Yeah, you pinned it, Clint Eastwood. But the music was the best, along with the humor (or humour). But also because I was teased with the song because my name in Spanish is Maria and it led to Mariah... kids will go crazy to tease you. I am just glad I loved the song.

Non-Complaint Kinda: This morning an old crown broke off and exposed the sharp edges of a molar and while I whined about the nerves that got exposed a month or so ago, the sharp ends sent me actively looking for a dentist. And I found one from my insurance website that is close to me and was able to get me in. My only issue was this 'new-fangled' phone app I had to deal with to sign in and do e-check in on. Until I found their email waiting for me and a link to the computer version where I could see what I was reading and type on a keyboard. My visit was amazing. All these advances in dental tech since I last saw my dentist in 2014. I now have a day's schedule of procedures next Friday to do a lot of work, leaving the stuff for the dental surgeon in 2026. I expect I will be a basketcase afterwards. And I am glad I paid for the great insurance policy I did. And no plaque build-up! Shocker that. And now I have a new place with friendly people to visit with when I face the dreaded needle in the mouth. I will call it a plus on the happy scale.

What a coincidence. Tuesday I drove 240 miles total to have dental work done with 3D computers and 3D cameras making the measurements for a permanent crown, but for the wait time while the information was sent to the lab he made me a temporary crown. I left the building that day and had to immediately turn around to get it glued back into place because it immediately popped off. The 2nd time, it stayed on longer but the next morning, back home 120 miles from the dental clinic, it popped off again. So I called and told them and they scheduled my to have a new one made and glued on Friday, today, so I had to get up at 4:55 AM and drive 240 miles round trip for them too do that but they did and used a stronger glue. They can't use too strong a glue though because they have to remember it at the end of January to put the permanent on in place. So far, after about 8 hours the glue is holding it in place.

These new dental crowns I'm getting are made of that fake diamond sensation: zirconium! They look good and are tougher than porcelian & those other older crown materials. I had a gold crown at one time but gold is very soft & maleable and I completely broke the tooth in pieces by biting on Ferrara Pan Lemon Heads too hard, the (root canaled & gold crowned) molar came right out after than.

Well my existing teeth are 73+ years old, the fillings are anywhere from 60+ on to 11 years old, and I think the crowns are 20 - 30 years old. But the recurrent killer of my teeth through my life has been simple popcorn. I love it, my teeth hate the kernals. Sigh. And now there is ready made bagged popcorn in the stores. At least I don't have a long drive, maybe a mile? Up a hill, turn right, then down and turn left before the light, across a double yellow line. Otherwise I have to drive up two blocks and turn right, drive to the main road, turn right and turn right two streets down. And fight traffic. With about 20 years left to go with this body, this batch of dentistry should last.

I got a Subaru.  It was affordable, but I car get into it.  Apparently the doors don't open.  I also can't open the hood or trunk.

Apparently I can't get insurance on it as I can't see if it has a VIN

@memcneil70 - So glad you could get good & compassionate (and in-network!!) care arranged!!

@nonesuch00 - hope that glue continues to hold. What a hassle! Hope the finished product works well for you, though.

Have you peered through the lower window on the driver's side, just under the bottom of the window? This on American cars would be the left side.

I googled Subaru's locations and this is what the AI provided. Highlights are the AI's.

Subaru stamps the VIN on metal plates/labels in several key spots, most commonly visible through the windshield (driver's side), on the driver's side door jamb (B-pillar), and sometimes on the passenger side door jamb or under the carpet (slide seat back). You can also find it on the firewall or strut tower in the engine bay on some models, and of course on your registration/insurance documents.

Where can I get one of those giant keyboards like the one next to the Subaru?

