Thanks @mding & @richardandtracy for your comments and links!

  • Even though I got into Daz around the time G8 was the new thing (Aiko 8 Pro Bundle was just released the first time I opened this site), I've always had a soft spot for Genesis 2. I like how the character designs are kinda more "game like" style and hence I'd say overall more sexy. And after learning more I even started to appreciate their higher polycount base mesh. Problem is, G3 and specially G8 have much, much more support for adult content creation, which is what I do and also why I appreciate the overall style from G2. But yeah, I never got to use them... despite having a bunch of stuff for it I got at really cheap sales.

Everybody, don't forget to grab the three g2 freebies if you haven't already:

    https://www.daz3d.com/alethya-outfit-for-genesis-2-female-s

https://www.daz3d.com/manga-anime-battlesuit-for-genesis-2-female-s and if you are interested, the texture add-on is in the outlet store: https://www.daz3d.com/tomoe-for-manga-anime-battlesuit for 0,99 (premier)

    https://www.daz3d.com/aubree-hair-for-genesis-2-female-s

@xyer0: You are very welcome and many thanks for the very impressive renders you have contributed!

@mazinkaiserzero: I perceive g2 as very suitable for comic or a rather painterly style and could very well imagine, that your genre needs as much photorealism as possible. Some artists have managed quite realistic g2 renders, but I guess that requires a whole lot of extra work. This thread is just for fun for friends of the g2 cosmos without comparing to other generations. All generations are geat, and it would be so cool, if we had a thread for every generation. Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment!

Actually, photorealism is not a requirement. You can also go stylized and it's actually due to the comic sort of style that I felt G2 would've been great for it. Also, sorry if it seemed like I'm comparing the figures in a sort of a "this one is better than this one" way, it wasn't the intention, If anything my point simply was that I wish G2 also had gotten those things. Since I can't really use it for my usual content maybe I'll just make some more, let's say, normal stuff with it to share here so I can have an excuse to use it xD

I didn't get the impression that you valued like g8 more than g2. I meant it the other way: This thread is for those, who love g2 and its' little cosmos for whatever reason - a fan thread so to speak, but it is not claiming that g2 is in any way special or better than other generations. That is why I meant it would be great if there would be such a thread for every generation. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

To read, that you maybe would be willing to show us some g2 renders, that is really great news, thank you very much @mazinkaiserzero!

Heya all, just wanted to showcase a beautiful G2 jeans real quick, from this outfit: https://www.daz3d.com/casual-denim-2. I used it on a G9 (Wynne) totally out of the box, just autofitting. Didn't do anything with the textures either. Of course it's not dForce, but I think it's just gorgeous! Will list all assets in the gallery entry tomorrow, too tired tonight.

@tsroemi: Many thanks for that nice render! I also totally love that outfit and remember others in the forum recommending it. DarkStarBurning and MindVision G.D.S. did two "Casual Denim" outfits with texture add-ons:

    https://www.daz3d.com/casual-denim with http://Casual Denim Xtra

and the one you already listed https://www.daz3d.com/casual-denim-2 with https://www.daz3d.com/casual-denim-2-xtra

Thanks for that reminder, these are great products!

Oh cool, I'll go check these out as well!

Edit: A question, has anyone tried the old 3Delight Actual Eyes sets with Iray (https://www.daz3d.com/actual-eyes-4 for instance)? I'd love to know whether they are useable!

Can't say that I have. I actually came up with a DAZ Uber based Iray material set for G2 Lyonesse Maribel, saved it as a material preset and so far have used <CTRL><DoubleClick> to apply it to all my subsequent G2 characters and not applied the textures when asked. I've done normal maps to Naida and her tail using the freebie utility 'Materialize' based on the bump map, or a hand over-painted version of the bump map.

The pre-Iray clothing will also need normal maps. It's a pain first time the stuff is used but OK after that.

    Regards

    Richard

Oh my, that sounds exhausting! Good hint about the Lyoness textures, thanks. I do have some Iray G2 textures by her as well, figure I'll just use these then.

  • richardandtracyrichardandtracy Posts: 7,080

It's really only the shader that needs changing for Iray. The Lyonesse textures are all good. However, just applying the Uber shader makes things go all shiny and wet looking. So I do spend a bit of time with the first off of the generation, going through every surface, making it look right (often copying skin settings from a G8 character I like, etc), then with surfaces using the same map (hand, forearm etc), I copy the shader from the surface I've worked on. Then copy those to other parts ensuring the correct textures are in the right place. Takes time. Finally, once done, I save the character material as a preset which I apply to the next to save time. I've followed this procedure for Iray with V3, V4 & now G2. It's laborious but works and the character doesn't look super-matt in Iray either, which seems to happen if you leave the 3DL shaders alone.

