'll never do it again. I just couldn't get organized that month...

Can you post the links as well please, as at Some stge we are going to do a sticky thread which links to the entry threads, so the lists of freebies don't get lost.

  • Not a problem. I just wasn't exactly sure just what exactly was needed in the Judging Thread.

BTW I totally empathise with you and the attack of shingles. I was so certain I was safe, because I had it once when a lot younger, but turned out I was one of the minority that could get it twice.

Mine missed the eye luckily, but came right down from just above my ear to half way down my right arm.  It's an awful thing.

My youngest Grandaughter cheered me up though. She phoned me to say that Daddy had told her I had "chicken spots" and I had to be good an remember not to scratch the spots.  She had not long got over chickenpox, and Neil told her that Shingles was grown up chickenpox.

As to 'fluffy' snow...easy in 3Delight using displacement, harder in Iray, but doable.

    Thank you for explaining :)

Here is a youtube tutorial as to how to put snow in your scene in daz studio with the shader mixer:

Not an entry, as 1) I entered this in last years new user dec contest (first place :) ) and 2) there's not a lot of freebies in there... BUT as inspiration for y'all (and because hey, the title of the contest literaly describes my picture :) and I don't really show off my work.)

    Louie's Steampunk Xmas

Xmas at da Nort' Pole? Wadda I wanna go t' da Nort' Pole for? I'm already in da Nort'! If I goes any farther nort' I'll be in Yonkers! Besides, I gots everyt'ing I needs for a Merry Xmas right here! Seriously, tho'...I loves dis time a year. Really! Alla da lights and decorations, alla da great Xmas foods dat people are bringin' by alla da time. Hey! Let's not forget alla dat special Xmas beer dat comes out dis time a' year. But I tells you what, it gits 'spencive runnin' alla dem Xmas lights all night long. Electrical don't come cheap dese days. It don't grows on trees...not even Xmas trees! Dat's when I hits onna idea. I wuz down at da scrap yard de udda day and I sees dat somebody t'rew out a perfectly good sauna furnace and a pretty good heat exchanger, jus' layin' dere in da junk. So, I hauls it home figurin' I could uses it somehow or other. Dat's when I gits a'nudder idea. Down to da train yards dere's coal layin' 'round everywhere, just for da takin'. I hauls a bunch'a dat home and sits t' woirk convertin' alla dis junk inta sumthin' really cool. I hadda make a few modifications to da ole apartment...which didn't sits too well wit da landloard or da building super, but, eh...dey'll gits over it. Anyways, a few hours later I'd rigged up my own steam converter! An' wotts da foist t'ing I does? I hooked up da old Xmas tree and dere ya goes! Da woild's foist steam powered Xmas tree, lights an' all! So now I git's my Xmas lights on da cheap wit' a cozy li'l fireplace t' boot! Now I kin just sits back an enjoy a few of dem special, once in a year Xmas beers! An' dat's da best t'ing...I kin sits right here an' not have t' woiry 'bout no Xmas Beer Zombies comin' after my stash. I guess it's just too cold for 'em! Funny, I figured dat dey'd like da cold, seein' how dey's all rottin' away and stuff...

    Slight modification he says?