  • Complaint:  Remember my landline phone being on the fritz?  Remember me saying that the fix-it guy couldn't come until Jan 2, 2026?  Remember me saying that the phone company (Kinetic) sent me a notification on my cell phone giving me the opportunity to advance my fix-it appointment to one of three earlier days?  Well, I answered that text with a reply indicating my preference of Dec 19th (YESTERDAY) but got no confirmation.indecision  Then a day or so later, I got another text from the phone company saying that the 19th was taken and gave me a list of two other days before the end of the year.  OK, I selected the earlier one and sent my reply.  Again, no confirmation.frown  Well, I got curious so I went directly to my phone company's website, logged in and checked the status of my trouble ticket, they still have me scheduled for Jan 2, 2026.angry

I've done my due diligence and verified that the problem is NOT my phone (I've used two different landline phones), and it's NOT my internal household landline connections, I've come straight off their fibre modem and still cannot get a dialtone.  All I get is "beep...beep...beep..."  I get my Internet, my streaming TV, my home wireless LAN, and my phone via the fibre modem.  Everything works, even incoming phone calls, but I cannot get a dial tone to dial out.crying  When I was 10 I had a tin can & string phone system that worked more reliably.cheeky

LOL here I was thinking it was taken at a weird angle and that was a building and the black squares were windows, like at a dealership or something.

This is what happens when I only look at the thumbnail on a small screen, apparently.

  • In the UK there is a universal service obligation for phones. This requirement means that the phone provider is required to make their best efforts to provide a phone service AT ALL TIMES. With internet phones they walk away from this legal obligation by saying 'Providing power to your router is someone else's problem, so we won't make any serious efforts to comply with the law. AND you must sign a legal obligation waiver [which is actually illegal as no rights conferred by law can be signed away] or you get no phones at all.' Given how much extra power an internet phone consumes compared to an analogue phone, it is absolutely the wrong way to go. The poor service is just an example of how much worse the phones are than a century ago. Where I live, a mobile is not an option, as the reception is hopeless and disappears indoors completely when it rains. Regards, Richard.

Progress:  Not much, but progress nevertheless.  I picked a time of day when I have a bit of energy, I prepared a temporary place to set my old printer/fax when/if I were able to get it from the table behind my lab bench.  Yay, printer disconnected (power & two phone lines), space provided on the floor for my feet to get close enough to the table, printer manhandled carefully, by inches, from the table, and moved three feet to the right and down two foot onto the provided temporary support (old computers).  Whew, progress!yes

More progress:  So, now that the printer was moved, I exposed 5 years of accumulated cobwebs from last time I gained access to the back of the printer table.  Slurp, vacuumed 'em up.smiley

Even more progress:  With the printer off the table, and the cobwebs slurped up, I now had loose cables fallen down behind the printer table that needed to be wrangled.  Printer table is actually a low, antique, wooden, two drawer chest in which I keep printer supplies and my camera equipment, so it's heavy and difficult to wrangle.  Meaning that it was difficult to get the fallen cables.  A hook-on-a-stick helped (all old people have one), but of course in my infinite wisdom when I wired those cables 10+ years ago I cable tied them neatly in place with several other cables(LAN, power & KVM switch cables).  Arghhhh...sad  I didn't actually have to remove the phone cables, but they were for the FAX feature of the old printer and I haven't needed to send or receive a FAX for 10 years.  And besides, the phone cables that were there were all that I had at the time and they were two 50 foot lengths of phone cables intended to span a total of about 20 feet.frown  The old phone cable routing went from the wall to my UPS spike protection socket, then up to one of my computers that still had a phone modem, then to the FAX machine, then from the FAX machine back to my phone.  Yeah, yeah, convoluted, blush but the phones worked until a week or so ago.

Stumped Again:  Now I've decided I don't need the UPS's phoneline lightning spike protection feature anymore(it's a fibre modem, not copper), nor do I need FAX anymore, so all those wires could go.  But as I said, they were tie-wrapped, the type that has to be cut with snipers.  So, by crawling under the lab table a couple times, and also wrangling the printer table/chest forward 3 inches(it only has 5 inches of possible movement), I was able to get my arm behind the chest to snip the tie wraps after I hooked them with my hook-on-a-stick.  More annoyances popped up but eventually I got all the old phone wires removed, wrapped and put away in my "Phone Parts" box, my landline phone is now connected directly to the fibre modem, the old printer is sitting in its temporary parking place, and the new printer is still unopened in its box in the middle of my living room, laughing at me and saying "OK, now what are you going to do with the old printer?"cheeky  (*Sigh*)