    Regards,

    Richard

Back in the day I got EXTENSIVE use out of G1 and G2. I skipped G3 entirely and was very slow to adopt G8.

I used G2 & G3 heavily and because G8 hung around much longer than normal, I really embraced it and have a huge assortment of characters. morphs and accessories.

@tsroemi: Maybe I am doing sth. wrong, but the presets didn't work in iray, even when I applied a uber shader on the concerned surfaces or used a 3dl converter. In the end I loaded the textures from that product and used the mapless eye preset from https://www.daz3d.com/beautiful-skin-iray-genesis-2-female-s, but normally I tend to use g8 textures.

The textures are in your daz folder: DAZ\Runtime\Textures\MindVision-GDS\ActualEyes4 and you will get better results, if you are willing to play a bit longer than me with the surface settings. BTW this is Olympia 6.

@richardandtracy: Great scene - this really showcases the quality of the outfit and Alessa is a really cool character - many thanks!

@mding, thanks for letting me know! I would probably not get them to work either then, I'm not very texture-savvy ;-) Will just use the iray textures from Lyoness I guess, like I said.

Thanks @mding. Your Olympia 6 image really doesn't look as if it's from a character 3 generations old. Could be G9. Very impressed. Regards, Richard.

Genisis 2 is still one of my all time favorite generations. Some of my favorites: Olympia 6, Victoria 6, Callie 6, Michael 6, The Girl 6, and a few of Raiya's G2F characters, to name a few.

Though there are quite a few more from the Genesis 2 line that I really like. Once you morph the elbow area to be more realistc the figures are fantastic! I had made a custom elbow bend morph for G2 a few years back, sadly it got lost to a failed drive. One of these days I will have to make a new one. A fixed or improved elbow bend really elivates G2F characters.

    PubertyPerils

Continuing my Maid Vs. Monster motif, Stephanie 6--finally getting to display her cuteness as a crypto-succubus--stands ready to dispatch Exile Alien (aliens are demons) bargaining for the firstborn while Witch Hunter Robin blithely looks on. Just another day on public transportation!

Stephanie 6 wears B25 Steam Punk Aviator V4 (still the bomb!) and Bootleggers G2F, for which I futilely lobbied BadKittehCo to issue a G8 version. Although her compromises were also fabulous, I felt they lacked the brazen sassiness of these swashbucklers. For the distraught G2F mother, I tried different Genesis 2, Genesis 3, and Genesis 8 skins (thanks Cayman Studios), and this is what I finally begrudgingly settled on. Now I realize I should've used Genesis 9, 'cause Daz finally got dark skin right in this generation. Oh well, I'll declare victory.

ETA: Stephanie 6 also sports Aery Soul's defunct Xenon wings. I remember the first time I saw the store promos for Xenon: What?!

LOL At the dude just sitting there on his phone, completely oblivious.

Was he added in post? He looks more photo-realistic than the other characters, IMO.

@richardandtracy: Thank you, Richard! I used the original skin texture with Preset 2 of https://www.daz3d.com/iray-smart-converter-and-advanced-skin-managers-for-genesis-2, Olympia 6 was on HD morphs. No further changes, as this was about the eyes.

@3Diva: Wow, to be able to work directly on the meshes, that is very impressive! Maybe you could point us to a render in your gallery? In any case many thanks for visiting the thread!

Hey, 3Diva, you saint, you! He and the guy in the back are Lo-Poly pre-posed people (static 3D scans) I bought at CGTrader or TurboSquid. I use them to fill out crowds in depth-of-field. Thanks for mentioning my joke that unfortunately is funny because it's so true to life.

@richardandtracy, so you are an UltraScenery maven as well I see.

My image above was looking at the hunter, this one is the same scene, but of the hunt. Took a bit of time to get the lighting close to what I wanted. And due to the faint mist, the render time was around 2.5 hours with an RTX3060. It may be a bit bright, hard to tell as my PC is in a conservatory and I have to have the screen at maximum brightness just to be able to see anything. Anyway, it finished well after I went to bed.

    Regards,

    Richard.
