My fancy desktop computer up and died on me.  Seems like it is new but it is more than 6 years old so while not a great lifespan, not a rip off either.  Fortunately, I have been good about backing up my own stuff to an external drive.  Even so, I will need to be reinstalling a lot of programs, including Carrara.

My sympathies. My best machine is still going strong, but I dread the (inevitable?) situation you describe.  I've also got everything backed up - twice.  But the installation of all my software on a new machine is like getting wisdom teeth pulled.  Without novocaine. angry

I am considering a preemptive new machine - Win11, fast AMD CPU, RTX4090 GPU ($1600!)  All I need is a lottery win ... wink

the main thing I like about LAMH is it keeps the pelt UV mapping converted to a mesh

Strandbased hair and Carrara hair with Philemo's plugin do not, they become UV mapped to the length of the hair

Zbrush only can do hair length UV mapping too, not pelts

albeit the pelts are mixed packed tiles not actually matching the original donor mesh

I do have a trick up my skeeve for the Carrara hair though

because it maintains Vertex order regardless of length, I export a zero length one as well and use Ultimate Unwrap3D to convert the UV mapping to packed tiles then the repaint to project the texture from the original growth object to it

then in DAZ studio load it in surfaces as an alternative UV

Thanks for the input. I got it. Will see how it goes. I have Catalyzer, but it seems to only work in safe mode. Is it possible to download older versions of DS? I probably have a really old version somewhere (too old), but AM said around 4.12? Things went sideways. Did the numbering change on DS?

there must be some components you can salvage

I was going to try to just replace the bare minimum but the local computer seller offered a few hundred for my old PC as a trade in.  I am going to do that.

Yeah, it was fun for a while to have the render beast, which is now barely standard.  Not going for the greatest or fanciest this time around.  With the trade-in value and how the equipment has changed, I've gotten better than I had, and paid about half the price that I paid 6 years ago.   This was not in my budget for this year.

Feeling for not in the budget. I will not be able to update my computer to Windows 11 by the October deadline, looking more like February for what I want .....

mine won't be for a year or two as no point updating this one as it breaks too many things I use like Octane Render (version I own outright)

    Eartquake at Kilkivan - https://earthquakes.ga.gov.au/

I was in bed and the bed started shaking (after going to bed at 3.15 am - sleeping in), pedestal fan next to the bed started rocking sideways, and a large rumbling noise. No damage to the house that I could see.

Glad to hear you're OK.  We don't get earthquakes here in Houston, the ground is too mushy.  We get hurricanes.  The current one in the Atlantic seems to be missing the US altogether.  smiley

    Great characters.

I was in an earthquake in Washington, DC some years back.  Was on the phone with someone about 3-4 blocks away when it happened.  My building was close to the subway so I assumed there was something wrong down there until the person on the other end of the phone said something.  Had to evacuate and they shut down the city while the structural engineers went around giving the thumbs up.  Other than a big crack in our stairwell, no noticeable problem where I was.  Fortunately, I lived within walking distance because they wouldn't let people on the subways until the engineers double checked there as well.

A friend of mine was in San Farncisco for meetings that got out early.  So the group rented a car and drove over the Golden Gate.  They got back and reported there was something wrong with the car's suspension, it was weaving back and forth.  It was the "World Series Earthquake" in 1989, which interrupted the third game of the series between the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants. It caused significant damage, including the collapse of the Cypress structure of the Nimitz Freeway and the Oakland Bay Bridge, and resulted in 63 deaths and thousands of injuries.

Yup, lots of faults in California.  We don't get earthquakes here on the Texas Gulf (of Mexico!) coast, the land is too mushy, and I like to say the hurricanes give us a couple of days warning.  Tornadoes, OTOH ... I was in the men's room on the 20 something floor of an office building in Houston when everybody on the floor came in (it was a male dominated engineering floor).  I thought a meeting got out, but then I felt the building move. A platoon of tornadoes had passed, and the building flexed.  I got back to my window cubicle and there was no window, just mini-blinds waving in the breeze.  A manager was putting up yellow warning tape and said "Do not go in there!"  I said, "Do not worry."

my brother lost the tops of 2 fingers a couple years ago at work, he's a carpenter joiner, been one since 17 is 53 now, just took one misjudgment with the circular saw

My father-in-law did the same thing, although for him it was just a hobby.  An ex-military friend of mine who is big on guns accidentally shot his tool box, of course with an "unloaded" gun. Good thing he and his wife don't have kids.

Well don't want to hijack, but I need info. I posted in DS forum, but I am sure someone can help me here. Ty.

Btw. This model is a very cute little freebie also. https://www.daz3d.com/steam-truck-red-bizon I find this forum annoying to type on a tablet. Code controls keep disappearing no matter what mode.