Complaint:  Arghhh...  I should have quit while I was ahead.  I was neatening up my still unfinished mess, and I accidentally knocked a shelf thingie off my lab desk area.  Down went my pencil cup(mug) & everything else on that platform and it went down between the tables of my lab bench area.  Pens, pencils, erasers, phone stylii, yellow markers, Sharpies, small screwdrivers, along with my "in-box" mail & papers, a speaker, paperweights and Post-It pads jumbled in a tight inaccessable space.  Oh, fudge.angrycrying

Non-complaint:  Hook-on-a-stick, and magnet-on-a-stick, and grabbie-on-a-stick all got a workout.  AOK now.yes  Enough damage done for the day.  Time for supper & a doobie.indecision

Yes! My teeth had fillings but were fine otherwise but I had a hankering for raw carrots, celery, and cabbage again after long abstinence and I started voraciously eating it and before long my filling had been torn to pieces! 4 teeth at once! And I split the bicuspid in two on the pit of a nectarine.

That would have been more exciting for me than what the class taught.  The class mainly went over how to use a web browser and a document editor and similar stuff.

RIght now I am watiing for my walmart order.  I don't think it is out for delivery yet.  correction. it is now on the way.  I hope the HDMI cable will be better than the currentl one that is too short.

Yeah, I know that feeling.  My mother kept me properly dentistried when I was young and I retained the habit through my whole life.  But now that the light at the end of the tunnel IS a train, and dentists are so expensive now, I measure my dental repairs against potential return on investment.  Being realistic, and considering my misbehaving body parts, I'm not counting my remaining years in groups anymore, I'd be happy to reach 80 in 3 years.  I remember when my stepmother was down for the count for the last time in Florida.  I went down to visit her, literally on her death bed, and while there she got a phone call from her dentist reminding her of an appointment.  She almost cheerfully told him to cancel it, that it wasn't going to be productive.  Then she thanked them for their care over the years, hung up and said to me "I've always wanted to do that!"laugh

I actually like my dentist and his wife. The wife is the one who calls to remind us of dental appointments. I don't think I would hang up on her. But if somebody was threatening to kill me at the time, I might let the phone activate voicemail while I try to figure something out. Or better yet, tell the guy with the gun to my head, "I really have to take this call".

I adored my last dentist in Santa Barbara. Found his office by accidentally walking into it, thinking it was the previous one. I had great care for the next few decades. After moving here to Denver, I would ask folks for recommendations and never could get one! I have no idea why not.

I had a similar amount of luck... I was about 2ish when my parents moved into the neighborhood they're still in, and there was a dental office about a mile off, at the other end of the development before it gave way to corn fields. They started going there probably for the proximity, though I'm guessing they'd asked around first. Got lucky the dentist was super cool, and a few years ago when he retired, his daughter took over the practice and she's equally cool. He did come out of retirement for a bit while she was on maternity leave, which I thought was sweet. The receptionist who's there has been there the whole time.

And there's that small-town feel... my brother was in Japan teaching kids on a little island off Toyko when that tsunami hit in 2011, and they called my parents first thing when they heard because they were worried about him.

More progress:  Wheee... the new printer (EPSON WF-7840), bought nearly a year ago on a deep sale) is out of the box.  Wow, it's heavy!surprise  But thankfully, it was packaged with removal from the top in mind, and came inside a lifting bag with suitable handle holes.  Now to read the documentations, and still decide what to do with the old printer(EPSON WF-7520).  It's still in a difficult position, behind furniture, so that either it has to be lifted over top of the furniture, or move the furniture, neither is easily possible by me, alone, anymore.frown  And the new printer has to go back to the printer table the same way.  So, now I have TWO printers and a big box sitting uselessly in my living room. (*Sigh*)indecision  Merry Christmas LG.laugh

Complaint:  Arghhh... I just received an email from the phone company (Kinetic) saying that they will show up at my door TODAY between 3:00 and 5:00.  Unlike their website which still shows my appointment for Jan2, 2026.  And of course, here was me thinking that I had plenty of time to resolve my printer issue.  But now I have my livingroom floor hidden by an excess number of living and dead printers and a big box.  Harumph...,  I hope the technician can walk through narrow spaces.  Last time I saw one of their technicians, doors presented a narrowness problem for him.frown  Yet I had to admit that he climbed ladders and worked atop telephone poles installing my fibre connection well enough.yes
